Commons needed for busy February

963

Neil Lennon’s comments that he will need to sell at Bolton Wanderers before making a bid for Kris Commons, or anyone else, are welcome.  Celtic have four important games in the four weeks after this transfer window closes: home and away to Inter Milan, Aberdeen in the league, and a League Cup semi-final against newco Rangers.  Commons will be vital for some, if not all of these games.

Inter will play on the front foot and Aberdeen have the players to take the game to us, as they did in the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park last season, but I expect newco to defend their 18 yard line in numbers, a bit like Ross County did last week, a scenario which will require someone with Commons’ craft.

Neil Warnock’s sacking at Crystal Palace was good news, as he wanted Commons, had money to spend and could offer the allure of top-flight football.  Neil Lennon would be able to offer Commons familiarity, but with Bolton spending a total of £300k in the summer, their chances of being able to afford a bid for Commons that would raise Celtic’s interest are limited.

Why wasn’t Gordon Strachan “universally” accepted by the Celtic support?

I’m not implying anything mate. I’m stating explicitly that Gordon Strachan was not accepted by some people – including on this blog – even after he had delivered the silverware that he did.

BTW – my understanding was that his remit was to cut the wages. Not sure if that happened – others are better placed than me to comment.

  6. Peter Lawell been getting it tight on here.let’s face it he his only the messenger for Desmond.he Desmond is the real culprit .seen on here there were rumours of him trying to offload his sharI for one hope that somebody with deep pockets buys them off him.as for Dave King he shoudnt be involved with sevco.he is a convicted tax cheat .so he is not a fit and proper person.and thats what Celtic Football Club should be looking into.if they don’t well that tells me they are all cheats.

    timbhoy2,

Not only is he a convicted tax fraudster, he was on the board of the previous cheating entity. That alone should ensure that he can have no involvement in the new cheating entity but as most of us are aware, them rules only apply to the other 41 law-abiding entities.

I don’t necessarily agree with everything that Latchford writes but I will say on one point, many years ago, in somewhat different circumstances, we laughed loudly at a completely incompetent hun manager, they we not quite on their knees but they were a laughing stock pretty much as now. Next thing we knew, the grand charlatan arrived on the scene and together with our own in-house shenanigans, we were subjected to almost twenty years of misery and cheating on a scale not seen in my lifetime. Many of those involved, particularly at an administrative level, are still involved.

History has an awful habit of repeating itself, especially if we don’t learn the lessons first time around.

  10. Timbhoy2,

Dermot is not active in Celtic now. More than ever we need a string hand to guide the club.

Agree on King. There is no longer a debate on fiit and proper person. It’s a done deal.

Not a peep from Celtic on King. This will come back to bite Celtic big time and when it does the fans will ask why Lawwell did zilch. He is on the SFA Board and the situation at Sevco is definitely top of the agenda.

Celtic acquiescence to all that is going on is sad. We have had leaders throughout our history from Maley, Sir Robert Kelly, Fergus who stood up for truth and integrity. Today we have a dignified silence which is quite ironic in a way.

What was the story of the Kelty Hearts V Sevco Testimonial Match in July 2012 being postponed ?

If my memory is correct, Sevco didn’t have a licence to play this game, so the game was postponed.

    Anyone else remember this ?

The point is, if Sevco didn’t have a licence, then it blows the whole same club myth right out the water.

  16. Found this over on Celtic Minded ……..

Kelly Hearts have criticised the Scottish FA after the Fife juniors were forced to postpone a pre-season friendly against the new Rangers.

The Ibrox outfit were unable to play because the SFA has yet to approve the club’s membership.

“So a thanks must go to the SFA for having a negative impact on not only the top end of Scottish football but the lower end also,” said Kelty.

The testimonial game for an experienced Kely midfielder will be re-arranged.

Ally McCoist’s side have only played games behind closed doors at their Murray Park training ground as they are not licensed to play official fixtures.

They are due to play their first game of the season, against Brechin City in the Ramsdens Cup, on Saturday.

But they are still in negotiations with the SFA, Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League about the conditions for membership after they were denied a place in the top flight and placed in Division Three.

“The Stefan Winiarski testimonial match between Kelty Hearts and Rangers on Wednesday has been postponed to a later date due to the SFA not granting Rangers a licence to play any matches, friendlies or competitive,” said the East Superleague club on their website.

“Rangers have instructed us that an alternative date will be arranged very soon so all tickets and hospitality tickets are still valid for the match.

“We are all gutted with all the work done sending tickets out etc, money spent and time put in by volunteers to make the night a great one.

“As you can imagine, Stefan is also sick at this outcome.

“Programmes have been printed, food ordered, marquee for hospitality etc.”

Rangers fans have already bought the entire away allocation for their match against Brechin at Glebe Park as the club’s Sevco owners announced that they are charging up to 50% less for season tickets in the Third Division.

While the prices have been announced, they will not sell season tickets until they secure SFA membership.

“We hope to provide further details on the timing of season ticket renewal distribution and payment methods later in the week once the position becomes clearer,” they announced.

  18. Moravcik,

Yes I remember that, did they also cancel a game against a team with rangers in their name.

I remember one team being angry. Im sure they played a game against Airdrie with no officials as they weren’t insured.
