Commons needed for busy February

963

Neil Lennon’s comments that he will need to sell at Bolton Wanderers before making a bid for Kris Commons, or anyone else, are welcome.  Celtic have four important games in the four weeks after this transfer window closes: home and away to Inter Milan, Aberdeen in the league, and a League Cup semi-final against newco Rangers.  Commons will be vital for some, if not all of these games.

Inter will play on the front foot and Aberdeen have the players to take the game to us, as they did in the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park last season, but I expect newco to defend their 18 yard line in numbers, a bit like Ross County did last week, a scenario which will require someone with Commons’ craft.

Neil Warnock’s sacking at Crystal Palace was good news, as he wanted Commons, had money to spend and could offer the allure of top-flight football.  Neil Lennon would be able to offer Commons familiarity, but with Bolton spending a total of £300k in the summer, their chances of being able to afford a bid for Commons that would raise Celtic’s interest are limited.

  1. Chris.

Given the article posted last few days maybe the journos are doing the “what do fans know ” routine.

Having said that my contact there just couldn’t believe cleric would take an unfinished work in progress manager.

    Let’s see.

  2. Evening Celts.

If you could, take a minute out and think of Pauline Cafferkey, who, according to reports,is entering a critical stage of treatment over the next few hours for Ebola.

Guidetti will have to do a lot of searching. There aren’t a lot of teams playing two up front. Man City do and so do Man United and he’s not good enough for them.

  4. I remember the days when I used to get excited about new Celtic signings…….

Back in the day we were able to pull off some massive coups……. Signing Joe Miller , pipping Manure into the bargain, MacAvennie from West Ham, Hartson, Sutton, Lennon, even Signing Judas from Watford who were in the top division at the time.

I have absolutely no illusions any signing this window will not excite the support.

Such a shame we don’t back our Managers.

  8. chrisvancoupon – at the moment the ST income probably covers the cost of running Celtic before the football side of things comes into consideration.

  10. Martin Ødegaard is 16 years old and is about to become a millionaire if he chooses certain clubs, him picking Celtic ahead of all those others would be unheard of in modern football.

Perhaps but I just do not believe we are his No. 1 choice, time will tell.

I’ll throw another name out there:

  13. Lee Wallace? Not a chance, we would not pay the wage he is currently on.I am not being snide, he is vastly overpaid for a Scottish league player.

BGX. Only if we cant land Max Power who is a better player all round in my opinion than Armstrong. H.H.

Celtic fans of American Football, swithering about who to support this Wild Card week-end, can join me in cheering perennial underdogs Cincinnati Bengals tomorrow, away against Indianapolis Colts.

The Bengals are a grand old blue-collar team in a blue-collar sport which has never won a Superbowl in their 48 years. I’m drawn to them because their home ground, Paul Brown Stadium, is nicknamed “The Jungle” and the club song is Guns’n Roses “Welcome to the Jungle”.

    Works for me, twice.

So, come on Andy “the red rifle” Dalton. Let’s go, Bengals.

    I don’t think so, either.

The way he’s been playing of late, there won’t be that big a queue. He should keep that in mind.

Lennybhoy. Kojos been talking about him for at least a couple of weeks. However,I dont think any of us really has a clue but more worrying is if they dont sign anyone. H.H.

  22. JFH…i just think ARMSTRONG..played in the league…no brainer…great energy..can pass.can score gets forward…gets back..as he gets older i just think he will be some player…

BGX. I would take Armstrong but if I was given the choice I would take Max Power first to me three good seasons in the hoops and he would be worth a fortune.Just what big Peter likes. H.H.

    Max Power.

Kept seeing his name pop up on here and at first I thought someone was at it and doing a Kaiser Sosa type of thing sitting in front of their washing machine and struggling to come up with a name to start a rumour with.

There I was today watching the scores come in and low and behold hes bloody real.

Would he look as good at Celtic? Three reasons I can think of why he wouldn’t :

    1. Opposition play 11 men in defence against Celtic – so he wouldn’t get the same chances and would find it just as difficult as our other strikers to break down the opposition.

    2. MIBs would be pulling cards out left, right and centre.

    3. He would be played out of position in the current setup – i.e. to fit a system rather than to his strengths.

Same is true of any forward we sign.

    WDYT?
