Contrast between SPFL and EFL will benefit Scottish clubs

Earlier this month we discussed the English Football League, where Championship clubs are in particular danger.  Unlike the SPFL there is little leadership from “the centre”.  Clubs and the League hope to complete the season and only yesterday published a plan on what to do in the event that is not possible.

Completing the season will require investment in blanket testing which will cost hard-up clubs millions of pounds, players would need to be taken off furlough (where applicable) weeks before games are played, and there will be zero ticket money generated.

All this helps clubs, fans and everyone else feel better about the sporting integrity of their competitions, but it will only compound the financial crisis afflicting the sport if they undertake the process and, as is very possible, some or all clubs need to isolate due to positive tests.  This could lead to a later curtailment of the league, with unnecessary illness (or worse) and cost.

The contrast with the SPFL is stark.  The Scottish League took medical and legal advice and went on the front foot with a strong recommendation to clubs, which was overwhelmingly supported.  These decisions are horrible and inevitably unfair on someone, but good leadership means you need to make yourself unpopular at times.

What happens with the English Premiership is largely immaterial to Scottish football.  Our more immediate competitors occupy the leagues below.  This is where Scottish clubs have lost most of their talent to.  There will be opportunities for Scottish clubs as a consequence of how the two leagues reacted to the crisis.  Keep your eye on what happens here.

    There ‘s a helluva job on to make a good go of this ‘close season’ and improve the squad. We have a once in a lifetime season next year; we have a once in a lifetime crisis. We have an unstable financial environment, a community with some members who would break the rules given half the chance. After disastrous windows like poor willow flood and not buying anyone when oldco were banned from purchasing players, we have come on leaps and bounds in terms of establishing a conveyor belt of quality into the club – with duds aswell, I know! We’re going to have to use all our nous this summer – stick to ‘no one screws us over’ policy, stick to ‘any team can have a good season so we better be much better than the rest’; ‘don’t recruit big names all the time – they’re often shite and costly’; ‘don’t panic’; stick to ‘ building for the future’ and the hardest one – ‘don’t rock the boat, we’re doing something right’.

    Not sure if you can answer the following questions … not even sure if I know how to ask them LOL

     

     

    If I understood you correctly , on Thursday you suggested that we should consider the following before deciding on court action :-

     

     

    • What do we want to ask the court to do

     

    • Consider the consequences if we lose

     

    • Consider the consequences if we win

     

    • Look at the cost , win or lose and finally assess your chances of winning

     

    • Consider the position of the other side and whether their case is stronger

     

    • NEVER overestimate your own case or look for the law the way you want it to be : look for it as it is not as you would like it to be

     

     

    My questions are as follows :-

     

     

    1. Are there plans to assess the merits of our case based on the model you described ?

     

    2. Do you believe that the SFA went through a similar process (to the one outlined above) before deciding not to pursue the UEFA license case against Sevco . By this i mean do you think they considered the merits of a possible subsequent court action raised by Celtic shareholders ?

     

    3. If yes to 2 above , do you believe that they are confidant of an outcome in their favour or are they cacking themselves at the prospect of a court action .

     

     

    PS I recognise that you may not be on CQN regularly so will repeat this post periodically

    Paddy Roberts was a tricky crowd-pleasing winger who threatened to achieve the potential of his early £13m transfer fee with us. In the 3 seasons he had, he made 11, 32 and 12 SPL appearances scoring 6,9 and 0 goals respectively. His creativity, best measured by assists, were 1, 14 and 4. Apart from that one season of 16/17, he never threatened James’s hold on the jersey.

     

     

    Even in that one season James had 28 appearances, 6 goals and 7 assists. Paddy came close, for one season, to grabbing that jersey. In all our 9iar seasons, James has managed a minimum of 15 starts, a maximum of 35 and an average of 24.6 starts. In his 3 seasons Paddy’s average is 18.

     

     

    It was not injury that saw James win this battle, both had injury spells, but form. I am afraid that Paddy’s form since that one season three years ago has shown this to be the case. I hope he finds his way back to his early promise but James is already at that level
