Commons needed for busy February

963

Neil Lennon’s comments that he will need to sell at Bolton Wanderers before making a bid for Kris Commons, or anyone else, are welcome.  Celtic have four important games in the four weeks after this transfer window closes: home and away to Inter Milan, Aberdeen in the league, and a League Cup semi-final against newco Rangers.  Commons will be vital for some, if not all of these games.

Inter will play on the front foot and Aberdeen have the players to take the game to us, as they did in the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park last season, but I expect newco to defend their 18 yard line in numbers, a bit like Ross County did last week, a scenario which will require someone with Commons’ craft.

Neil Warnock’s sacking at Crystal Palace was good news, as he wanted Commons, had money to spend and could offer the allure of top-flight football.  Neil Lennon would be able to offer Commons familiarity, but with Bolton spending a total of £300k in the summer, their chances of being able to afford a bid for Commons that would raise Celtic’s interest are limited.

    The big surprise is that folk are surprised by this or, rather, taken a-back by this.

    What you have described in that post is – the way that it is here, always has been, always will be. The key to getting round this is, to be a move in front, be xtra-street-smart, be a cutie, get yer bushy-tail swinging or…my favorite, be a tricky-mickey.

    I used to here Lou Macari being called a trickey-mickey by huns who were wary of what he could be capable of – if – given the chance. Unfortunately, Lou Macari was viewed some insecure folk from within CP as being just too clever. Hmmm?

    Both MON and WGS contributed greatly to the demise of ‘the corrupt ones’ and that puts them at the top of my ‘league’ ….

    I am now convinced that BDO and HMRC have been instructed to ‘stand down’….and that is a sad reflection on our society….

  7. MON V WGS

    we all have our own take… True WGS achieved more titles while downsizing but I Personally found his style of play to be turgid and he was dismissive towards the fans. I never connected with him. That said, I’m pleased to see him thrive with Scotland.

    I was born in 1967 so in terms of meaningful memories – MON provided the best I have. I loved his ambition, his style of play, his connection with the fans and the belief he gave us. I also liked that he reeled against the clear negative bias towards Celtic, never fearing to air his views. He also challenged Lawwell.

    For me there is only one winner…

    MON and GS,

    Two great Celtic managers, as for the crowd at CP chanting MON during a charity game, and ignoring GS,well I would take that with a pinch of salt,

    Where are these great supporters of our club now?

    Are they waiting in the wings for our next big name manager?

    Are they now listening to SSB,

    are they still buying the red tops,

    Do they now boo everything that goes wrong with our current team at CP

    Or maybe they are waiting on yon dead team coming to CP.

    Who knows?

    Not too far off the mark there, Bhoy….

  12. MON was brilliant as was WGS. Both put Celtic on the European map. If I had to pick between them of course Martin brought back the pride , the thunder and Seville, he is the best manager we have had in my time. Fantastic time to watch Celtic. Wee Gordie and our own Lurgan man Neil are up there as great Celts. My only point was that WGS acheivements should not be muddied by any rubbish about having no competition. If that was true then his hoops would have failed miserably in Europe. Night all. Hail Hail.

  15. CultsBhoy:

    I’ve like every manager we’ve ever had. I know some of them were more competent than others but I’ve wanted each and every one of them to be successful and that holds true to today.

    Re Gordon Strachan, he did give the press pack a hard time in his days of being a Celtic manager and he did delight in putting them down when they tried so hard to put us down. For that I admire him. MO’N speaking out against the cheating at the UEFA sponsored press conference pre the Barcelona (?) game was clever.

    I also took to Gordon Strachan when he pulled the kids out from the crowd at Hampden and had them celebrate with the team on the pitch. I also like how he’s stood up for our club since. Okay he’s made a few mistakes with his mouth from time to time but then who hasn’t.

    I want our board to rediscover our ethos and match the objective ambitions of the support. To do that they must back the manager with coin and be honest with the support. Silence is not honesty but I’m sure if the board sincerely engaged with the support then most of the angst would evaporate.

  16. Kitalba

    Regarding your question from yesterday. I have not got your phone number, nor email address. You can take mine off Paul or BT.

  17. Not searching deep, my two candidates to Celtic this transfer window would be Stilic and maybe Jaroslaw Fojut.

  18. Zbyszek:

    If you have Ol’Tims e-mail address he’ll forward you mine. Actually if you send him your phone number I’ll get it from him and give you a call. It would have to be done today or tomorrow though because after that I’m on my way back to the UK. and I might not get the opportunity to call you for a while.

  19. Kitalba

    An important contextual consideration is the influence of Lawwell in the timeline of MON- WGS -NL- RD…

    As he has grown in influence and authority ( and wealth) the voice of the manager has become increasingly muted…

    Most regrettably from my perspective the team has become weaker.

  20. Lathcford

    Yes.

    Turnover is irrelevant, it happens all the time, do you remember united getting knocked out by Porto? Lesser teams always beat bigger teams, its part of football I’m afraid. Bigger turnover doesn’t guarantee anything I’m afraid. Performance does.

    We are doing better than Aberdeen, being 2nd with a game in hand means nothing, if we lose to Kilmarnock it means nothing. If we lose the league it does the simple answer is we wont.

    We’ve always cried out for competition outside of Rangers, we know have it. Its good for the game. Again budget and turnover are irrelevant, its good these teams can perform so well on a lesser budget, maybe we are being wasteful with ours?

    Dave king will do no such thing, he has Ashley to contend with first, he’s a real business man you know, not some squinty eyed monkey in a suit. Dave King was part of the previous club Rangers that went into liquidation, he didn’t save them then, what makes you think him being part of things now will change that?

    Ashley is loaded and has his plan.

    King is a charlatan and a fraud.

    I agree, at times it does appear as though the business monster has chewed up the simple pleasure of sport, but if there’s a buck to be made…. It really is a shame how the global game has been kidnapped by the bean counters and the greedy.

    I grew up in the 60’s and all I knew was the joy of the family and Celtic, and neither cost an arm, or a leg, or a worry. That was my benchmark for a Celtic team though I do appreciate others have different time-scales and perspective.

    Here’s a shameless report from Celticrollercoaster from last week –

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Hi fholks
    As it is the first day of a new year, I thought it would be good to give you an update on Wee Shay McGinley. Thanks to CQN and indeed the fund raising done by the family themselves, there is enough monies raised for the first year of treatment (about £6k). It is estimated that a further £12k will be required to give Wee Shay a further 2 years treatment and help him along the way. So a big thank you to all so far for helping this wee baby and his very young parents.
    The treatment Wee Shay is receiving is called ABR which is an alternative therapy not available on the NHS. Wee Shay undertook his first course of treatment in November 2014, with March 2015 and June 2015 to follow, as part of year 1 treatment . The difference this has made already has been incredible with Wee Shay been able to take food by the first time by mouth (soup) without the threat of choking. Indeed, this was to be his first Christmas dinner and he would sit up (assisted in his adapted chair) at the Christmas table with his family at this special time. A big moment for the family.
    This is a big change from last year, when he and his family spent most of the time in hospital, worrying over the life of the Wee mhan. Wee Shay is also managing to sleep through the night, without being sick, which was previously a daily occurrence. What a relief this is to his family.
    He has also made his first sounds ( to his daddy :-) ).
    All very simple things to us all as parents and grandparents, but some giant steps in 2014 for Wee Shay and his family. I hope 2015 is even better for them.
    How much of this improvement is down to the treatment and how much to the resolve of Wee Shay, we will never be able to tell, but what I can tell you, is that every penny we have donated through the various activities, has given this family hope and a chance of a better quality of life.
    This is what we do well on this blog!
    You can read about Shay here:
    https://www.facebook.com/pages/Help-Shay-Along-The-Way/814451225255695?fref=ts
    I had the privilege to meet up with Shay and his mum and dad just before Christmas, and would like to pass on their thanks and immense gratitude to all of you from them. A happy wee unit and one that would inspire you ( It did me!)
    So, thank you bhoys and ghirls for helping an incredible wee family and if you have not joined Last Man Standing 3 yet, don’t forget to drop a wee email to us.
  26. I’m watching the fa cup highlights. It highlights to me that Scottish football’s troubles are in large part due to uk media setup.
    Wall to wall coverage of a foreign football league network. National news, highlight shows, live games, national papers, national radio shows.
    What coverage there is of spfl is obnoxious in its bias towards one club in the leagues to all but that clubs supporters.
    Sky’s premiership hyperbole.
    Match of the day (bigger production budget for this one show than the entire bbc Scotland budget tv, radio and Web)
    Motd shown twice at peak viewing and recording times before spfl highlights.
    Motd 2 ensuring EPL games are shown on national tv 3 times before Monday.
    Almost pointless spfl highlights, after 11pm at night, with a mere three minutes or so dedicated to each game. There is more pundit waffle than football highlights.
    Football league show showcasing all English league games
    A small but telling aside. Clyde saw fit to give live coverage to second rangers v Dumbarton when there’s an Edinburgh Derby on, presumably justified for their West of Scotland locale, but give us every goal scored in England on ssb. Their beat the pundit I heard the other night when driving had more English questions than Scottish!
    Blyth Spartans had to win 7 ties to get to third round of fa cup. This shows the depth of their football but also highlights their genuine football pyramid. Blyth theoretically have a route to the premiership if results were to merit it.
    What to do?
    Hoist the white flag. I’m serious. We’ve just had a referendum confirm we are North Britain. Approach the fa and the UK government with a proposal to merge into the English pyramid making it a UK pyramid. The government will love it, at a stroke it will hole the independence ship below the water line.
    For us and the rest of the well run Scottish clubs we get a route to bigger riches and effective media coverage. Tear down the old boys network of sfa/spfl and Scottish football media.
    Tear it down and embrace North Britain
  27. Joe Filippis Haircut:
    Again, I’m sad to say I agree.
    BT:
    If you’re about, could you send me Ol’Tims number because I’m getting no joy from the numbers I have.
  28. sunny calmachie on
    I grew up in the seventies when Celtic were a force in Europe, we did go toe to toe with the best,
    Unfortunately now TV revenue calls the shots,
    Don’t get me wrong I am no big fan of our custodians, but they themselves are sometimes up against brick wall politics,
    they have recently asked for a fan zone at Celtic park, standing areas, and a few other things which would have benefited the supporters and the club, but have been told no by the powers that be,
    There are still a multitude of opportunities that they miss out on, and I could be here all day listing them,
    Like paying themselves a CL salary,
    So I would give them a 5 out of 10. .
