Commons needed for busy February

963

Neil Lennon’s comments that he will need to sell at Bolton Wanderers before making a bid for Kris Commons, or anyone else, are welcome.  Celtic have four important games in the four weeks after this transfer window closes: home and away to Inter Milan, Aberdeen in the league, and a League Cup semi-final against newco Rangers.  Commons will be vital for some, if not all of these games.

Inter will play on the front foot and Aberdeen have the players to take the game to us, as they did in the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park last season, but I expect newco to defend their 18 yard line in numbers, a bit like Ross County did last week, a scenario which will require someone with Commons’ craft.

Neil Warnock’s sacking at Crystal Palace was good news, as he wanted Commons, had money to spend and could offer the allure of top-flight football.  Neil Lennon would be able to offer Commons familiarity, but with Bolton spending a total of £300k in the summer, their chances of being able to afford a bid for Commons that would raise Celtic’s interest are limited.

  1. I for one is actually glad for the competition this season ….

    Hopefully it may attract a SUPPORT ….

    Add hearts & sevco/hibs next season and things should be very very interesting…

    I think we are waiting for them to arrive before investing, we should have enough with a couple of additions in Jan to secure this league .

    In Europe we have found our level…

    No matter how disappointing you find that statement it’s true.

    Operations have long changed since and prior to THIER demise.

    WE have cut our cloth accordingly….and correctly so.

    Get this Champions league is now a bonus… Not a gimmee.

    Scottish football’s poor poor poor euro standings has put our automatic qualification due to winning title to rest.

    It is now a gamble not worth taking as failure would be a complete disaster.

    We are a massive club restricted by our surroundings.. surroundings that we have NO influence over …. So get over it.

    Take a look at some of the team’s in the Europa league…..

    Take a look at some of the massive team’s who failed to reach Europe this year ….

    Lyon: 2nd in France at mo… 1 point ahead of free spending PSG 7 Points ahead of free spending Monaco 1 point behind leaders Marseille…..

    Knocked out by our previous opponents Astra.

    With TV or even a billionaire sugar daddy WE STILL AINT GUARANTEED CL .

    Happy New year…. Hopefully a sobering one …

    Get behind our manager team and club ….

    Enjoy the good times … Hopefully 4 in a row.

    And stop bloody moaning …biggins Andrews Slater ….

    Gudetti Gordon Brown ….

    We’ve had reason to moan ….

  5. Pauloanthony. I agree with you on one thing. We are stockpiling cash. Do I think it’s for the return of the Hun? No. That would be counter to our so called strategy of buying projects and selling for a profit.

    On your point on don’t even try to qualify for CL. This is exactly the problem at celtic. It is no longer about football and trying to put a team together at CP. It’s only about money. And somehow you and your ilk support that strategy. Why? Why not support RBS?

    If Celtic are indeed working behind the scenes to assist the establishment team to the top tier of Scottish football against the supporters wishes, we surely are a toothless support and deserve what we get. I can understand your point, I want to have a club to support in future.

    The route Celtic took in the past is no longer viable. There is no money to just throw away. The last manager had a good few bob to spend and it produces some turgid stuff to watch. Fine, he sold on a few players for good money but there are a lot more who Celtic will make a loss on.

    Celtic’s change in tact to appoint a raw manager is understandable but they must back him. They haven’t so far. Fine, he’s spent on scepovic but the majority of signings are obviously from Lennon’s target list.

  24. Pauloanthony yes there is indeed a faction of the celtic support who unblinkingly are loyal to whatever the celtic board dreams up. You are one of them. Your particular justification is bourne out of fear that we will overspend and be just like the Hun or Leeds (invoking some ghosts to frighten us). But I haven’t heard a single celtic supporter who is calling for us to do that. I do agree the media etc would let us die without question. So that makes it even more galling that it’s those who run our club who are in league with those who would kill us.

  25. I was at the AGM last month,Peter Lawwell told me we had £14 mil cash in the bank.He also told me we could be the biggest football club in the world.We are currently struggling in a piss poor league,with 6 players on loan.Am i missing something here?

  26. Turkeybhoy what we are trying to do is make sure that all of the support understand what is going on. Our only hope is to get so,e sort of regime change at celtic. Otherwise the celtic you think you know will cease to exist, replaced by a poor imitation willingly being cheated at every turn.

  33. the glorious balance sheet on

    Pauloanthony-

    How on earth can we blame the Scottish league for us being horsed over 2 legs in qualifiers over the last 10 years by teams such as –

    Artmedia Bratislava;

    Braga;

    Utrecht;

    Sion;

    Legia Warsaw;

    Maribor.

    These are all teams that had much less financial resources than us. You can rack up the occasional defeat in those circumstances but to fail more often than not (11/12 an 12/13 are the only years in since 05/06 where we have triumphed in European qualifiers on the park) suggests systemic problems that have remained despite the changes in managers in that time.

    Our failure against these teams was about a failure to get our own house in order, nothing to do with the standard of Scottish football.

    If CL qualification is deemed as an unlikely pipedream when we are up against teams such as Maribor with 10% of our budget, then the blame for that lies inside the club rather than with the rest of Scottish football.

    I can`t for the life of me blame the likes of Neil Doncaster or Kilmarnock FC for our failure to bring through established first team players from the youths that are better than the journeymen of Maribor. I can`t blame Stewart Regan or Dundee Utd for the millions wasted in wages and fees on Pukki, Balde, Tonev, Wakaso, Berget, Gershon, Lassad, Miku, Bitton, et al in recent years or the fact that so few players signed become established in the first team and stay there.

    Its fair enough that we can`t compete with teams from Italy, England, Spain, Germany, etc due to the financial imbalances. But for CL qualification we compete both domestically and at CL qualifier levels against teams with a fraction of our resources.

    Its the champions of Sweden, Norway, Slovenia, Poland we`re up against and they all have less resources at their disposal than we do and come from countries where exceptional talent is generally hovered out of the country at a very early age by the bigger European leagues.

    Stop blaming others for our own failings.
