Confederated league gathers pace as Belarus bids to join

905

The momentum for a confederated regional league in Eastern Europe continues to gather pace with clubs from Belarus keen to join.  With a population of around 10m, Belarus is sandwiched between Russia, Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic states, but their league has been rendered uncompetitive by the domination of Bate Borisov, who are on their way to eight-in-a-row titles.

Bate, who are now Champions League regulars, have no opportunity to progress while the rest of the league do not have the resources to compete with them.  A regional league would solve all their problems.

Russian and Ukrainian clubs are aiming to have a confederated league in place by the start of 2014, with sponsors thought to be keen to step forward and underwrite whatever is necessary to smooth the way, but the Ukrainian FA suggest 2016 is a more viable date.

Scottish football stands to gain more from regionalisation than anywhere else on the planet. We need to have this debate before blindly stumbling into another Management of Decline while legislators in Minsk leave us behind!

Today is the last guaranteed posting date for CQN Annuals before Christmas, so if you haven’t ordered yet, this is your chance.

Many thanks for the tremendous support of the Annual in recent weeks.  We have shipped lots to Australia, Canada and USA, across various European and Asian countries, and to hundreds of towns and cities across Scotland, England and Ireland.  Even Ayrshire!

Last guaranteed date before Christmas. You can order the CQN Annual here!

Jude, I’m only on page five. By the time I get to the end of the thread I’m sure the blame will have shifted from plod to Peter Lawell who was spotted through the ibrox mist on a heavy armoured horse.

Hopefully peter also wore his heavy steelies.

    Samaras becomes a double-century Bhoy..

STANDING inside the tunnel, Georgios Samaras points down towards the Lisbon Lions stand. “They took me through the back door over there so the media didn’t see me,” he recalled. “I had a meeting with Gordon Strachan and Peter Lawwell, and then came through the stadium and down the tunnel. That was the first time I´d seen the park and I was speechless.”

The Greek striker was looking back to January 2008, his first day at Celtic, because having just come off the pitch against St Mirren on Saturday, he learnt that he had reached another milestone in his career.

He already has many achievements to boast about – he´s competed in the UEFA Champions League twice, and twice he has qualified for the last 16. He is also the only Celt to have ever scored in five consecutive away European matches, which he’s done this season.

But at the weekend, in the 2-0 win against St Mirren, Samaras added another achievement to his golden CV, having played his 200th match for the club.

The total moves him into 100th place in terms of appearances made by past and present Celtic players, and out of the current squad, he is second to just Scott Brown who is 18 games ahead of him.

When congratulated on his success after the match, Samaras was unaware he had been on the verge of another momentous milestone, but he couldn’t hide his joy at the news.

With a smile on his face he shared his immediate reaction with the Celtic View, and said: “I didn’t have a clue. I´m not really good with stats, but now that I know, my first thoughts are that I am really proud.

“I’m proud that I’m part of this football club and I want to say a big thank-you to Gordon Strachan for bringing me here and a big thank-you to Neil Lennon for keeping me here.

“I am a little bit romantic, if you know what I mean. I want to stay in one team and try to spend most of my time at the same club if I can. I was in Holland for five years and I had a great time there – I had a good bond with the team. I like to serve a club for many years and hopefully I can do that for Celtic.”

Ironically, for a player who likes to stay as faithful to one club as possible, Samaras began his Celtic career as a loan Bhoy. He joined the Hoops from Manchester City, almost five years to the day, and he still remembers it clearly.

“The stadium was empty but you still feel something when there’s no-one in it,” he said. “I knew Celtic were a big club and I knew all about the history but being a part of that is something special.

“Nothing has really changed since. Things have been good and bad but in the end what stays is the love for the club.

“Every football player has good and bad moments, the road is not straight, but that´s normal, that´s life. What stays in the end, though, is your love for football and your love for Celtic.”
