Champions League income needed for Champions League budget

1182

I suspect we have not seen the best of Daryl Murphy, who has proven to be a solid Championship and fleeting Premier League player in England but has been unable to retain a place in the SPL, but his hamstring injury, suffered after the long flight to Pennsylvania, will be a blow on two levels for Celtic.  They are denied a squad player for the crucial Champions League play-off round against Helsingborgs and are likely to unable to loan him out, easing more pressure from payroll.

Daryl was singled out for credit (here) for the way he changed the shape of Celtic in our opening league game of the season against Aberdeen.  He would have been useful to Neil Lennon this coming week.

News that Helsingborgs have lost their top striker is welcome but is not quite ‘like signing a new player’ for Celtic.  Let’s hope they haven’t lost their Kenny Miller only to find their Jordan Rhodes.

There can seldom have been more financially important games to the club than the Helsingborgs tie.  Celtic accounts are usually released mid-August (16th last year) but I don’t anticipate any rush to publish this year.  Last season’s accounts could well see the largest loss in our history as the club chased their first league win in four years (insert standard lecture on financial responsibility program, avoid urge to run legacy Sir David Murray malware).

I expect the figures to show Celtic are operating with a Champions League budget (and that’s without evading tax).  Football finance lessons are clear, if you have a Champions League budget you need Champions League income.  Time for this team to step up to the challenge.  Get along and pack the place out on the 29th.

No regrets this time.

Bed early tonight if you are off to Dingwall in the morning. I hope we see a few of the young lads.

  1. Paul McStay had that mysterious quality all great players have. They seem to float in a bubble. Always time on the ball due to a deadly first touch.

Always time to pass unerringly as they have a picture of the game in their head.

No one gets to them in a tackle unlwss late because of theiir awareness of space.

Always always plenty of unruffled time on the ball.

Ghentlemen , I have been in Wales for the past week and could not get Internet access but when I did , I saw that “dettoandthebacklash ” had a spare ticket for away Helsingborg game. If you still have it I would really appreciate it if I could have it. I have lurked on here for a few years and posted a few times , but don’t know everyone’s names or how to contact them. I am not a Hun and have 2 ST and have supported the Celtic for 50 years ( well 45 of them ). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The SFA asked him back in February to chair an enquiry into Huns FC. Paul McConville earlier this week wrote an article for The Scottish Football Monitor which you probably know replaced RTC asking what happened to The Nimmo Report. Worth a read b.t.w.

  9. EDB

I think you’re correct I know Nimmo -Smith did something….wasn’t the tribunal that imposed the transfer ban tho

  10. PFAyr,

Apologies. I think Nimmo Smith did the original report that branded Craig Whyte as not a fit and proper person and outlined that there was a case to answer for Rangers (ia) bringing the game into disrepute. That then led the SFA to set up the Tribunal.

  11. I once had a “bit of a spat” with Graeme Spiers after he insulted Frank Zappa in an uninformed and narrow-viewed fashion in the Scotland on Sunday. As a result Zappa’s UK record company telephoned me to congratulate me and then furnished me with an array of rarities.

  12. The SPL have announced the

    members of the independent

    commission that will deliver a

    judgement on dual contracts at

Rangers. With Ally McCoist going public to get the names of an SFA commission made

    known, despite Rangers officials

knowing the names of the individuals, the SPL have led the way in terms of accountability.

While Charles Green refuses to tell Sevco fans the names of his investors and backers the SPL have announced that their panel will be chaired by Lord Nimmo Smith alongside Mr Charles Flint

QC and Mr Nicholas Stewart QC.

The commission will inquire into alleged EBT payments and arrangements made by Rangers in relation to players during the period from 2000 until 2011.

There is no precedent for such an inquiry but in normal circumstances any club fielding a player that hasn’t been properly registered would have the result overturned to a 3-0 defeat. Lord Nimmo Smith chaired the SFA panel that hit Rangers with a 12 month

transfer embargo that the Ibrox club took to the Court of Session to overturn. The proper punishment would have seen the club either expelled or

suspended from the SFA with Lord Nimmo Smith deciding against taking such drastic action. Having been over-ruled previously it’s unlikely that Nimmo Smith will come up

with any sanction other than laid down by the SPL rules.

regarding John Collins transfer to Monaco, I think it was the other way round. He signed for Monaco as a free agent post-Bosman move to an “EU” club. Hard cheese Celtic said all in the Scottish media.

But, Fergus the Great argued afterwards that since the Principality of Monaco is not in the EU, the Bosman ruling did not apply to their football club. He asked for £3 million as I recall but failed to convince UEFA or the courts.

I hear that while he was in Monaco to argue with the AS folks, Fergus met a young billionaire called Craig Whyte and between them they hatched a cunning plan…

  18. jeez_I_thought_blinker_was_pants on

John Collins, what is the best way to put it, “Looked after himself” in his last 6 months with Celtic. Anyway, although he was good, his free kicks/penalties inflated his goal tally vs McStay.

    Paco,

If you’re mother is a Scottish born RC then she is definitely in a tiny minuscule proportion of them that support us. I am afraid that my 50 years in this country have taught me that Scottish Catholics are the most corrupt, devious and bitter specimens to inhabit this earth. I would not trust a single one of them to be impartial when it comes to us and I therefore agree 100% with the assumption of willie w.

    Yup.

Watched the two of them in tandem many a day as the MSM insisted they couldn’t play together and the Maestro wasn’t international class…

The same MSM who told us assuredly that Henrik was also barely international class and would struggle badly outside the SPL. Those sages…

It was the rest of the players in those days around the dynamic duo who were the problem. Couldn’t catch up with the steps ahead McStay and Collins operated in during games.

If only McStay and Collins had the likes of Larsson and Moravcik around them. A dream.
