Consistency needed before talk of trebles

796

This is the last day to complete our survey into who we, the Celtic community, are, our thoughts, values and where we came from.  It’s a short, anonymous, survey, with questions on the Living Wage, the Offensive Behaviour Act, Resolution 12 and other topics, including your view on last week’s referendum.

Thousands of people have already taken part so we will have an excellent insight into what the Celtic community looks like in 2014.  If you’ve not already participated, you can let your voice be heard here.

A European academic has compiled the survey and we’ll publish findings shortly.

It’s refreshing to hear a manager be frank about a sporting forgone conclusion, as Ronny did yesterday, “we are definitely going to win the league”.  More importantly, he added “The goal is the treble”.

For reasons which have never been evident, apart from Jock Stein’s first five seasons, and a gloriously sunny day in 1957, Celtic have underachieved on a massive scale in the League Cup, a trophy we haven’t won in the last five seasons.

It’s maybe been seen as too much of a poor-relation when the team have higher targets in mind, but it’s more accurate to say we have been an ill-prepared soft touch since Jock’s five-in-a-row came to an end.  Superior performances in the Scottish Cup suggest there is more than the randomness of cup football at play in the League trophy.

I never understood the criticisms of Neil Lennon for his ‘failure’ to win the treble.  We achieved this feat only three times in our history.  Even when we won the league, the vast majority of times we failed to win both cups was as a result of defeat to someone other than Rangers, so their liquidation in 2012 should not affect the trend.

Ronny is three games away from his first trophy as a Celtic manager; he will be hot favourite for each of them.  On paper, the Scottish Cup will present no more danger, but winning two cups takes a level of consistency that even the great [and consistent]Celtic teams struggled to achieve.

Before we consider the treble we need to find consistency in the league and Europa League, starting with wins and clean sheets against St Mirren and Dinamo Zagreb.  If we can do this, this could yet be a memorable season.

Remember the survey closes tonight!

  1. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

PFAyr, I hope Middlesborough don’t do your coupon in.

When we were on honeymoon, a guy at the same hotel was a Middlesborough fan who wore that horrible defunct club adidas top, one of the many. They are a club I don’t like but they did well to get the manager in that they did.

Wee Gordon bemoaned the fact that it was passionless club with supporters who were the same.

  2. CowieBhoy, one transfer window does not a team build.

We are far too quick to demand success, too quick to condemn failure.

McGregor is a kid, going forward he does well, but he leaves his full back without cover, that same FB a has to get forward in that system, the CB a has to get over to cover that position as CM doesn’t drop in. Which pulls the whole of one side of the team out of position.

I’m pretty sure Ronny see’s that, but he is working on a kid and coaching him(and all other players too), so we will see progress. But that will take time and games.

If he(Ronny)could do that in a week he’d be at an EPL club getting and spending Squillions.

  3. If i was being cynical the war on IS is more to do

with next years general election than it has to do

    with defeating terrorism.

And the Labour party’s support of the Tories is nothing more

than trying to show who can pee higher against the wall.

  4. Sipsini

Now I never seen any of Wed’s game, but find it interesting another striker ( stokes) have been moved wide left

How aboot playing a left sided midfielder :-)

    Hail Hail

  5. Just caught up with news, at war again, the bombing begins.

Doped keeps springing to my mind as the money boys look after their own interests again…

  6. Just in

    Good crack on here tonight

    Fitba talk who’d a thunk it :))))

Start Tonev on the right tomorrow

Tet, I’m sorry I forgot it was you who posted about Middlesborough improving. I should have remembered as you have mentioned your boro pal in posts.

I have seen stuff from their games this season and they are very impressive. Leadbitter has scored about seven goals, a few absolute screamers, already and he’s a midfielder.

They gave Liverpool a fright on Wednesday.

As I posted earlier, was the Boro manager in our list of candidates?

I want Ronny to succeed but would prefer him to introduce a slow progressive change, and learning from mistakes would help that and increase the backing he gets.

  8. Leftclicktic

It does my head in that Ronny persists on playing players on the wing of their non preferred foot.

However, he brought on Tonev, a right footer, on the right hand side on Wednesday night.

First two occasions that he got the ball he cut inside onto his left foot!!!

    Gggggrrrrrr :-)

  9. Lennybhoy

No, actually off for 3 weeks from next Thurs :-) hence need to check diary, I only start back on 23 rd

    ‘NFL going to newcastle…..’

    ####

    Hope not.

Heard if he gets the Fulham job we’ll be looking for a new captain.

  11. HT, did WGS not do the very same thing, playing left footers on the right?

I think the idea is the give two options, the FB can move wide and cross with the preferred foot, or the winger can move inside.

That’s not an indorsment, just trying to understand what he’s doing.

  12. Doc

    He did.

The problem I have is that Ronny has said that he likes playing wingers who put crosses into the box.

Playing ‘wrong footed’ players on their non preferred wing doesn’t make sense if that’s the case.

  13. Pog

Has your lad signed for Dundee Utd?

My Godson/nephew has been with them for a year now.

A Clydebank Tim who loves it up there.

  14. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Doc, Gordon did that with Shaun and Naka, in his first season.

It worked better as the above players were better than what we have today.

It was the one season where Shaun wasn’t injured as much and showed the ability that Henke & Lubo were predicting when he broke through.

Paul Telfer helped Naka immensely by making loads of overlapping runs taking a defender away to help Naka cut in and use that wonderful left foot.

The posts in support of Paul Telfer the other night were great. Never the best of players but a great team mate who worked for the team especially Naka.

  15. I also liked what I saw of Scepovics movement when playing on the shoulder of the last man, when his team mates notice it I think he will score plenty for us.

Unless they are playing under instruction not to play the ball over the top to him, and to one two it all the way into the net, sometimes we just take an extra touch when the pass is on.

    This manager lark is easyCSC.

    We’ll see

    Good night all

May only good things come your way.

  16. Wits

All the Fisk books are great , pity the nation about Lebanon is first class

He has a soft spot for your hometown as his father was sent there after the rising instead of the Somme

  17. HT, it might if that strategy gives you two possible angles from which to cross from, in and out swinging(winger and FB)

Again, not arguing it’s correct, but there is potential in that.

Another thing, our midfield in light, accepted.

Is that because we are trying to get players into wide areas and play there rather that in or through the middle?

    Back in a bit.

  18. Whichever formation RD eventually decides upon

    it needs to involve pace.

We passed Motherwell to death last week but it was so

pedestrian Madge from Benidorm wouldn’t have looked out of place

    in the midfied.

  19. Doc,

    There in lies a problem

How often does Efe have to overlap McGregor, into a decent position, but doesn’t get the ball, as McGregor cannot play him in ?

Unless young McGregor is getting that instruction ?

I think we are over complicating a simple game

    Hail Hail

  20. Cowiebhoy

    Got it bud

    Thank you

was trying to move into your seat with a few on here :))))))

    Lennybhoy

    thank you for everything.

  21. Phyllis Dietrichson on

Nice to read of all the oldies on here who remembered John Divers – guys like him and Cushley, Kennedy and Young wore the jerseys with pride just before the golden era, but no-one will ever doubt their dedication to that jersey. I’ve got a particular liking for Cushley because when Jock first came in he knew that you needed to “compete” with the deid team, and JC tended towards the robust rather than the cultured.

Talking of oldies, I was mildly amused to see suggestions that older people voted No in the referendum, so maybe if we hold it again in 10 years time they will all have died off. Reminds me of my grandma when we brought in decimalisation in 1972 – she said “why didn’t they wait till all us old people died.”

    Hail Hail.

To be fair to Stokesie he was excellent the other night. Linked really well with izzie. Passed thoughtfully to fellow attackers. And worked hard to win the ball back.

I was pinching myself. But hey, enough of my peccadilloes!
