CQN 11 Knocking it out the park

1030

Where to start on last night’s CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner?  We knocked it out the park.  Hundreds came, thousands of pounds were raised, enough to help Mary’s Meals build a kitchen for a thousand more school kids in Malawi, and a £5,000 donation to Lisa Hague’s 30k Challenge for Marie Curie Challenge for Cancer Care.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came along and made the night so special, especially those who stepped forward and helped Mary’s Meals and Lisa’s Challenge.  The night could not have happened without Phil Agnew’s experience, work and charm.  He is a credit to everything good about the Celtic support.

Special thanks to Tom Boyd, John Hughes, Joe Miller and Tommy Coyne, who added range to the night at the Q&A session.  Thanks to Stuart Armstrong, who dropped in to spend an hour with us, and share some of his undisguised joy at being a Celtic player.

Archie Macpherson spoke about the world Jock Stein blew apart when he arrived at Celtic 50 years ago this week.  Archie’s range on Scottish football is peerless.  He became a friend and confidant of Jock, and gave us an insight into the extraordinary man.

No St Patrick’s Night would be complete without great music and for that our thanks to Patricia Ferns and Liam McGrandles, and a special mention those who put their shoulder to the wheel on the night, especially Geo from Biglens and the great hospitality staff at Celtic.

I’ve many people to catch up with but I’m planning to sleep for the next several days.  Cup Final apart.

If all weekends were like this weekend………
If all gatherings were like Celtic gatherings……….

  2. Re the suggestion about doing a CQN party in Dublin.

I went to the Association of Irish Celtic Supporters Club dinner last June with big Yogi.

It was in a large hotel just outside of Dublin and there must have been 600 supporters there representing supporters clubs from all over Ireland. A brilliant night. The event has attracted even higher numbers previously – the effects of the recession, the changes in kick off times, the impact of blanket coverage of English games on TV are all having an impact.

They were genuinely delighted that we went over last year and we could perhaps do something with AICSC for 2015? Just a thought…

Stolen Child. Wow. À huge favourite of mine. Perfect Ayrshire poetry fae Mike Scott.

  5. If we can lose at home to St. Johnstone, we can lose in Hampden to Dundee United.

Yes of course we should win but they won’t lie down, our Bhoys need to make it happen. An early goal and we should win easy but if the game drags on without a goal its squeaky bum time. Any word on Biton?.

  6. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

You are spot on, it’s a cup final and our recent appearances there are enough to warrant caution.

Having wrote that I’m always optimistic (bordering on expect) the Celtic to win.

Will hopefully be over at Parkhead to see the players show the prize off too.

  7. I know its an old cliche but complacency is our biggest threat tomorrow. Well that and the pitch and the referee.

  8. Awe naw,

    Beans and gone…

I’ll check the blog tomorrow if anyone is wanting the spare ticket, I’ll be going to the international at twelve, kip time, work tomorrow, a mibee in for Monday, if we win it’s a deffo.

No doubt. Complacency is a constant devil on the shoulder.

To me, Ronny and JC are showing really encouraging signs. We’re faster and fitter than before and in the last 3 months are creating more chances per game than any team since MON / henrik era. Undoubtedly we need to take more of these chances.

Next year, I can’t see van dijk, denayer, forrest, stokes, guidetti being the first 11. Unlike last summer ronny will be in full control of recruitment.

Bumps in the road there may be but we don’t walk alone .

He will get this right ..,.

  10. An old Dublin ballad to get ye thinking of CQN12.

‘Twas down by Anna Liffey my love and I did stray

Where in the good ol’ slushy mud the seagulls sport and played

We got the whiff of fish and chips and Mary softly sighed

Arah! John won’t you come for a one-and-one down by the Liffey-side

Then up along by George’s Street the loving pair did view

And Mary swanked it like a queen in a skirt of navy blue

Her hat was lately turned and her blouse was newly dyed

Sure you couldn’t beat her amber locks, down by the Liffey-side

And on her old melodian how sweetly she did play

She played “Goodbye and Do Not Sigh” and “Down by Texas Way”

And when she turned Sinn Feiner, I nearly burst with pride

For to hear her play the Soldier’s Song, down by the Liffey-side

On Sunday morning to Meath Street, together we would go

And up to Father Murphy where we both would take our vows

He’ll join our hands in wedlock bands and soon we’ll be outside

For a whole afternoon on our honeymoon, down by the Liffey-side

And we’ll have little children and rear them neat and plain

To shout, “Up the Republic!” and to talk about Sinn Fein

To emulate their old fella, whose England’s Laws defied,

and to turn their guns against the Saxon Huns, down by the Liffey-side.

Mothers day tomorrow. I have loads of great memories of my marvellous mother but two Celtic ones spring to mind. The first was the famous encounter with our then parish priest who had foolishly compared the crowds turning on Christ with the Celtic fans turning on Macca ,who was working his way out of us.This most Catholic of women never missed him and to be fair he always had a soft spot for her after it.”Here comes the Macca fan” was her greeting. Second was her disappointment after a visit to the doctors when she had been asked ” do you think sitting in cold football stadiums is really helping your situation” the moment she knew her season ticket was going.Love you always.

  13. was at the game when gc did his half time show guy behind me says wonder if he can play fitba. rest is history.

look bhoys lets not get carried away, bitton will never, never be a player like gc.

  14. Evening all.

If Ronny wants to stick a finger up at The Sun, he should invite five of their “finest” hacks to attend an afternoon training session with the team.

They start by spending an hour or so knocking back 4 or 5 pints and a kebab. Then after a half hour of gentle warming up they do an hour of full-on training, then finish with an hour long hacks v players 5-a-side game.

Then, after giving the dead on their feet vomiting journos a complete pasting, Ronny can send them on their way with an invitation to pen a piece on how detrimental a kebab and a few jars is to the performance of elite athletes.

And they can stick that on their front page.

  15. Looking forward to game tomorrow.

With only two wins in our last six games, we shouldn’t underestimate Dundee Utd.

I didn’t see us losing to Kilmarnock a few years back, do it is important the fans inspire the team, and team inspire the fans.

My team ( assuming they are fit & Mikel / Charlie aren’t fit), would be

    Craig

    Adam Jason VVD Efe

    Broony Nir

    Kris Joe Hansen Forrest

    Griff

Reality is, I expect RD to put in Stokes before Forrest, and if Bitton isn’t fit, we will see Joe Hansen drop into middle.

  16. For those asking TET is fine.

    Bad line.

    Sumfin about campanology and terminals.

  17. Was watching one of these stupid cookery programme this morning when the celebrity Brit Cook said this dish can be served with a Glasgow salad, meaning a plate of chips. Between Glasgow salads, and Glasgow goodbyes, I was wondering are there any more of these sayings, do Glaswegians just laugh at them or do some find them offensive.
