Consistency needed before talk of trebles

796

This is the last day to complete our survey into who we, the Celtic community, are, our thoughts, values and where we came from.  It’s a short, anonymous, survey, with questions on the Living Wage, the Offensive Behaviour Act, Resolution 12 and other topics, including your view on last week’s referendum.

Thousands of people have already taken part so we will have an excellent insight into what the Celtic community looks like in 2014.  If you’ve not already participated, you can let your voice be heard here.

A European academic has compiled the survey and we’ll publish findings shortly.

It’s refreshing to hear a manager be frank about a sporting forgone conclusion, as Ronny did yesterday, “we are definitely going to win the league”.  More importantly, he added “The goal is the treble”.

For reasons which have never been evident, apart from Jock Stein’s first five seasons, and a gloriously sunny day in 1957, Celtic have underachieved on a massive scale in the League Cup, a trophy we haven’t won in the last five seasons.

It’s maybe been seen as too much of a poor-relation when the team have higher targets in mind, but it’s more accurate to say we have been an ill-prepared soft touch since Jock’s five-in-a-row came to an end.  Superior performances in the Scottish Cup suggest there is more than the randomness of cup football at play in the League trophy.

I never understood the criticisms of Neil Lennon for his ‘failure’ to win the treble.  We achieved this feat only three times in our history.  Even when we won the league, the vast majority of times we failed to win both cups was as a result of defeat to someone other than Rangers, so their liquidation in 2012 should not affect the trend.

Ronny is three games away from his first trophy as a Celtic manager; he will be hot favourite for each of them.  On paper, the Scottish Cup will present no more danger, but winning two cups takes a level of consistency that even the great [and consistent]Celtic teams struggled to achieve.

Before we consider the treble we need to find consistency in the league and Europa League, starting with wins and clean sheets against St Mirren and Dinamo Zagreb.  If we can do this, this could yet be a memorable season.

Remember the survey closes tonight!

You were asking about New York

Here are 2 things I would recommend

Presuming you have an interest in Irish History ,Go visit the grave of Thomas Addis Emmet (older brother of Robert Emmet) He is buried in the Graveyard of St Marks in The Bowery,as we dont know where Robert is buried the visit to the grave of his older brother (an also irish rebel) is the next best thing

after that go for a beer around the corner (almost literally) in McSorleys Old Ale House on East 7th Street (near the corner of 3rd Ave) This is one of the oldest pubs in New York, originally owned by a Irish Emigrant called McSorley from Co Tyrone it stayed in his family for a couple of generations and was then bought by another Irish Amercian family, its been left as it was in the 19th century complete with pot bellied stove, well worth a visit some afternoon

    Enjoy

Ronnie, like Neil before him, believes that Izzy should be able to do the work of three men, full back, wide midfielder, and attacking winger. Who gets blamed when he fails to cover back. Leicester city showed how to deal with a manager who shares a similar philosophy. Izzy has, or should have six players playing in front of him, and yet is expected to put in a bigger shift than any of them. Stokes helped the other night, and Griffith last season to a similar extent but Izzy has had to play behind more than his fair share of players thus far, could be five or six if I checked. Time for whoever is playing in midfield or up front to take more responsibility for whatever Ronnie is trying to do going forward.

  4. Cowiebhoy,

The guy better lie low for a bit.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the guy who found all the YES votes in a rubbish bin?

Izzy was absolutely immense on Wednesday night, his link up play with Stokes was effective and a joy to watch.

It was noticeable that it was Izzy who did the bulk of the running though.

  11. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Celtic mac & Cowie bhoy, according to some of our support both Efe & Izzy are mince but never take into account or observe the reasons why they aren’t playing as well as they can.

Both need a rest as has been pointed out by posters on here and our playing system does not help either full back. Both Efe & Izzy like playing for us and have played in the last world cup. They don’t become bad players in the wink of an eye.

Some thought a player like Joe Ledley didn’t do as much as they thought he should, Joe done a lot of work off the ball like covering for Izzy.

  12. j67

    Just seen it on Twitter.

    Something stinks that’s for sure.

Just like Deidco saga ,however, I’m sure it will be swept under that massive Masonic carpet.

I don’t agree with this feeling that Izzy needs a break as much as many Celtic supporters.

I think, more than anything, he needs support on that left hand side.

  14. Bloody Timternet crashed there

HT – Good seat eh :-)

I see there was 15000 at game, so I can only assume there is around 13000 ticket holders in the home cup scheme ? Struggle even further with why they have given mine away for Europa League

No interest in league cup for me ( Celtic do not get all the gate receipts for these games) but they ( Celtic) lost out on £120 for Europa games

    Hail Hail

  15. what is the stars – that’s a great shout mate. Wife is from Dublin so it covers all bases. Thanks.

  16. HT,

No, but my physics teacher a Mr brunges, would give you a choice of the belt or leaning over a bench and getting smacked on the a**e with a cricket bat.

He would smack a bench with his belt before giving you the option, the bench had a huge dent in it due to his years of belting it…this led to most opting for the cricket bat, which, obviously gave him some sort of perverse gratification.

Are you making the Hootenanny mate?

  17. Ghuys,

You all know the story about Sean Rean, George and Linda’s stillborn Son. After George’s untimely passing on 5th October last year Linda set up Sean’s Trust in order to buy a couple of Lodges by Loch Lomond. The purpose to send Families who suffered similar heartache a place to go for some respite.

Terry Christian will be performing his Play, Naked Confessions of a Recovering Catholic at the People’s Palace on Friday 24th October. This is to mark the first anniversary of Sean’s Trust. Linda tells me that Terry’s Set is about two hours. Followed by a Q&A and a set by Billy No ‘Well. There will also be a Buffet and Bar.

  19. Dallas & HT

Ronny really needs to decide on a team structure, both wingers who are part of our midfield are not supporting the full backs ( in saying that Tonev does at times), so we need to tell full backs to play there and let wingers do the overlapping and attacks

    Or

Get a left and right sided midfielders who will work as a midfielder and support, both defence and forwards ( play a 4,4,2)
