Commons needed for busy February

963

Neil Lennon’s comments that he will need to sell at Bolton Wanderers before making a bid for Kris Commons, or anyone else, are welcome.  Celtic have four important games in the four weeks after this transfer window closes: home and away to Inter Milan, Aberdeen in the league, and a League Cup semi-final against newco Rangers.  Commons will be vital for some, if not all of these games.

Inter will play on the front foot and Aberdeen have the players to take the game to us, as they did in the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park last season, but I expect newco to defend their 18 yard line in numbers, a bit like Ross County did last week, a scenario which will require someone with Commons’ craft.

Neil Warnock’s sacking at Crystal Palace was good news, as he wanted Commons, had money to spend and could offer the allure of top-flight football.  Neil Lennon would be able to offer Commons familiarity, but with Bolton spending a total of £300k in the summer, their chances of being able to afford a bid for Commons that would raise Celtic’s interest are limited.

  1. On the few occasions we have actually seen him play I have always said to my son that Wakaso is not a winger, he is a central midfielder. Never knew he had previously played as defensive midfielder but it makes sense. He can tackle, his instinct is to track back and when in possession he always comes inside.

  2. Not a thing seems to have been learned by the people who run our game or the SMSM in the past three years. Cannot wait for the day we get out of this hell hole and play our football elsewhere .

You are on the money with that one. He would have any ideas of holding onto the ball more than 2 seconds knocked out of him in an instant.

The same thing happened with Gauld. A sensation for a few months and then the SPFL hard men smashed him in every game, before Sporting Lisbon rescued him from the madness.

    Only time will tell.

I would love to see the club spend big money in the transfer window, making a statement of intent so to speak.

Winning the fourth title on the bounce is going to be a difficult hurdle to negotiate, but we can do this.

It’s all in our own hands.

    Don’t throw it away Celtic.

    Thanks for the courteous responses.

  5. I see PL mentioned several times again. I think people should accept he is a Celtic fan, qualified to do his job well who relies on other people to do what he needs them to. For example, we have spent about £10 mill or so on strikers over the last three years, plus wages on top. So far no one has stood out that we have bought. Not including loans. Look at the records, no goals over any length of time. Scepovic was the best record but again only a great six months before he came. If we had nailed a good striker in the last three years we would be miles away from Scottish football. I think we struggle cause the scouts don’t know what they are looking for? PL probably needs to bring in a man to find a quality striker for less than 3mill. Not something he can do himself tbh.

  6. Ronny needs to get Commons in the team in a system that is going to suit our forward players and win us the league.

The system being employed is not working. 34 goals in 18 SPL matches with 11 of those scored in 2 games.

Commons and Stokes are the best options available to RD. Hopefully after the blank against County he’ll realise this.

It would help explain why on one of his few starts at Celtic Park ( versus Hamilton perhaps) he basically stood on the touch line and didn’t make any runs into space to become available for a pass.

He seemed kinda lost. Mibbee he was.

Either way, I feel for the ghuy. Not really had a chance to show anything. Assume he’ll be away for Africas Cup? So we’ll likely never know…

Or we should be looking for creative midfielders who create chances for the strikers, something we are clearly lacking.

In saying that our scouting of strikers is shocking and the person who thought Balde was a better option than Russell last summer should be sacked.

    regarding Scott Allan.

One of his uncles did some work in our house last May.

We got talking about football and said one of his nephews was on loan at Birmingham from West Brom.

He told me he was at a Birmingham game a few weeks earlier watching his nephew, Scott Allan play.

He told me Scott was being freed by the Baggies and his preference was to join a London club as he would get hardly any hassle off the park there.

Obviously clubs in England weren’t impressed with his spell in England and wasn’t pursued.

I don’t think he would want to sign for us if we were interested in him, if he would rather have as little hassle as possible off the pitch.

PS his uncle was told by Scott that Nichola Zigic, was on £80 grand a week at Birmingham then. Zigic was freed by Birmingham but has re-signed presumably for a lot less wages.

We went to the Pollok Shettleston game today at Newlandsfield, 4 3 to Pollok. Delighted for their boss, Tony McInally, a great Celtic man. Pollok played the game on the deck as much as possible. It was good going to a game with no emotional involvement.

Sorry for the late reply to your post, farming takes precedence. :-)

My opinion of our latest adventure is one of total apprehension. I believe RD is asking players to play a system they have no idea whatsoever what that system is. The old, square pegs in round holes, springs to mind. We have gone backwards as a team and the attendances are perfect proof of this. I have missed one home game this season, through injury, which was well documented on this blog. I am not enjoying the product on the park one little bit, with the Dun Utd game an exception. The base of this team won the league last season by a massive 29 pts, we had the best defensive record in the UK, what has caused this to change so dramatically??? Answers on a postcard to the Celtic Board.

The only way this experiment is going to show any sort of success is for PL to supply RD with the correct funds to replenish the team with the type of players, with the appropriate skills required to suit and promote this system, and do it in this window. We have a guaranteed £30m income for qualification to the group stages of the CL next season. Winning the title would ensure our participation in the qualifiying rounds, but it will take a team who know each other, bare minimum, to progress to the group stages. Leaving signings to the summer window is not an option. That will be a total flop. But hey ho, I’ll still support the team on the park and will renew my ST, finances permitting. Sorry for the long rant, nice to chat. KTF. Like I do. :-)))

Vidar Riseth was in a bar in Oslo 3 weeks ago and was asked by a couple of us about Odegaard and the chances of him signing for us.

He knows the family. He said Odegaard would almost certainly be going to either Germany or England, with Spain as an outside possibility.

He said there was a “slim to nothing” chance of the boy signing for us.

Cannot see it happening. Either KC will sit in until the summer like Sammi as no one will pay him what he is currently on.

So either a fee for him or he will be loaned out with us paying a percentage of his wage.

If I’m honest, four years ago I thought of stokes as a stop gap striker who would fall into a third choice role. Never happened.

I think if we had a quality striker, with a bit of height and good movement he would rattle the net with us. I know some might not agree but I feel a good striker actually worth 3mill would score 25 league goals for Celtic a season. Stevie May and Russel were good, I’m sure Austin at QPR was linked, Michu at the time would have been a stroke. I know hindsight and all that. Just think a scout should be told, 3mill, find us a quality striker to get goals in the spfl under 24. Even fits the model. Score fifty league goals over two years and they are worth double. If they really progress we have a new talisman striker.

The truth is surely as a scout you look at top goalscorers across league of a similar standard and that’s your start? I’d never recommend a non scoring striker unless he was blatantly a quality number 10. Would any of us?
