Contrast between SPFL and EFL will benefit Scottish clubs

879

Earlier this month we discussed the English Football League, where Championship clubs are in particular danger.  Unlike the SPFL there is little leadership from “the centre”.  Clubs and the League hope to complete the season and only yesterday published a plan on what to do in the event that is not possible.

Completing the season will require investment in blanket testing which will cost hard-up clubs millions of pounds, players would need to be taken off furlough (where applicable) weeks before games are played, and there will be zero ticket money generated.

All this helps clubs, fans and everyone else feel better about the sporting integrity of their competitions, but it will only compound the financial crisis afflicting the sport if they undertake the process and, as is very possible, some or all clubs need to isolate due to positive tests.  This could lead to a later curtailment of the league, with unnecessary illness (or worse) and cost.

The contrast with the SPFL is stark.  The Scottish League took medical and legal advice and went on the front foot with a strong recommendation to clubs, which was overwhelmingly supported.  These decisions are horrible and inevitably unfair on someone, but good leadership means you need to make yourself unpopular at times.

What happens with the English Premiership is largely immaterial to Scottish football.  Our more immediate competitors occupy the leagues below.  This is where Scottish clubs have lost most of their talent to.  There will be opportunities for Scottish clubs as a consequence of how the two leagues reacted to the crisis.  Keep your eye on what happens here.

    So Mr Cummings was worried about his eyesight and therefore his fitness to drive. Fair enough, who could argue with that?

    An Tearmann

    There are a few on here more critical of the Celtic Board than me but not many. Thing is it is usually about things which we have control over. Providing data to, PoliceScotland, away ticket allocations, or changing the footprint around Celtic Park to accommodate an away support whilst increasing the risk to our own fans, those kind of things. Has confidentiality led to a situation where Resolution 12 was a dead end before it even got proposed, or tabled back in 2013? The 5WA was the product of the SPL, whatever role we played or didn’t play, we were not one of the 5.

    ==================

    If you were to look back over the years, when folk aired suspicions that Celtic had signed or were involved in the 5 Way Agreement I made the same point as you that the SPL were the signatories to the 5 Way so no evidence of Celtic’s involvement. No evidence does not mean they were not involved, it just meant there was no evidence of involvement.

    However the SPL acted on the behalf of all the SPL clubs in 2012 ALL of them.

    It is the way the SPL do their business to let the clubs do theirs ie pull all relevant considerations together, seek views consider solutions, draft them out and in this case put that draft to the SPL Board who were elected by ALL the clubs to do what the clubs couldn’t, which was oversee the administration of SPL business.

    So when the final draft is ready it goes to the SPL Board Members to approve on behalf of all clubs.

    When evidence turns up that the 5 way final draft was sent to SPL Board member including Celtic Director Eric Riley as well as Peter Lawwell for acceptance, which is given by default if no comment or objections received by next day then the SPL are signing the 5 Way on behalf of Celtic as well as the other member clubs of the SPL.

    It was on this basis that I had to change from the “not a party to” point of view, which I had taken, to a new evidenced one.

    I didn’t like it but I could not pretend that Celtic had no involvement in the 5 Way Agreement because I didn’t like the consequences of knowing they had, even if that involvement meant not opening the attachment which is stretching plausibility beyond breaking point.

    What that means is a different story and Celtic can defend their involvement, but they cannot stand in front of the next AGM and say they never had any or a wee boy did it and ran away.

  14. I read the book “Brexit All Out War by Tim Shipman , but have still a quarter to go because the more I read the angrier I got at Cummings and had to put it down – lots.

    I view him and Johnson as malevolent.

    When part of the Brexit campaign is to rubbish expert evidence, science if you will, in order to win Brexit and take back control and up turns CoVid 19, where Cummings and Johnson have to depend on expert evidence/science in order to try to take back control they never ever had AND caught the virus, don’t tell me Karma doesn’t have a sense of humor and detests malevolence.

    They will be gone by Christmas if not sooner. Control has been taken from them and their media mogul backers by reality.

    July 27 2012 – Relevant members have until 10.00 am to respond or be counted in favour

    July 29 2012 – Brechin City versus Rangers FC (Scottish Challenge Cup)

    That’s what’s it’s all about….

    ——————–

    Not quite all but a valid point.

    On 29 July The Rangers FC Ltd had to play Brechin as a conditional member of the SFA because they couldn’t play without some form of SFA Membership, so SFA made one up.

    The transfer of full SFA Membership did not happen until 3 August so they had a bit more time because they made it by creating a new kind of SFA Membership to allow that game.

    The late Paul McConville said such a membership was “ultra vires” but observing the rules was the last thing they wanted.

  19. CANAMALAR IT LOOKS LIKE OCD OBSESSION on 25TH MAY 2020 11:12 AM

    Auldheid,

    I can only conclude they used the information we provided, to assist the SFA in developing their strategy against us and that the company secretary was not as he claimed, playing devils advocate but actively working against us to frustrate, in the hope we would give up.

    It sure looks like it now. i know you were rightly suspicious at the time but I wanted more certainty. Must have been the same pain in the butt to you as you were to me back then. Glad to see you post we were wondering if all ok with you

    As company secretary he was apparently misleading us as shareholders every time he raised the issue of provenance especially when we reminded him on many occasions that provenance was not an issue for the CFCB who had the power to investigate all sources of information.

    Oh yes. What a pain that was. BRTH explained over weekend what provenance was and why it stopped us using material but your point above is a telling one. Talk about resistance

    The most telling sign was when he became aggressive with me, when I raised the issue of misinformation we had received at previous meetings, when I asked if we could rely on anything we had been told. This was a guy who told us we were all on the same side.

    Remember I stormed out when he defended his boss? :) :)

    And, in our final meeting with him and PL, when asked by PL what else can we do? I told him follow through with the resolution and ask the CFCB to investigate. PL balked, and the company secretary came in with his usual drivel about provenance and how “HE” needed to be convinced of the provenance. Note, not the SFA and not UEFA but the company secretary.

    As I recall he said we would not like it if they were going through our dustbin or words similar. I thought aye but they would unlike us.

  22. Canalamar Cont

    It was only the company secretary who liased with the SFA on all res12 business. It was the company secretary who was the only party to the meetings who failed to complete agreed actions. And it was the company secretary who failed to meet agreed time constraints.

    To be fair some of the delay was on our side as but he certainly was in no rush, especially right after charges of non compliance were made and I wanted answers, which we never got.

    =============

    So while the discussion regarding a legal challenge against the SFA is all well and good, we need to remember the Celtic company secretary and the executive will be supporting the SFA as they have against Res 12 and this is where our main problem will be. They will be actively working to silence any debate again as they successfully done against the resolution.

    Well it looks as if the media have been nobbled for a start although I have challenged a couple on their reporting of the SFA view. (they are part of the problem too)

    =============

    I suggest BRTHs initial idea of getting the opinion of Queens Council to evaluate is any such course of action feasible and as we were warned, that is a very costly exercise.

    As he said, it may be that a favorable queens council opinion is enough to tip the SFA and all football executives opinions on the importance of small shareholders, when we might gain the power to upset their gravy train. However, I suspect to be assured of change the opinion would have to be tested in court since executives are expert as we have seen, in duplicity therefore most likely portray all the signs of change while nothing actually changes.

    =================

    I’m beginning to think its time we stopped being professional. E mail me.

    So if we look at it using his words then maybe PL was not the final decision maker, maybe it was MN the company secretary ?

    The idea of adjournment came from him so either he was told its your idea make sure it goes nowhere or he decided that on his own.
