Coming of Age Day at Celtic Park

478

Celtic Park was packed with an expectant crowd 11 years ago when Celtic took a two goal lead into the second leg of a Champions League play-off round.  Many of us felt it was to be a sort of Coming of Age.  After our long hard slog throughout the 90s we were champions and ruthlessly swept aside Ajax in the first leg.

After the full time whistle arms were aloft in celebration but only after an incredibly tense 90 minutes which saw the visitors win the game and fail to convert some decent chances.

Four years after our last entry into the Champions League this new Celtic side have a Coming of Age opportunity tonight.  Last season they showed their mettle to overcome a daunting deficit early in the season to win as comfortable champions, with or without penalties applied to opponents for employing more footballers than they could afford.

While the players may reach a new stage in their development tonight is as much about the supporters who have been part of the struggle in recent seasons.  This is your reward for all those hard times when your club paid their bills but had victory snatched away from them by others who were playing to different rules.

Bring your singing voice tonight.

  1. Good luck to the Bhoys tonight.

Wish I was going, had to give my ticket to my old mum as I moved to Alberta on Monday for work reasons. On that note does anyone know if the games are still shown in the Carriage House Inn, in Calgary? Hoping to go there, if I can skive off work for a few hours. Thanks in advance.

Anybody know if we are able to exit the joint sponsorship deal with tennents.

For me this is possible the most important issue for Celtic. That descision when made will send out a clear message either way if Celtic have the determination to move forward.

Posted earlier about his performance on SSB last night, 2 Celtic fans ( Mark & Dougie ) ripped him a couple of new ones. He tried to be clever by picking one of them up on something that they clearly never said and also went down the football club is different from the business route.

I find it amazing that such an idiot can keep finding fairly high profile employment…..must be the soup!

  4. For me, our most important player tonight is Scott Brown. The others look to him in moments of uncertainty. He is a captain in more than words and we will need that quality tonight.

As regards nerves. It is only natural that we, the supporters, should feel nervous before such an important game. Personally, as KO time approaches, I find my confidence growing. I notice the same happening on here. Relax bhoys but BE the twelfth man throughout the game.

  7. The sooner Celtic can find a way to exit the shirt sponsorship deal with Tennents the better!

    Are you lurking, Ian Livingston?!

What about an initial 5 year deal with BT? To be re-negotiated after 3 years?

Will you be at the game tonight?

It really bothers me that he is very clearly someone’s useful idiot . From his attempts at explaining away Cadette’s disallowed goal at Ibrox to his gig at the SFA he absolutely stinks .. Cupboard full of skeletons

Hope to rejoin a celebratory CQN tonight when I get home from the game. I love reading back the posts that take place during the games – when Celtic score a goal it looks as if we’ve gone Seven Up from all the posts.

I’m sure we won’t be as careless as last week and that Victor will protect the defence. The Swedes won’t be able to attack as carefree as they did last week because they will have to assign two players to James Forrest and they will also worry about Sammi’s runs down the left. I also expect Gary Hooper to pose a much greater threat than he did last week.

35,000 Yanks are in Dublin to watch Notre Dame play at the Aviva stadium this Saturday.

When those Americans finally take a keen interest in soccer, our club must to prepared to tap into, and exploit what will be a huge commercial market for our own unique brand.

Qualification tonight will be a step in the right direction. We need to build from here, and compete every year with the other European giants.

    The possibilities are endless.

Time to leave them all behind.

The Peats and the Ogilvies of this world shall soon be an irrelevance to our great club.

    They are nothing.

  14. CELTIC are aiming to secure their qualification for the group phase of the Champions League in the second leg of their tie against Helsingborgs tonight, after a 2-0 win in Sweden last week.

The draw for the Champions League group stage takes place tomorrow (Thursday) at 5pm (BST), and Neil Lennon’s side are almost certain to be in Pot 4 if they overcome their opponents tonight.

The only way they would move up to Pot 3 is if both Borussia Moenchengladbach and Cluj win their ties tonight.

They both have a lower co-efficient than Celtic, so the Glasgow club would rise two places into Pot 3.

Lille and Fenerbahce both have a higher co-efficient than Celtic and would go into Pot 3 if they win their ties.

The draw will produce eight groups of four teams, consisting of one from each pot.

Ten winners from the play-off ties – including Celtic – join 22 automatic entrants.

Each team will play home and away matches against their three group opponents between September and December with the top two sides qualifying for the knockout stage.

We loaned that to The The Rangers Club but they gave it back…..they couldn`t fill it.

For the last game (ever?) against Them, we needed two buses . They had none. There are a lot of Sevco sympathisers in Arbroath but they don`t go to the games. The Arbroath Emerald, on the other hand, celebrated its 30th anniversary earlier this year and we take around 40 to every Home game. A guy called Sticky (heaven knows why) does all the work and Mitch, the driver, is very much a Tim. Smashing bus.

  19. tennents deal;

I remember the feeling among the support when the initial joint sponsorship deal with the soon to be liquidated club was muted. The support were almost 100% against the idea.

Peter Lawell stated at the open meeting that the club had taken the Celtic story around the world and the tennents joint deal was the best they could get. This statement left me feeling that perhaps Celtic were not the global brand we like to think we are.

I also felt that our good name and reputation brought some kudos to the soon to be liquidated club, while their general behaviour reflected negatively on us.

Going our own way re sponsorship must be the way ahead and never again join forces with the bigots.

  20. Only one home game’s scoreline in Celtic’s entire European history would be enough to knock us out tonight.
