Curious Deadline Day

333

Deadline day and Norwich City’s Cork-born striker, Adam Idah, is set to join and reinforce Brendan Rodgers’ striker options.  I also expect a left back, as backup for Greg Taylor, who will retain his place when fit.

At 6’ 3” Idah is 2” taller than Oh and will add heft to the squad, a quantity we discussed was lacking as recently as Monday.  Stephen Kenny gave Adam his first cap for Ireland.  The players biggest moment so far, he scored against the Netherlands in a Euro 2024 qualifier in September.

He is a curious signing for me.  Unlike the recent arrivals of Lagerbielke, Nawrocki, Bernardo, Holm, Palma, Yang, Tilio and Kuhn, Adam was not automatic first choice at his previous club.  None of the others were technically speaking “projects”, they were all being replied upon week-in, week-out, in leagues comparable to or better than Scotland.

Adam has started fewer than half of Norwich City’s league games this season, and has scored six goals from his 12 starts and 16 substitute appearances.  Ross County gave us a lesson in how effective big raw lads can be in Scottish football, and we have also signed a winger who (by all accounts) can cross, so logic dictates we sign a target man.  Let’s hope he arrives and batters a few goals in.

The summer window was one of transition.  Strategy was prepared by a manager who left the building, Brendan chose who he wanted from a short-list already prepared for him (Nat Phillips was an emergency exception).

This window, Brendan has had complete control.  As he made clear at the AGM and on a few occasions since, he signs the players.  He forms strategy and he is responsible for the decisions.  So that’s me reassured.

  1. It’s just bizarre how Strachan’s and Lawwell’s sons are employed as Senior UK and Europe Scout and Head of Scouting and Recruitment respectively and P67 trains his guns on our most successful manager since Stein when transfers go awry.

  2. 35 of his 49 Championship outings have come as a substitute. Only in 15 has he been on the pitch for longer than 45 minutes. For 14 of those games, the same number as he’s started, Idah has been on the pitch for fewer than 15 minutes.

  3. “This window, Brendan has had complete control”

Does that include setting the available budget as otherwise…..ach, it’s so obvious, it doesn’t need said.

  4. Why would Desmond not be doing what he likes today….don’t think I’ve ever read such psh in my life ….who cares ffs …..utter utter media led nonsense….some clowns will fall for it

  5. Look at how successful we have been these last 20 years. (Board defence).

Look at what happened to our biggest and more successful domestic rival ( in 2012*) – that entity disappeared, never to return. We need to consider our success in that very light.

The administration and then Liquidation of Rangers, leading to the formation of a new club in 2012 all but guaranteed league title after league title. I did not get very excited about winning those early -post Rangers- titles, it was inevitable. Did we win enough trebles during that post 2012 4 / 5 year period – no we did not. (I accept that cup games can be won or lost on the bounce of a ball or suddenly blind officials). The quadruple treble was astounding and delicious of course and a truly memorable time for all of us. But overall perspective is required in respect of our success.

This season we have blown a commanding points league and the title can now go either way – the gap has been narrowed. So forgive me for wanting the complacent old men on our board to spend some cash on non project players to ensure that we win the league this year.

*achieved with cheating of course (and not just HMRC)

  6. Hopefully Idah can fill a hole that’s been there since GG left – bhoy were we spoiled by him – nearly guaranteed to get a goal coming on as a sub (except for the dire pen against livi).

The hole we can’t fill is hatate’s injury – no hatate and organised teams know they have a chance.

  7. Go tell the Spartim on

A Dun, there are two other of Lawwells children who either work for Celtic or have a contract to deliver things for Celtic (as I said in another topic, who wouldn’t employ their kids) .

Upon reflection, AN TERMANN is correct.

Please accept my apologies for my cheap and unfunny manipulation of your moniker earlier today. I was out of order.

    Hail Hail.

All this talk of Lawwell nepotism reminds me of a Blackadder the Third episode featuring Pitt the Even Younger, Sod Off Baldrick and Colin the dog.

  10. Burnely78,

Lawwell/Lawwell didn’t deliver the quality the manager asked for.

They will have the litany off excuses we have heard from one or two others.

Did they deliberately fail to spite Rodgers or just incompetence. Based on Mark Lawwells track record its incompetence ( last 2 windows and no track record). Of course Lawwell senior will be laughing his head off at more dross shovelled Rodger’s way.

Similar to last time he will briefing behind the managers back —- Paul67 attempt was just the start.

Current team is a poor imitation off last years team and Sevco cannot believe their luck courtesy off the Lawwell’s (however they should not be too surprised as he helped them with the 5WA).

Lawwell/Lawwell have seriously handicapped the club in this years league title race.

  11. B78-I would fancy our recruitment guy won’t hang around after this window given we have reverted to 11th hour spiv trading. He could walk into a bigger job

So you think Mark Lawwell will walk into another Head Scout job? On a Playstation game maybe? Ratcliffe is cleaning out Man U, he will be on the phone shortly, it’s clear you’re trolling on here.

And for about the 6th time,Ange and the Boy Wonder ‘worked together ‘ previously, where and when?

Apology accepted, was surprised by your comment,

Oh by the way have another look at my moniker 😜👍 HH

I found myself issuing an apology just the other day. Unfortunately my apology was not acknowledged allowing the episode to fester somewhat and actually encouraged another poster to add his tuppence worth to my initial comment

It takes a big man to apologize, and a bigger man to accept

    Well done sir

  14. If we sign the young guy from Norwich I hope he is a success and inspires us onto the double. Go score some goals.

  15. Dermot Desmond doesn’t care we do that’s the difference with our club and it would take some pain for us to take back control.

  16. Good luck to the new guy but I have no idea who the heck he is. Hopefully he can take penalties without having two or more tries.

  17. onenightinlisbon on

Looking forward to the manager’s press conference on Friday where he takes full responsibility for the January transfer window and states quite clearly he is more than happy with all of his own hard work….

  18. If the side fail this season the only answer is the faithful fan base withhold funds unlike the season after the failed 10iar season when we paid for a season card etc and were given a free stream of pain.

  19. Malone…

Take yir pick from Willow window or McGinn windy we are not run as a progressive or proactive football club and history past and present proves that unfortunately.

    Time for a revaluation.

    Fanadpatriot,

I know I have asked you before but are you near Kerrykeel?

Sorry if i am repeating meself

    Thanks

    Sean

  21. Lucky Cody

Utter garbage and this has nothing to do with Lawwell’s of either generation.

The players initially asked for a month ago were there and deals in place.

The manager decided to go for agent offered alternatives.

It’s the managers call. The only change is we are now back to working with a manager with no track record in the transfer market relying on agents and not those working to a company strategic brief.

If these guys suit you and that way of working. Is for you then you should be happy with this window.

  22. Howard on clyde, he could be posting on here, when does the car park protest happen ?

anyone going up to the park to shout at the front door ?

  23. there will be thousands outside Celtic park calling for the boards heads, lol.

    top of the league,
