Curious Deadline Day

333

Deadline day and Norwich City’s Cork-born striker, Adam Idah, is set to join and reinforce Brendan Rodgers’ striker options.  I also expect a left back, as backup for Greg Taylor, who will retain his place when fit.

At 6’ 3” Idah is 2” taller than Oh and will add heft to the squad, a quantity we discussed was lacking as recently as Monday.  Stephen Kenny gave Adam his first cap for Ireland.  The players biggest moment so far, he scored against the Netherlands in a Euro 2024 qualifier in September.

He is a curious signing for me.  Unlike the recent arrivals of Lagerbielke, Nawrocki, Bernardo, Holm, Palma, Yang, Tilio and Kuhn, Adam was not automatic first choice at his previous club.  None of the others were technically speaking “projects”, they were all being replied upon week-in, week-out, in leagues comparable to or better than Scotland.

Adam has started fewer than half of Norwich City’s league games this season, and has scored six goals from his 12 starts and 16 substitute appearances.  Ross County gave us a lesson in how effective big raw lads can be in Scottish football, and we have also signed a winger who (by all accounts) can cross, so logic dictates we sign a target man.  Let’s hope he arrives and batters a few goals in.

The summer window was one of transition.  Strategy was prepared by a manager who left the building, Brendan chose who he wanted from a short-list already prepared for him (Nat Phillips was an emergency exception).

This window, Brendan has had complete control.  As he made clear at the AGM and on a few occasions since, he signs the players.  He forms strategy and he is responsible for the decisions.  So that’s me reassured.

Fanad starts after Kerrykeel ,many a happy day night spent there ,

St Patrick’s day is always a great day in Kerrykeel.

Easter Monday is a special day in Fanad

We never forget our ancestors 🇮🇪

  2. Malone Buoy,

We have a £ 6 million player in Bernardo, playing in our midfield at the moment, with the other 3 ,two of them would cost together £ 50 million,+ Calmac. We have Holm, voted best midfield player in Norway last season, got for a snip.We have very expensive midfield.Or are you complaining we only paid £ 1.5 million for MOR.

Our midfield buys have been fantastic.

  3. Turkeybhoy- you proved last week that you are capable of some funny stuff, saying that you weren’t a Lawwell fan,and you are saying a LB who you might have seen once is excellent? Consistency….

  4. I think we should be going for Virgil van Dijk, at 32 we might get him on a free. He knows the game up here. I also like the idea of Rashford as cover for Kyogo. For left back I suggest Aaron Cresswell and at 34 he is probably also available on a free. Caoimhin Kelleher would be a great back up for Joe Hart and take over as number 1 in the summer.

£15 for Caoimhin Kelleher and £40 for Rashford leaves us with over £15 million in the bank. Think big bhoys. If we want to repeat 1967 we have to sack the board and get in guys who know how to attract top players to our dear old SPL.

  5. Been told a left back will be in Glasgow tomorrow for a medical and signing talks. No name given and no information on whether loan or permanent.

It seems to be that balancing the books is key to the celtic board and stands above all else. We all need to balance the books I get it. However, the truth is celtic is not balancing the books well as is evident by several years of profit in the 10s of millions whilst serving serving up less than they are capable of on the field. In football we as a club are an outlier.

Celtic employ multiple personnel on big wages to be able to identify players. If they can’t do it replace them, you get better folk in. you don’t point the finger at others to explain away your on incompetency. To be fair it may not be thier fault, the club is likely setting certain specifications I.e., cost range, wages, age which impacts on the search.

I know the days of a Sutton, hartson etc are gone but the fact is those guys came to celtic for the money, the grass was not greener, the pitches were not better and the weather has not worsened put simply we offered very good terms and they accepted. If we balance the books so we avoid paying large amounts of tax on profits and redirect that into the playing squad better players will be attainable. Sure we will still get knocked back but the likeihood of signing up better players will improve.

  7. WORTHINGBHOY- thanks, the other guy was obviously waffling and had no link, keep posting mate HH

    maybe Oscar Cortes too…

    BUT

dont forget the incredible bids they turned down for Butland and Dessers

the players they didnt sign but might sign in the summer

the fact that guys like Sima, Lawrence and Danilo are long term injured.

the fact that cifuentes and yilmaz want oot

(cifuentes wa hailed as the most talented player that Chiellini had ever played with !)

they have around 5 players in the last years of their contract.

all the other players who were linked

  10. they will sign shankland – van veen to hearts and we miss out on miovski – advantage Rangers (given CCV , Hatate and goalscoring ability).

Celtic have 24hrs to change the psychological impact of this window

  11. Stebhoy

Do you think we will win the league? I do

No faff, simple yes or no will suffice

By psychological impact do speak for yourself.

Or give the names of players who would stop you going into psychological paralysis, what would calm you?

“Even if we do win the League this year …. we have already failed”

    Someone actually posted this earlier.

  13. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

“Hello, I’d like you to support our attempts to oust the board of a football club”

“Ok. Why do you want to oust them? Does the club lose money every year”

    “No”

    “Do they ever win anything?”

“Well, they average two domestic trophies a year over the last twelve years”

“How many domestic trophies could they win each year?”

    “Three”

“And, they average two over a long period?”

    “Yes”

“Have they ever won three in one year?”

    “Yes”

    “Recently?”

“Yes. Five times in seven years”.

“So, it’s a combined effort, definitely not just the board, but if the club makes money and wins stuff – why do you want to oust the board?”

    “Lots of reasons”

    “Name a few?”

    “Ok ….

Chairman’s son works for the club

Biggest shareholder plays a lot of golf and doesn’t splash millions on the club

Club is a “laughing stock”, “a disgrace”, “a joke”, “is being destroyed”

“Oh … and the R@ngers are comin’ and am terrified”

“Even if we do win the league this season we will still have failed”

“If we lose the league I won’t be back”

  14. AN TEARMANN on 1ST FEBRUARY 2024 12:38 AM

    Tillio loaned back to Melbourne.

*didn’t we do that with Tom Rogic the “Wizard of Oz”

  15. AT – fair question. Once the pressure kicks in, I don’t think we have the players to win the league. Caveat – if we lose CCV and Hatate for a while.

Adam Idah is a gamble – he’s potential but may explode or implode.

We’ve not yet signed for our weeks position – left back (defensively poor)

We’ve got to be flawless since they will get the decisions as we know – I dont see it since we ‘ve already dropped points when we had 1-2 key players out.

Its too close to call and thats my issue – with 70m in the bank we should be singing 2-3 experienced/quality players to kick us forward and give the whole club a lift from the recent negativity. Rodgers wanted it and most fans too. Just my concerns – doesn’t mean I won’t support the team 100%

  16. Good morning all from a very mild 4 degrees Garngad and dry at the moment.

So we wait to the last 3 days before the window closes and get Idah 3rd choice at Norwich and are linked with a 31 year old LB, (31 that does not fit our model) but the important thing here is we are scrambling around taking what’s left on the shelf and some on here think it’s great business get a grip.

Some people really are a feckin joke.

If we really wanted these guys we could have got them on the 1st day of the window opening and they would be up to speed and ready to Play now.

    Honestly…..

    D. :)

  17. B2B – Yes I did post that but the context is not as simple as that 1 line.

Each year we must set goals and surely the top goal is to improve on the previous year as a club and we have failed these goals already.

There I have made it more simple for you.

Is that so hard to understand?

Oh and who said they won’t be back?

    D. :)

  18. Did somebody say Rashford? He’s on nearly £400,000 and will want to play in one of the top 5 leagues before the Euros. I mean why stop there? Why not show “ambition” and ask Mbappe the question?

    Let’s be sensible folks.

  19. STEBHOY

“Potential” at this stage would be bad enough but until the end of the season just seems pointless.

I’ve got a feeling that apart from a few late appearances off the bench, we won’t see much of him. Hope I’m wrong.

  20. David66

One of the reasons for last minute deals is that the player is waiting for the best deal – could be financial, standard of league or likelihood of playing.

Let’s face it playing in the Spfl isn’t that attractive.

  21. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

No it’s not. We have been slow to cut our loses and as a result our squad is top heavy with mediocrity.

For me, who goes out today is as important as who comes in.

  22. If you read the background, the actual signing of Marco Tilio is curious and more curious.

I am all for cutting our bloated squad, but his initial signing and our recruitment must be questioned.
