Conflict of interest Ogilvie

860

As newco chief executive, Derek Llambias reported to his AGM yesterday, he meets the SFA today to discuss further involvement of Newcastle United owner, Mike Ashley at his club.  Ashley is nearing the end of a power-struggle between his faction, which appears to include the Easdale brothers, and pretty-much everyone else who goes to Ibrox, as well as Dave King and other worthies noticeable by their absence when the assets of oldco were to be paid for.

One of this morning’s newspapers appears to suggest SFA board member Peter Lawwell may retire from this meeting on account of him apparently having a conflict of interest, however, I believe this would be extraordinarily unlikely.  Peter is no more or less incentive to see business being conducted appropriately than anyone else.

That’s not to say there’s not a conflict of interest.  SFA president, Campbell Ogilvie, will also attend the meeting.  Ogilvie passed his Rangers shares to his wife when he became an executive director of Hearts.  SFA Articles of Association expressly forbids a person from having an influence with one club while “directly or indirectly” being a shareholder in another without the prior written consent of the SFA.

Mr Ogilvie may have attained prior written consent of the SFA on this subject before accepting the Hearts job, but if he did, I don’t see the need to transfer his shares to a family member.  This makes Ogilvie look like a tawdry ducker and diver, wholly inappropriate to lead the Association. If I was Llambias I’d challenge Ogilvie the first moment he opened his mouth.

As I said earlier in the week, don’t get too hung up on Ashley’s shareholding.  If it proves a stumbling block he could play The Offshore Game and quickly disinvest to an entity based in the British Virgin Islands (seems to be the hot location for these types), the control of which could never be traced to him.

Those hoping the SFA will inhibit Ashley’s land-grab of retail and other rights are also likely to be disappointed.  JJB and Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan established precedent that he was able to conclude extensive trading contract with other clubs while in charge of Wigan without compromising multi-ownership principles.  Ashley can own and exploit all commercial rights of newco.

The key point Ashley will be concerned about in SFA rules is article 13. (3), which forbids persons from having “any power whatsoever to influence the management or administration of another club”.

The rules permit the SFA to grant Ashley permission to increase his shareholding but the phrase “any power whatsoever” is patently clear.  Ashley cannot appoint board members or offer loan players.

The Dear Green Place

Yesterday’s uncertainty alarmed many in Glasgow but the reality of the news brought disaster to some.  May God help each of them.

There’s always a spring in the step when news of our pal Kano arrives.  That changed when I opened the email from Carolyn yesterday to hear Martin was in Intensive Care.  We know through his time on the blog that Kano brought vigour and resolve to his life years before his illness struck.  If anyone can overcome this, it’s him.

Exchanged another couple of messages with Laura, tells me that she has read the messages on CQN says she really appreciates them and says we are an amazing family.

She also described her old Dad as a wee gem. Not sure I recognise you from that description…lol. Oh and she didn’t use the word old I threw that in…:)

Seriously, she is an absolute credit to you and H.

I have flagged up Scott Allen of Hibs previously. My HIbs mates have said he is playing superbly. The level is obviously a bit below our league but he is a very able player and will clearly shine for Hibernian.

I noted yesterday that GMS is on Celtic’s radar as well as Aberdeens. If he is available for a few hundred grand in January due to his contract only having 6 months to run I would be tempted. Ship back the loans and get shot of Derk and bring in GMS and Anya. Sign up Guidetti and get a centre back in. I see Paul McShane has fell out with Steve Bruce at Hull. He would tick a box for me. Experienced and with something to prove. A good player to get on a loan to buy. Try him out between now and the end of the season and if he is not working out ship back to Hull.

Doesn;t really matter who Lenny brings in. The objective is the play offs. I think he has been wise bringing in Gudjohnsen and Heskey. Heskey is very under rated. When England pumped the Germans 5-1 in Germany Heskey was outstanding. His experience could be vital to Bolton to make those play offs and maybe even get to the EPL.

Lenny is doing a fine job so far.

My post was tongue in cheek – I think that Lenny is doing a sterling job considering the financial constraints at Bolton and playing in a league where FFP is actually applied.

I go to a few English Championship games – its a really good league with a very decent standard and teams are not afraid to field younger players. I would think that Heskey and Gudjohnsen can only be used pretty sparingly – but I agree that Lenny is doing a great job under difficult circumstances….in markedly stark contrast to the now departed pieman.

I have always been a big fan of GMS but I am very aware that playing for Celtic is a very different matter. Packed defences, much bigger stage and fans with high (unreasonable?) expectations are all important factors.

  14. I laughed at this mornings red tops, all slobbering ove the new RIFC manager, McDowell gets promotion?

McDowell say’s when they ASKED (he he ) him to take the job as head coach (he SAIS asked about six times) he said he had to be professional about it and accepted it, .

He was TOLD that was his job, and if he didn’t like it he would be sacked and a broken contract meant no wages, and the same went for snozzle (durantie) too, oh! And you have to admire the camaraderie the board TOLD McDowell to tell snozzle he was demoted, and you know what he did, .

So when you read between the lines looks like the board called there bluff and it worked, now someone try telling me that’s a happy coaching staff THEMS have?

    It’s all about the money.

    1. We expect to strenghten the squad with 3/4 signings.

    2. We hope to add 2/3 players

    3. January is a difficult month to sign good players.

    4. It’s more important to keep our own players than sign new ones.

Two reasonable signings and one who’s did very little to date.

Our most fruitful league for signings in recent years is the Championship down South, Wilson, Ledley, Matthews, Hooper, and Commons.

Unfortunately players there are now edging towards stupid prices.

See Ronny giving team a 6 out of 10 midseason report. I give Ronny 4 out of 10. Not impressed in the slightest. Will see after transfer window. Ronny 1 system.

  22. Gary,

Which one has done little? Yer old name sake?

I thought he was pretty good pre-injury. Not getting much of a look in now.

Aye the top two leagues in England are crazy priced. Looking elsewhere is a must.

How much do you think Murphy would go for now? ;)

  23. Celtic board, have the same contempt for their fans, as the sevco board showed to their fans. Basically GTF.

Maybe Big Peter and lackeys haven’t noticed that CP is half empty on match days.

And any sevco/hun board are secure in the knowledge, that they can cheat with abandon, because Big Peter and minions will always look the other way.

The Celtic board are complicit cowards imo.

Scoddish fitba stinks with the stench of corruption….as far as im concerned, you can stick that where the sun don’t shine.

We need rid of this board, they are totally shameless in their bowing and scraping to the huns….they don’t represent Celtic, they represent themselves….which is quite obvious if you see the money they are personally getting….for what exactly are they being rewarded for?….For taking us backwards, and being complicit in the attempted resurrection of the old firm?

Peter, you are a total chancer…..anywhere else you would have been sacked.

    No Old Firm

Say no to corruption in Scottish Football

  25. good morning CQN

this year has been good and bad for me (Celtic wise) in many ways

the good points for me have been…… the continued demise of thems over at the Bigot Dome, my discovering of this blog & also phil mac giollabhain’s blog. both have become an important part of my daily life, i don’t often post but enjoy reading those who do, its clear to see almost all on here have the love of celtic deep in their hearts whether they agree or disagree with the direction our custodians are taking our club.

the bad point this year for me…….NFL, a true Celtic legend leaving us, down at Bolton i hope he has huge sucess, already he is showing he is a very good football manager. i’m not convinced with RD yet, a new manager should play a system using the players strengths (which NFL did), not fit the players into a system if they are not that type of player.

my wish for 2015……Our custodians, when making any reference to the LC semi final will bill this as either a Glasgow derby or the first meeting between Celtic and The Rangers. any reference to Old Firm or a welcome back to Celtic v Rangers is in my view unnaceptable.

anyways Ghuys and Ghirls, i wish you all a merry Christmas, stay safe, times are good for us as Celtic supporters in many ways. I am as my moniker says ‘proud to be part of the Celtic Family’

God bless you all, and those whose lives have been devestated with the recent George Square tragedy.
