Curious Deadline Day

333

Deadline day and Norwich City’s Cork-born striker, Adam Idah, is set to join and reinforce Brendan Rodgers’ striker options.  I also expect a left back, as backup for Greg Taylor, who will retain his place when fit.

At 6’ 3” Idah is 2” taller than Oh and will add heft to the squad, a quantity we discussed was lacking as recently as Monday.  Stephen Kenny gave Adam his first cap for Ireland.  The players biggest moment so far, he scored against the Netherlands in a Euro 2024 qualifier in September.

He is a curious signing for me.  Unlike the recent arrivals of Lagerbielke, Nawrocki, Bernardo, Holm, Palma, Yang, Tilio and Kuhn, Adam was not automatic first choice at his previous club.  None of the others were technically speaking “projects”, they were all being replied upon week-in, week-out, in leagues comparable to or better than Scotland.

Adam has started fewer than half of Norwich City’s league games this season, and has scored six goals from his 12 starts and 16 substitute appearances.  Ross County gave us a lesson in how effective big raw lads can be in Scottish football, and we have also signed a winger who (by all accounts) can cross, so logic dictates we sign a target man.  Let’s hope he arrives and batters a few goals in.

The summer window was one of transition.  Strategy was prepared by a manager who left the building, Brendan chose who he wanted from a short-list already prepared for him (Nat Phillips was an emergency exception).

This window, Brendan has had complete control.  As he made clear at the AGM and on a few occasions since, he signs the players.  He forms strategy and he is responsible for the decisions.  So that’s me reassured.

  1. Turkeyboy – I would say that Idah will not be playing Saturday never mind score a hat trick.

    I wish the bhoy well.

But no hat trick on Saturday.

  2. Rember we want to improve in europe.

    We want quality.

£72 million in bank statement and we will back the manager.

    🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

After 200 projects and a 3rd choice striker all going swimingly.

Now shut up and move along.

Even if we do win the League this year (we better) we have already failed, lost a cup, out of CL out of Europe.

From the top down gut the place.

  3. I can remember travelling over on the boat way back in the 90’s with the, now sadly defunct,Anton Rogan CSC during the original huns 9. One particular Saturday morning I remember Matt McGlone and some other members of Celts for change addressed the assembled travel support about how our club needed change at the top.

There were fighting against a board that had no money, no ideas and no ambition other than keeping themselves comfortable. Matt McGlone actually told us he was not demanding we boycott Celtic as he understood the effort we put in to attend compared to those in the Glasgow area. That day my CSC and all the others on the boat signed a letter calling for the board to go. That was a time when we were lucky to finish third and European football of the embarrassing variety.

Today I read a post on here calling for Celtic to be starved of our money to force the board out. We are living through some of our club’s most successful times ever but somehow we need a Celts for change type campaign again according to some.

    How times have changed.

Before anybody feels the need. Yes I am a back of the bus,old firimist, board apologist, sheep. Or as our host calls it not a bed wetter.

  5. Here’s a question:

Who at the club thinks it’s reasonable to ask for £2m for a player who can’t make it into the first team, and only 6 months left on their contract so able to leave on a free in the summer, while shopping for first team players in the £2m range?

Any source for the 2 million for Turnbull story?

I would have thought 250k-500k would have been more likely.

I know sevco selling price estimates are fuelled by hunflation but surprised by that figure quoted for Turnbull.

  7. Writing in the Daily Mail, McGowan reports:

CELTIC are poised to sell midfielder David Turnbull to Cardiff City in a deal worth £2million.

  8. Transfer window has been piss poor as expected. Board will be patting each other on the back after punting gucci and turnbull to ensure no net spend, impressive stuff 👏 it’s as if they only care about profit margins lol!!!

  9. Marcus Rashford on loan is what a club of our stature should be doing to ensure we win the league and enter the biggest European competition next season.

  10. Gets better.Complaining now we are getting too much transfer fee for Turnbull.

Aaaaarrrrggggghhhh, let me oot. There’s fek all wrang wi me.I shouldnae be in here.

    Turkeybhoy

Hope the two million for turnbull is accurate, but I can’t see it.

  12. Kurzawa, 31, has had limited playing time at PSG this season, with only one league appearance to his name. This has led to his agents making Celtic aware of his availability this January deadline day

  13. As an aside, i am sick hearing about the champions league group being worth 50, 60 and 70 million. It wil be worth around 40 million. The format for the europa league also changes like the c/l so more money for participating clubs, truth is the board are not stupid and realise winning the league is no big game changed one way or another.

The real game changer is 10,000 more seats in our stadium and folk buying the tickets. To maintain the buying of tickets the board needs to show some desire, motivation, direction and leadership that extends beyond simply sevco.

Not every players needs to be a pound on 10 x’s income and the big capital project proposed over the past 10 years I.e. Hotel, museum bard, fanzone etc. has not went beyond drawings on paper which needs to be sorted out as well.

  14. Stephbhoy67

I’m going to regret this but you do realise winning the league and qualifying for the champions league boosts the profit margins an awful lot more than a £2million transfer don’t you?

There is no sensible business case for not spending money on transfers which could strengthen the first team squad to ensure we win the league and enter the champions league directly.

Can you name one player that you know for a fact would join Celtic but the board have refused to sanction the spend?

I would have walked over hot coals to have been able to play for Celtic. However I understand that not everyone feels the same. Celtic can bid for players but sometimes the attraction of a plastic pitch in Kilmarnock on a November Wednesday is not enough to sway a player no matter how much you are prepared to pay for their services.

    Sometimes it’s not a conspiracy.

  15. Timmy 7,

Last season for Fulham, but remember him playing for France and PSG couple of seasons ago in CL.Very good.

  16. Malone Buoy,

Which point am I failing to grasp?

A lot of points uttered on here today ,I would not grasp with your graspers.

    Need to be more specific.

  17. The point about (potentially) £2m for a soon to be bosman Turnbull, but when we look for centre mids we think shopping at the same price bracket is going to buy quality.

The constant gathering of squad fillers is suffocating the team and taking up wages that could go towards quality.

  18. Celtic don’t need to go to the most expensive market in world football to get good players, there are many players who would massively improve our team who are attainable and would come if offered between 30k and 50k a week. Problem is we would much rather spread that wage on 3 squad players. That’s why we have 32 players.

Reality is we should be running with a squad of 22 players max. Around 10 of the squad players should be aged between 24 and 27 at point of purchase to help form the backbone of the team and to help push/ develop the other younger players.

The 1st team squad should then be supplemented by academy players. Guys like lawel, frame, anderson, Kelly, vata etc via an appropriate staged pathway I.e., b team, developmental loan(s) and then first team I good enough. If to good for developmental loan then straight to first team.

Celtic and/ or scottish trained euro quata is not an issue. All academy boys can register and play via b list. 17 players from outside Scotland can be registered. The bulk of our resources should be directed toward getting g those guys in the door

  19. The point my Norwich supporting friends made today about Idah,no one I think really picked up on.They said he gets used as a target man,one up,but Norwich don’t really play that way.Hence his lack of 90 mins.

Both said they quite liked him.Not a ringing endorsement.Who knows.

  20. I fully understand & agree that we should be trying to be the best we can and not just be content to keep ahead of the Hun,

However no harm in keeping tabs on what they are doing.

Am I correct in thinking that so far this window despite dozens of stars jetting in they have only announced 2 signings Silva (Loan) & Diomande or am I missing a couple.
