Commons needed for busy February

963

Neil Lennon’s comments that he will need to sell at Bolton Wanderers before making a bid for Kris Commons, or anyone else, are welcome.  Celtic have four important games in the four weeks after this transfer window closes: home and away to Inter Milan, Aberdeen in the league, and a League Cup semi-final against newco Rangers.  Commons will be vital for some, if not all of these games.

Inter will play on the front foot and Aberdeen have the players to take the game to us, as they did in the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park last season, but I expect newco to defend their 18 yard line in numbers, a bit like Ross County did last week, a scenario which will require someone with Commons’ craft.

Neil Warnock’s sacking at Crystal Palace was good news, as he wanted Commons, had money to spend and could offer the allure of top-flight football.  Neil Lennon would be able to offer Commons familiarity, but with Bolton spending a total of £300k in the summer, their chances of being able to afford a bid for Commons that would raise Celtic’s interest are limited.

  1. Ronny Deila isn’t expecting any quick transfer deals during the January window.

After tomorrow’s match at Kilmarnock Celtic head to Gran Canaria for a training break with games against PSV Eindhoven and Sparta Prague thrown in.

It’s highly unlikely that any new faces will be on board for that trip as the clock ticks down on a crucial period of the season.

During the summer Stefan Scepovic was the only player that Celtic paid a transfer fee for with Deila expecting business to be concentrated in at the end of the month.

“It is very hard to say if we are closer to signing anyone,” he admitted. “You can have a feeling one day it is going to go and then something new comes in and you are back on your heels again.

“It is so hard to do something very early in the window. We will try to do it but I think we will have to work on the 31st. I don’t think we will have anyone in early. If we do it will be a positive surprise.”

Thanks for reply.. only thing I can see that sounds like you suggest is visability timeout and its set at never.

Does give shorter options which I had earlier but I changed it to never timeout and didnt make difference.

Wouldn’t expect anything else from the incompetents who manage our transfer dealings. Amateurs.

  4. Neganon…. I genuinely don’t want to appear having a go at you …. but I simply disagree.

Could the financial climate be contributing to the dwindling attendances as well?

I know that the product isn’t what it was 15 years ago….

    But world football has changed…

Money is being thrown around in a sickening way.

Money through TV revenues that WE have no access to….

Not because of the demise of them…..

Because we live in a country of 5m that is regarded as 2nd rate by the rest of its nation.

    That’s REALITY.

  5. canny see what the fuss is all about in killie refusing us a training session on their pitch,it belongs to them.

  6. Cowiebhoy I was waiting on how celtic would manage this window and I particular manage our expectations…….and lo they tell us how hard it is. Soon it will be that January isn’t the time to buy……blah blah blah….

One of the biggest problems our club has is its signing strategy, and headed up by John Park

For me that should be a priority are to be fixed, his choices are costing us dearly, mind you he may eventually find another Wanyama, how many chances to get there though ?

  9. I notice that Doncaster omitted to explain why, if they are the same club, did they not represent Scotland in Europe the following season and why have they been unseeded in EVERY domestic cup draw for the past 3 seasons. Surely, that is a contradiction in terms?

They (now) state that they are the same club yet treat them, in every way, like a new club!

  10. Interesting article about 10 young talents from Eastern Europe. I wonder if anyone was/is on Celtic radar. I personally doubt it.

Turkeybhoy what we are trying to do is make sure that all of the support understand what is going on. Our only hope is to get so,e sort of regime change at celtic. Otherwise the celtic you think you know will cease to exist, replaced by a poor imitation willingly being cheated at every turn.

Ahh,so thats the goal.”Regime change”and “What we are trying to do”.

Sounds like some coup in a distant banana republic. So what you really want is YOUR board put in power,YOUR thoughts to be the ones followed,YOUR outlook for this brave new world to be grasped by all who follow Celtic,or “The Celtic I think I know, will cease to exist”.

Sorry, the Celtic I know,do exist, will always exist, have existed through far worse than anything your imagination thinks exists now.I existed through much worse times. Our fathers existed through even worse times.

This board, who I disagree with on so many issues, have negotiated my club through the worst of financial hardships. In a climate that clubs,so much more wealthier than mines, have found impossible to compete in without being burdened by insurmountable debt. For this reason alone, they have my gratitude.

You and your clique of “Wolfie Smith revolutionaries”would take our club down because of some purported slight to your Celticness,by not issuing some meaningless statement regarding the demise of the Huns. For not taking up a gauntlet that to be honest,is just a salve for your sense of outrage. The liquidated club, that no one seems to care about any longer is still calling the shots to you and your like.

Boards come and go,as do fans. The only constant is Celtic, who I have loved since I realised what unconditional love was all about.Nothing will deter my joy at following them.

No surprise that we are again taking it to deadline day to sign players

I thought this was the transfer window where we were supposed to carefully plan for the CL qualifiers

Not yet another window where we have another last minute rummage through the usual bargain bins

Decisions made in a rush on deadline day don’t generally work out well. If it does turn out to be another deadline day scramble then taken in conjunction with the summer transfer window it’s hardly giving the manager the requisite support to build his own team.

  15. Pauloantony its fine to disagree. There are indeed a lot of reasons for dwindling attendances. Mr lawwell believes it’s all down to the Huns not being around, I agree the economic situation contributes but so does the paucity of the team and the lack of atmosphere (killed by the police aided and abetted by the board).

  16. Glorious balance sheet all of our focus in transfer windows is on selling. That’s why we leave buying to the last minute.

  20. Dear Turkeybhoy. Your love of celtic is of course admirable but guess what it is shared by everyone on this site. No big bad bogeymen or Huns. Just celtic fans eager for us to progress and tackle our problems.

As for regime change yes I personally think it’s needed to halt our decline. But even more Importantly is the current boards engagement in the corruption. It’s not about Rangers you see. It’s about the cheating we have experienced through all these years. It’s about sectarianism and our place at the back of the bus. It’s about those who run our club ensuring that we continue to experience that sectarianism and that cheating because they think it helps us make money. It’s about realising that celtic have become a vehicle for that and not what celtic was created for and that the game is rigged.

So for what lawwell and co have done to celtic and more importantly to the celtic support and the celtic ethos then yes. Regime change please.

  21. ExSlaemuirBhoy on

Somebody somewhere sometime soon is going to have to dig deep into their pockets to prevent sevco going into administration this season. Due to the lie’s published in the press “same club keech” a 25 point hit is about to rear end them. Can’t see them coming up. Lie’s have a habit of biting you in the erchie. Bend over bears.

    Winning captains/P67,

Is there any way in which you could establish an online poll via the blog for registered users to express how we feel about our club at present(similar to our official poll carried out by celtic only this time ask the real questions that need answered)?

I appreciate we are all entitled to our opinion however for every 10 of us who seek justice and for celtic to progress we usually have one “red top emerald CSC” that likes to cause a tad of animosity and the main point seems to get lost within it.

  24. There are last minute deals and last minute deals.

    Hail Hail

  26. Cowiebhoy I agree. But the reason why we have all that deadwood is down to our signing strategy in the first place?

  27. Ronnie doesn’t expect anything to happen til the very end of the window.

Hardly what fans want to here.

2 windows ronnie has had and anybody that thinks the board have backed him are living in cloud cookoo.

dont understand it.. couple of league defeats and a cup exist will see people looking for new manager… board will then have to pay ronnie off and start again.

dont know why they wont just give him 5m now for 1 or 2 players and promise more in the summer if he wins a double or treble.

We should have seen few players leave the club on day 1 of the window.
