CQN TV on Celtic, Champions League and G.o.D.

466

This is our second CQN TV stint where Glasgow’s hottest model and TV presenter Nicole and social media masters’ student, Suzie, ask me about the season ahead Celtic and our Champions League chances.  I also get a great question about the Generation of Domination, which I’ve not written much about here recently, but you’d better believe it’s coming.

It was great fun talking about Our Celtic, hope you enjoy it.

  1. Sevco Scotland Ltd’s application should not be even considered until they can verify that they are a viable entity.

That is the whole point of the rules.

We don’t want financial liabilities in the game, especially not very large ones.

Given the utter shambles that has ensued from RFC(ia)’s demise, the administrators should be especially vigilant in ensuring that applicants are viable business entities. Breaking every rule in the book is not only selling out every association member, need I remind you that Sevco Scotland Ltd isn’t a member, but is actually increasing the likelihood that we will be right back in this same mess again very, very soon.

No, our associations should be insisting that the new applicant has verifiable evidence that their business is not going to experience another administration event. And that evidence should be thoroughly investigated to ensure that we are not being ‘duped’.

Given the array of liabilities associated with the aftermath of the “Great Demise”, can CG provide such guarantees? His rather brief history is not exactly aglow with financial wizardry. Indeed, any sensible businessman considering going into partnership with CG would take one look at walk away.

  3. Morning,

Hibs fans telling it like it is.

“We believe that the new Rangers – if they

    can satisfy the usual

    standards demanded for SFA membership

    – should start in the

    Third Division.

“We welcomed the “no” vote passed by the

SPL clubs, including our own club, but we

have watched with dismay as the SPL clubs

have stood silently on the sidelines as their

own chief executive – with the help and

approval of a now entirely discredited SFA – has tried to bully and threaten lower

    division clubs into submission.

“Not only do we find the tactics used by Neil

Doncaster and Stewart Regan abhorrent, we

also take issue with the doomsday scenarios

they have offered as evidence. “While television money and corporate

sponsorship are undoubtedly important we do not believe that all of them would vanish if the Rangers newco was not guaranteed a

place in the SPL within 12 months.

“This, however, is an issue that should go

    beyond finances.

“It is essential that Hibernian – like all clubs – are part of a fair and equitable league

structure with governing bodies that are consistent and reasonable in their treatment of all clubs.

“We do not believe that is currently the case

and we would call on all SPL clubs – including our own – to address the damage being done to the game by Neil Doncaster and Stewart Regan.”

Hibs would also like UEFA and FIFA to take

notice of what is going on in Scottish football.

The fans’ statement added: “We would also

hope that the European and global footballing authorities are watching these

developments with interest and will move to censure the Scottish governing bodies.”

They also stated it was a disgrace rangers were being allowed to pursue players while having football debt.

Exactly, have the SFA published the details that confirm the ‘fit and proper’ tests have been passed by Sevco Scotland?

I don’t believe they have and without this particular detail it would be absolute folly to vote on their inclusion in the SFL.

Debt-free Celtic attracted fund manager investment

THE City fund manager whose firm is the biggest institutional investor in Celtic Football Club said he would never have invested in the club if it had Rangers-style debt levels.

Nick Train, co-founder of London-based funds boutique Lindsell Train, has spent five years building a 5.2% stake in Celtic’s ordinary shares, and the house has also bought some preference shares issued by the club for its portfolios.

He told The Herald: “We would never have invested in Celtic if it had had the sort of debt one knew was in Rangers.

“We met the management and we understood that the balance sheet was effectively debt-free and the philosophy of the major shareholder Dermot Desmond was to keep it debt free.”

Mr Train has been quietly adding to his portfolio while, on the other side of Glasgow, Rangers has plunged into administration with estimated debts of £134 million.

Former Sheffield United chief executive Charles Green and Zeus Capital have bought the business and assets of Rangers but the club in its new company structure faces a future in the lower league after opposition to its readmission by other Scottish Premier League sides.

Mr Train said of his Celtic investment: “We have made a risky investment. But we have not taken a balance sheet risk as well.”

Lindsell Train took its stake in Celtic, which only constitutes a tiny proportion of the funds he manages, because Mr Train believes the development of new media platforms could massively widen the audience for sports and push up the value of sports franchises.

He noted the recent purchase of the LA Dodgers baseball club for $2 billion (£1.3bn) by a group of investors including legendary former player “Magic” Johnson.

That was the largest transaction yet for a professional sports club.

He also highlighted the £731m takeover of Arsenal football club by American businessman Stan Kroenke and the £300m takeover of Liverpool of Fenway Sports Group.

The valuation of football clubs will come under further scrutiny in the coming weeks after Manchester United revealed plans for a $100m listing in New York. It had previously considered an initial public offering in Hong Kong or Singapore.

Mr Train, whose funds include the £215m Finsbury Growth & Income Trust, suggested that recent deals imply that Celtic is undervalued.

“This is a quite irreplaceable global brand. Celtic is followed worldwide as a result of the diaspora of Scottish people and Irish Catholics.

“There is a very substantial following on the East Coast of the United States.”

“If Fenway is right and Liverpool football club is worth £300m, if Stan Kroenke is right and Arsenal is worth £700m, how can Celtic be worth only £30m?

“It just seems wrong, However, maybe it will never change.”

Celtic already has links with the highest levels of the City by virtue of BT chief executive Ian Livingston’s seat on its board.

Mr Train said: “I have looked at a lot of quoted football clubs. Ninety-nine out of 100 I wouldn’t touch.”

Lindsell Train is now the fourth-largest shareholder in Celtic behind Mr Desmond, an Irish businessman, Christopher Trainer, owner of Glasgow-based advertising company Forrest Group and 6.6% shareholder James Keane, according to Reuters data.

Mr Train specialises in targeting companies that successfully manage brands and has longstanding holdings in companies including AG Barr, which produces Irn-Bru, as well as Johnnie Walker whisky owner Diageo.

He has tipped the technology and media sectors for strong growth in the coming years.

    No room for cheats

    Deluded: Stewart Regan

At the risk of intruding upon private grief, it would seem that demotion to the Scottish Third Division is the very least of the penalties which Rangers should expect for their sustained exercise in financial doping. However, Stewart Regan, the chief executive of the Scottish FA, is trenchantly opposed to such a punishment.

He pleads for the softer option of relegation to the Scottish First Division, apparently on the grounds that Rangers are too big to fail. Indeed, he has issued preposterous warnings of ‘Armageddon’ and ‘social unrest’ if the club should get what they truly deserve. Rangers in the Third Division, warns Mr Regan, would ‘kill the game’ in Scotland.

I suspect he is mistaken, for civilised sanctions will not kill the Scottish game. That task can safely be left to systematic cheats like Rangers. And deluded prattlers like Stewart Regan.

  14. GOOD MORNING FELLOW TIMS

Can I draw your attention to a Kibera Celtic fundraiser this coming Sunday, Sunday July 15th. The venue is the Toll Craines pub in Govan, music is by Eirin go Bragh. It all kicks off at 4PM. The music, I am reliably informed, will go on til 8pm at the earliest (probably a lot later) Cost of ticket is 6 POUNDS. Anyone who wishes to attend can pay at the door.

Please, please support a really worthwhile cause – a cause / link officially endorsed by Glasgow Celtic football club. We are trying to get Victor Wanyama to attend but he is Germany with the squad at the moment so, as things stand, we are not sure if Victor will be able to attend.

There will be a raffle on the day so get along this coming Sunday for a great afternoon in the company of fellow Celtic fans listening to some fine music whilst raising money for a brilliant cause. A cause no doubt is close to the hearts of many Celtic fans.
