Consistency needed before talk of trebles

796

This is the last day to complete our survey into who we, the Celtic community, are, our thoughts, values and where we came from.  It’s a short, anonymous, survey, with questions on the Living Wage, the Offensive Behaviour Act, Resolution 12 and other topics, including your view on last week’s referendum.

Thousands of people have already taken part so we will have an excellent insight into what the Celtic community looks like in 2014.  If you’ve not already participated, you can let your voice be heard here.

A European academic has compiled the survey and we’ll publish findings shortly.

It’s refreshing to hear a manager be frank about a sporting forgone conclusion, as Ronny did yesterday, “we are definitely going to win the league”.  More importantly, he added “The goal is the treble”.

For reasons which have never been evident, apart from Jock Stein’s first five seasons, and a gloriously sunny day in 1957, Celtic have underachieved on a massive scale in the League Cup, a trophy we haven’t won in the last five seasons.

It’s maybe been seen as too much of a poor-relation when the team have higher targets in mind, but it’s more accurate to say we have been an ill-prepared soft touch since Jock’s five-in-a-row came to an end.  Superior performances in the Scottish Cup suggest there is more than the randomness of cup football at play in the League trophy.

I never understood the criticisms of Neil Lennon for his ‘failure’ to win the treble.  We achieved this feat only three times in our history.  Even when we won the league, the vast majority of times we failed to win both cups was as a result of defeat to someone other than Rangers, so their liquidation in 2012 should not affect the trend.

Ronny is three games away from his first trophy as a Celtic manager; he will be hot favourite for each of them.  On paper, the Scottish Cup will present no more danger, but winning two cups takes a level of consistency that even the great [and consistent]Celtic teams struggled to achieve.

Before we consider the treble we need to find consistency in the league and Europa League, starting with wins and clean sheets against St Mirren and Dinamo Zagreb.  If we can do this, this could yet be a memorable season.

Remember the survey closes tonight!

If we don’t have the players, why are we persevering with it ?

And I know young Henderson had a poor game earlier in season

    But

I personally would be building a team around him and Biton

Henderson could play right side of midfield 4, or even move Broony oot there, it is his best position ? ( also have wee Jamesy to come back who will strengthen Right hand side)

How about Johansen wide left ?

I do believe we could be playing much stronger as a team, with a bit of thought to what we have

And do agree, Celtic talk :-)

    Hail Hail

  3. If ra sellic score 3 goals tomorrow they will have scored the exact same amount of goals as they did in the first 15 games last season.

  4. 67 European Cup Winners on

I”m a little excited about tomorrow – Paul67 mentioned about consistency – I want to see us dominate teams like we did second half against Hearts

But then a dose of reality kicks in – no two games have been the same since RD took over

He changes the team and we lose consistency

So who knows what tomorrow will bring

    Its never boring

PFAyr, I thought at the time using Boro as an example would be questioned.

I was just trying to cite an example of a new manager, he was the special git’s assistant at Real, of wanting to play a certain way but knew he didn’t have the players to play it. He introduced it in a gradual way and has a possibilty of having their best season for years.

I wonder if he was on our short list for manager.

…We are much worse than last season ….cannae keep a clean sheet and can barely score.

We are not as organised as last season; this in my opinion contributes to how poorly we are performing. The other reason is like you, I do not believe we have the quality to play the system.

On the scoring front, I think Guidetti will score for us. Unsure about Scepovic, he has not settled but does have a track record.

    Keep the Faith!

  7. Well Gnite

Up at at 5.00 to watch the Grand Final,Aussie Rules, when hopefully a Fanad Mhan,Liam Shiels ,will lift his second medal.

I will wear the jersey, given to me by his dad Michael, proudly.

    Miles apart but heartbeats away.

  8. Managers in the job for 5 minutes, he is scouting the squad!

He didn’t know much about the squad before June.

And pre-season will have told him little, he needs to see players in different games, situations to assess them.

He may have, he may not have, known a lot about the players signed(hope he did).

He moves players around to find the best fit.

That takes a bit of time. Hopefully he will find the players he trust, but then when they play poorly, who will criticise him for sticking with the same old players?

The lack of cohesion is concerning though.

Was at St Pat’s with John Divers. Remember he and Jacky Gilroy used to kick the ball around in Big Jake’s gym at school lunch time along with some of the other St Pat’s boys who went on to teams like Hibs and Sunderland :<)

Joe Davin, Joe Wilson, Nicky Sharkey, John O'Hare…the latter might be a wee bit later.

  13. MARVELLOUS

Just watched on BBC player and if Lou Macari is portrayed

Honestly then fair play to him.

Also had Gary Tank commander from recent Maestro’s game.

  14. ….PFAyr, he has, can’t say otherwise,.

However, we only notice the obvious parts of decisions, he will, if he is thorough, be assessing partnerships, and how different ones mix, with each other, and with those around them. I still think we are in the early days of his tenure, and knee jerk reactions are not productive.

I would like to see more than one formation played, that would show adaptability.

A rigid formation, system or philosophy is seldom successful, unless you have the Lisbon Lions, or Barca of recent times playing.

  15. Dallas Dallas

It was my mate who told me about Boro.

Theur manager has changed the team, but he has done it over a season, slowly getting in players who fit has system, they now have a squad and everyone knows the system.

Agreed Boro are not Celtic, but I would wager they would beat us the morra given the chance.

We are miles away from what we were a couple of short years ago, and some of the scouts new boys are not up to it IMO, but as ever the manager will carry the can.

Personally, I think he needs to play to the strengths of the players, they are not good enough for his system.

Tis his head on the block, he will either get them to gel, or he is a gonner.

    HH

  16. Oh, but, there is a but.

A system, a formation can become that success, if we are patient enough to allow that to be built into the fabric of the club.

But we are talking years for that to come to fruition.

And I mean Ronny’s, not John Parks.

We are persevering in it my friend for one reason. Whether you, me or anyone else agrees or disagrees Ronny by and large believes in his system and the Personnel at his disposal. Time will tell if we are correct or Ronny is. The Board’s money is on Ronny, not us.

I am not a fan of Jamsey but believe he would have more to offer Ronny’s system.

Young Henderson, yeah sure give him a chance. Ronny obviously sees more in McGregor, personally think Callum needs to be taken out of the Team so perhaps Liam could come in.

Broony’s best position in my opinion is wide right but that doesn’t fit in with Ronny’s system.

Johannsen by and large has been disappointing in the centre, again it’s Ronny’s decision.

The inference I come to is; it is Ronny’s Gig, Ronny’s system and choice. We unfortunately have to like it or lump it and continue to debate what the system should be.

    Keep the Faith!

  19. Doc

Just a personal opinion, young McGregor has been poor for past month ?

Why is Ronny not dealing with this failing area in the team ?

Concern for me, he is constantly leaving Efe exposed

    Hail Hail

  20. @frankieboyle: It’s important for Britain to defend itself by bombing IS, in the same way you defend yourself from a wasps’ nest by hitting it with a stick

  21. Don’t know if RD has ever had a fully fit squad to pick from,

would be interesting to see what team and formation

he would play if he had everyone available for selection,

I am still in the give him time camp, but agree some performances have been shocking

  22. Lennybhoy

    Positive debate though :-)

It is good to see others views, but, ignore Doc’s he knows more aboot the rim of a pie

  23. The posts from pfayr/ht are spot on…too many times we charge up the park without covering our coat tail.

At times it looks like we are playing with four wingers and two in mid, as said before, a decent manager with a good counter attacking team would utilise our gaps on the wings, as has been done on numerous occasions.

Just glad we’ve got a good goalie to bail us out with the haphazard formation we are using.

Looking for some info if possible from Dundee Bhoys. My lad has just started at Dundee Uni and is looking for a good pub to watch the Celtic games. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
