Commons needed for busy February

963

Neil Lennon’s comments that he will need to sell at Bolton Wanderers before making a bid for Kris Commons, or anyone else, are welcome.  Celtic have four important games in the four weeks after this transfer window closes: home and away to Inter Milan, Aberdeen in the league, and a League Cup semi-final against newco Rangers.  Commons will be vital for some, if not all of these games.

Inter will play on the front foot and Aberdeen have the players to take the game to us, as they did in the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park last season, but I expect newco to defend their 18 yard line in numbers, a bit like Ross County did last week, a scenario which will require someone with Commons’ craft.

Neil Warnock’s sacking at Crystal Palace was good news, as he wanted Commons, had money to spend and could offer the allure of top-flight football.  Neil Lennon would be able to offer Commons familiarity, but with Bolton spending a total of £300k in the summer, their chances of being able to afford a bid for Commons that would raise Celtic’s interest are limited.

KDC. I think the vested interests in Scottish football would bin your idea self preservation is the name of the game. H.H.

  2. I get the feeling some wouldn’t accept a team of players all from within 30 miles of Celtic Park these days. No matter how successful it was.

    Sad.

Sky give Scottish football a pittance and scottish subscribers take up more than 10%.

There’s the problem. Scottish subscribers help subsidise the English leagues.

Excellent post, highlighting the inequities and imbalance of the media particularly the BBC disgraceful disregard for their own ethics, our support don’t help, here on CQN we get regular updates on here ref Sky EPL games+ Shug Keevins SSB

Lionroar67. I have to agree with you SKY are selling a product we dont have to buy it and if we didnt maybe just maybe Sky would do something about there poor treatment of Scottish football. H.H.

  6. chrisvancoupon,

Subscribers to Sky also watch a lot of other football from outside the UK, and presumably Sky pays to show this. So do Sky customers in the UK subsidise La Liga and so on?

Sky has a UK customer base and sells subscriptions. More people in the UK want to watch the EPL than the SFPL so they pay a lot more money to secure the rights. That vast difference in club income then reinforces the gulf in quality – but how do we break that? My opinion is that we will never be able to. The only way to increase our broadcasting income substantiallyi s when a European league of some description comes along.

What was interesting for me was seeing the crowds at various football matches over the festive season Aberdeen v St. Johnstone Dundee Utd v Dundee and Hearts v Hibernian all had good crowds. It shows if there is no cheating and clubs are given a level playing field fans will turn up in numbers. However, those who run our game are once again only interested in one team getting back to the SPL they dont accept or choose to ignore that by pandering to the Rangers they will drive fans away fans in the main wont pay good hard earned money to watch a rigged game are you listening Mr.Doncaster ? H.H.

Their coverage of Scottish football is the reason I gave to Sky for dumping them a few years back.

  9. Morning all

The black dog is at my door so bear with me. 60 hours without alcohol after three weeks of drinking every day ( not always heavily I must add) takes its toll

And yet when it comes to Celtic I wonder whether I would be as disheartened as I currently am even if it were a different set of chemicals coursing through my bloodstream.

The Doncaster statement regarding the status of Rangers and the complete non-reaction not just from Celtic but every other club is disheartening. A lie – and there was was a specific untruth regarding the Lord Nimmo Smith report in Doncaster’s statement- is now a ‘fact’. There is a corner of the globe that is forever Airstrip One it would appear.

Celtic’s silence is especially disappointing but who amongst us is surprised? I have no doubt that many on here and amongst the wider support will say ‘ah but Peter Lawwell and the Board will be doing things behind closed doors’. Well, you know, if you think that I think you are wrong. During the spring and early summer of 2012 the club said virtually nothing as Rangers died and let Turnbull Hutton and others tell the truth and since then the lie has grown. The Celtic Board will say nothing to contradict the mainstream media when they talk about the return of ‘The Old Firm’. That is not a fact it is a prediction by the way.

We are run by people who now see themselves as Celtic and that disillusions me. 13 months ago just after I had returned from the chastening experience of seeing Celtic’s worst ever result in Europe I posted what it was I thought Celtic was and is. I still think what I wrote was true but those who run our club see things differently and I would concede that they – and specifically Dermot Desmond- have more say in matters than me or the rest of the support ( collectively).

And then there is the playing side of things. I was annoyed that Chris Sutton chose the Daily Record to air his opinions on our team’s failings but worse I agreed wit a lot that he said – I think we are in a mess.

Things have been made just a bit more complicated by the Ne’er Day postponement. Aside from the disappointment of the the match itself being postponed- surprisingly I must say as someone who lives a mile from Firhill- the postponement together with our voluntarily postponing next Saturday’s match opens up the possibility of serious fixture congestion later in the season if we progress in at least two of the three cup competitions we are still in. Our squad is large but is plainly short on quality in almost every area of the pitch and whilst I do not think that there are many players with either Dundee United or Aberdeen’s squad who would add much to our team ( MacKay-Steven and Armstrong are just about it) I am not sure that I think that we have many players in our squad who would add significantly to the quality of either of those teams. Our players might be a bit better than some of their players but the gap is not as big as we thought and I would say that if we lost Scott Brown or Stefan Johansen we would be in real trouble. I hope they stay fit as they are our best outfield players.

Our manager Ronny Deila has done nothing so far to alter my initial impression that he represents a huge gamble. I like the way he has tried to engage with the support and there were welcome signs of a new team spirit during that good run we had but on the the field there is little if any sign of positive change. The team is less entertaining than it was a year ago, [ which is an achievement of sorts]there is no clear sign that fitness is improving and there is a baffling lack of tactical flexibility which makes our attacking play increasingly predictable and easier to defend. I repeat from earlier postings that Deila so far has done nothing to convince me he would have done better than Jackie McNamara or Paul Hartley had either of them got the job. I would like to think that Ronny has clear ideas of who he wishes to bring into the squad – those who were brought in during the last window were, I would imagine, mainly players we would have been looking at had Neil Lennon still been in charge. Will Deila be given much to spend? History suggests not. If he is not then some of the criticism that will come his way should Celtic falter will be undeserved. But it will still come.

I am pessimistic about Celtic in a way that I have not been in about quarter of a century. There is no realistic, visible alternative to the current regime that runs Celtic and that current regime shows no real interest in engaging with the support or standing up for Celtic. The current manager has achieved nothing since he arrived to reassure me that he has the ability to take the playing side of things forward longer term and short term there are worrying signs that an unforeseen humiliation in the defence of the League title is in the offing.

As a soothsayer I am not great – I decided to add Norwich to my coupon yesterday which cost me several hundred pounds- but being realistic I think in terms of the league we will scrape home. Aberdeen and Dundee United are probably better than they were but they are not actually better than we are on current evidence. But long term? There may be , to be corny, trouble ahead.

Had one of Hugh Keevins pearls of wisdom been taken on board by the crew of wannabe smart-arses on here and elsewhere then, the huns wouldn’t have been able to ‘pull’ the wide move that they did by – going down the leagues to avoid paying the £140 million that they stole and, will now ‘never’ pay back.

Hugh Keevins recommended that – the huns be kept in the SPL with a points deduction until ‘all’ of the £140 million had been paid back. But, what happened? The Celtic cyber-savages wanted the huns oot the league so that we could grow ‘irretrievably’….never to be mentioned in the same breath again as the huns.

    What happened?

    We’re hauf-died….that’s what happened!

Ah mean, ye canny even give away complimentary tickets now for CP!

It’s so bad that, the ‘bored’ tried to pull a move by, offering free-tickets to the unemployed – dressed-up in the same smoke-screen as the cut of £100 off the price of SB’s that wurny selling and, guess what?…..all the cyber-savages bought it – hook, line & sinker!

And the very smae cyber-savages have the cheek, the contemptable audacity to call the huns mugs? Aye…look in the mirror.

Back to Hugh Keevins….if, HK had been listened to….then, think of all the years – decades of hunskelpings that could have been dished oot. Ah mean, thats what I live for – to love my hooped-hunskelping heroes and, so does HK. I think that…HK was planning ahead. Just think, in a couple of years, HK will probably retire and would have been savouring all those hunskelping DVD’s for later in life :)

Seriously….HK was right and, as it turned out…the huns have been away for 3 years and, ye have to ask – how far are Celtic in front of them now?

3 years away and, back into the ring with Celtic next year, having told the folk who are waiting on the £140 million that – “They Are The Peepul and ‘nobody’ will fluck wi them.”

Nobody……but, a Celtic FC run by rebellious Celtic fans. But, sadly….Celtic are followed by subservient-brainwashed-sheep and nobody will fear/respect them and, they wonder why their the establishments punchbags?LOL, LOL feckin LOL!

Sutton has been well over the top in his criticism of Celtic. He’s a soup taker and has went down in my estimation. He has a problem with Lawwell as he wanted him off the wage bill.

Deila inherited a team that was on the way down into this season there are guys who want away and who clearly don’t want to be fitter.

I agree that most of the signings have been from Lennon’s target list.

The approach taken in previous years by Celtic isn’t viable anymore. Throwing money at the team isn’t an option.

There are players there who need to do a lot more and yes, there is a lack of quality, especially in wide areas and backup central defenders but the regression started long before Deila got here.
