Commons needed for busy February

963

Neil Lennon’s comments that he will need to sell at Bolton Wanderers before making a bid for Kris Commons, or anyone else, are welcome.  Celtic have four important games in the four weeks after this transfer window closes: home and away to Inter Milan, Aberdeen in the league, and a League Cup semi-final against newco Rangers.  Commons will be vital for some, if not all of these games.

Inter will play on the front foot and Aberdeen have the players to take the game to us, as they did in the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park last season, but I expect newco to defend their 18 yard line in numbers, a bit like Ross County did last week, a scenario which will require someone with Commons’ craft.

Neil Warnock’s sacking at Crystal Palace was good news, as he wanted Commons, had money to spend and could offer the allure of top-flight football.  Neil Lennon would be able to offer Commons familiarity, but with Bolton spending a total of £300k in the summer, their chances of being able to afford a bid for Commons that would raise Celtic’s interest are limited.

Yes we balance the books…. Motherwell,Livingston,Hearts, Gretna and Rangers are surely the way to go….

We have poor players at the last international break we had 28 players on duty…. We even had some playing at the last world cup.

Our under 20’s are cutting their teeth against European opposition on a regular basis…. but few go on to play for us on a regular basis….I consider two reasons for this the removal of the reserve league (we were about to go for ten in a row) and negativity from the stands….We have an opportunity to blood some youngsters but some can’t stand the thought of losing a game apparently.

The board are failing us….The same board that had to protect Neil, who’s employees were put at risk… I’d rather that change is achieved through consensus and that takes others to stand up too.

We are in the league we find ourselves…I get the impression that every effort is being made to change that….

I’ve attended Celtic games at home since the sixties. …I’ve seen good and bad times but if you want some perspective my sister packed her belongings into the family car as their home was threatened by the bush fires in Australia….

    pauloantony,

I’ve raised this point before on here but as an occasional poster it’s not always that easy to get a response but I’ll try again.

Most business circles tend to be very insular in that each company and it’s competitors have a good idea what goes on within each other’s day to day running. Football and Scottish football in particular would IMO be extremely insular and no more so than the two previous big clubs who would be very well aware of each other’s players contracts. Both clubs, and others, would have either been or would have started to become, very well aware of the impending disaster that was unfolding at Ibrox. In fact, Brian Quinn I believe, actually took one of our players off of an EBT contract due to the potential liabilities attached to such an instrument. Therefore our custodians would have almost certainly been aware of these contracts at the old RFC and yet said nothing while we surrendered league titles, cups and Champions League participation. Remember that Arsenal took steps to correct their EBT mistakes by paying HMRC several million pounds in a settlement.

Why did no one on our board speak up during that period?

  9. Paddy gallagher I do think it’s time for the celtic support to get angry and demand answers. C optic are simply ignoring us (as those of you who sent emails to celtic are discovering) and hoping that the more ostrich like celtic supporters will drown out any dissent.

Further celtics treatment of its support and in particular the GB has been done to remove any vocal group who could question what is going on.

Even on these pages we have been sold on an ever decreasing spiral of guff. From sustainable spend ( remember that debate), to every penny reinvested in the team( it’s now the club not the team. Mind being told the aiden McGeady money was being used to pay the electricity bill), now are are stockpiling cash and not being told why.

Meanwhile our CEO gets an extra bonus. On what grounds did he deserve that? That’s surely not good corporate governance?

Meanwhile the media tells us that celtic where involved in the 5 way agreement and celtic don’t refute it. It’s inconceivable that Peter didn’t know about it. That being the case celtic are working to reinstate the old firm and the cheating and the sectarianism. That’s further shown by doncasters deliberate nonsense on th club v company debate. Doncaster is a servant of the clubs and has done this at the say so of the clubs. Celtic are by far the most significant club. So lawwell signed up to this.

The “people” have just been told by Doncaster, a senior figure in Scottish football that they are still the same repulsive club they always were.

We can’t rely on the other clubs to question this, IMO time for Celtic to ask questions. As my Raith Rovers supporting pals are always asking me “Celtic lost more than anyone with the huns cheating, why don’t Celtic do something about it”?

Now I actually think, player recruitment is a major disaster area for us, we have for too long now been wasting millions on 2 nd rate players. Going back to same agents (Duda Duhan in Israel) etc, our success rate in signings is very very poor, hence we have apoor team, but still spend millions

Time we dealt with that first, then we may attract fans back

I see the support dwindle as a result, also as a result of maltreatment from the club, from stewards, the police etc. it’s open season on celtic fans and our board are at the head,of the queue. Why? Dos they don’t want anyone to question their so called strategy and the definitely don’t want the truth about their involvement inthe.corruption to emerge…..

    Pauloanthony

Yes I have played football before and accept that there are no guarantees and the underdog occasionally has its day.

Hence my post looked at our European qualifying record since 2005. Elimination v teams who had less money and were lower ranked than us in 2005 (art media) 2010 x 2 ( Braga Utrecht ) 2011 (Sion) and 2014 x 2 ( Legia and Maribor).

That’s 6 defeats over 2 legs in qualifiers against teams with less money and lower ranked than us over the period 2005.

Only two years where we won through the qualifiers against teams with less money and lower ranked than us was 12/13 and 13/14.

I’d say 6 failures v 2 successes over a 10 year period can’t be blamed on one-off bad days, a bad year or bad luck.

It’s especially concerning given how much money these games are worth to us. From this year CL qualification monies would account for about 40 per cent of our income for the year. We should focus more on the practical steps we can take as a club to access that money – this does not necessarily involve spending money in itself but a good first step is reviewing the incoming player transfers over the last 3 years to address the mistakes made.

I’d much prefer out custodians took that approach other than you’re unambituous “the CL is out our reach approach.”

And by the way we won’t sign Radovic. He is 30 year old so has no resale value.
