Curious Deadline Day

333

Deadline day and Norwich City’s Cork-born striker, Adam Idah, is set to join and reinforce Brendan Rodgers’ striker options.  I also expect a left back, as backup for Greg Taylor, who will retain his place when fit.

At 6’ 3” Idah is 2” taller than Oh and will add heft to the squad, a quantity we discussed was lacking as recently as Monday.  Stephen Kenny gave Adam his first cap for Ireland.  The players biggest moment so far, he scored against the Netherlands in a Euro 2024 qualifier in September.

He is a curious signing for me.  Unlike the recent arrivals of Lagerbielke, Nawrocki, Bernardo, Holm, Palma, Yang, Tilio and Kuhn, Adam was not automatic first choice at his previous club.  None of the others were technically speaking “projects”, they were all being replied upon week-in, week-out, in leagues comparable to or better than Scotland.

Adam has started fewer than half of Norwich City’s league games this season, and has scored six goals from his 12 starts and 16 substitute appearances.  Ross County gave us a lesson in how effective big raw lads can be in Scottish football, and we have also signed a winger who (by all accounts) can cross, so logic dictates we sign a target man.  Let’s hope he arrives and batters a few goals in.

The summer window was one of transition.  Strategy was prepared by a manager who left the building, Brendan chose who he wanted from a short-list already prepared for him (Nat Phillips was an emergency exception).

This window, Brendan has had complete control.  As he made clear at the AGM and on a few occasions since, he signs the players.  He forms strategy and he is responsible for the decisions.  So that’s me reassured.

  1. ” This Window, Brendan has had complete control”

    What exactly do you mean by complete control, Paul? Would you mind listing the areas that he has complete control over in regard to bringing in new players? And also, can I ask how you know this?

  2. The Battered Bunnet on

    Reflecting on Paul’s leader, it is interesting how so much of our discourse here and elsewhere focusses on the responsibility of our non-exec Chairman for so many negative aspects of our club and first team, and how so little of it focusses on the one guy who’s paid the big money to deliver the plan.

    Are we permitted to discuss the merits and demerits of Brendan Rogers’ second stint yet? Or is he still a golden calf?

  3. Genuine question here.

    5 players gone for a month to play in an international tournament.

    Wages budgeted for by Celtic actually being paid by their own countries FA.

    Guessing an average of £60k per month for each player. Total saved by Celtic….£300k. Add in time off through injury to Reo….say another £60k

    Running total…£360k

    Payment to Celtic for each player for loss of availability for that month…..another guess…..£30k per player…that’s another £150k

    New running total….£510k

    Now here’s the question

    Is that extra money not budgeted for, taxed before or after it’s added to the end of year Executives bonus pot?

    Big, mobile, two footed, game-aware strikers are the game’s hens’ teeth.

    Adam Idah ticks a lot of those boxes.

    “Brendan has complete control so that’s me reassured”

    If so he has probably said nope nope nope nope. Get me some real players.

    Pierre’s boy chooses norwich and suddenly we are getting who they no longer need on loan,

    That was our strategy for this window was it?

    And our recruitment team are still in a job?

    In last 18 years 130 of the 202 players we have signed have cost under a million or been loans or frees.

    If you raise the bar to 3m it’s 190 iif the 202 signed.

  13. Celtic plc AGM, 22 November 2023

    FANS’ FORUM REPORT 2022/23

    As set out in the 2017 Report to the AGM, a resolution was passed at the 2016 Celtic plc AGM

    to establish a Supporters’ Forum. The Club are delighted that it has continued to go from

    strength to strength during 2023.

    MEETINGS OF THE FANS’S FORUM IN 2022/23

    Two meetings of the Fans Forum were held at Celtic Park since the last AGM in February and

    October 2023. Each meeting was attended by over 50 supporters.

    In addition to the numerous supporters’ organisations, who are invited to all Forum meetings,

    the Club has a record of over 100 fans who have expressed an interest in attending the Fans

    Forum and the Club continues to invite a number of fans to attend each meeting based on

    the items to be consulted on. Further information can be found on the dedicated Fans Forum

    section of the Club website.

    To encourage open discussion and consultation, the format continues to be managed

    informally, with no recording or social media postings permitted at the meeting.

    The items for consultation continue to be announced in advance of each Forum following

    feedback from fans. For each item, the Club delivers a presentation to provide context before

    consulting with the fans present.

    Following each Forum meeting (where appropriate), the Club publishes minutes of the

    meeting on the Club website. Any actions generated from the Forum meetings are monitored

    via an ‘action tracker’ document which is also available on the Club website.

    KEY TOPICS DISCUSSED IN 2022/23:

    A wide range of topics have been discussed at the forum this year, including:

     Sacro and the ‘Jumping Through the Hoops’ programme;

     Digital Strategy Development;

     Celtic FC Foundation Initiatives;

     Matchday Provision – British Sign Language (BSL);

     Barrowfield Redevelopment & Youth Academy; and

     Away Ticketing.

  14. A “curious signing” means a not very good one, does it not Paul?

    See Chris Killen. This lad is a bizarre, odd or baffling signing.

    It shows we have no intention of changing our style (always playing one up front), we have no serious challenger for Kyogo nor are we prepared.

    Hatate – injured again. CCV – ongoing problems.

    The whole recruitment team is not producing decent results. If that includes BR then it does. You may have faith in that Paul but I don’t because what I am watching is sub standard. The one redeeming feature is that BR has managed to produce two big wins against rangers. However, by this stage of the season it’s not unreasonable to expect a more fluent Celtic side.

    Celtic should be full of goals, even if a little light at the back. We have two consistent midfielders in the CAptain and O’Reilly and they are better than anything the opposition has. Benerado is still a huge question mark. Just because he scored against rangers does not make him brilliant. It just buys him time.

    This is a poor Celtic squad overall, especially in the attacking areas. We don’t have one reliable wide man.

    Players should have been moved in their droves this window.

    We are now taking a huge risk regarding the title. We just don’t have the quality but merely the numbers. It may well be enough but it’s not through any great management.

    …..

    I gave some thought to asking a question but unfortunately I couldn’t express anything that would to be Frank very insulting , so I’ll pass.

    Pretty sure if we were chatting in the pub we’d have a good old blether, internet makes all this chat spiral downwards and not upwards.

    I understand that many people just think everyone on any Celtic board is a self serving chancer and that they actively stop us being brilliant so we are just above the Huns. Better that than to actually confront our position in the grand scheme of European football.

  16. How long before we here (Idah is not match fit).

    Needs 2 or 3 weeks to get up to speed.

    Then it will be he is injured.

    D :)

  17. Go tell the Spartim on

    PLC = Peter Lawwells cabal

    Idah is Hadi backwards, hope thats not a reflection on how this turns out

    CQN tag line used to mean, Celtic News not lazy journalism, now its just a front to push the Chairman’s and other accountants narrative, its as predictable as the SMSM.

    We continue to take punts in the same cost bracket as we did in 2005 and 2006 and expect the same results.

    Roll on Friday when we know exactly what weve got, with Reo and CCV possibly out long term, perhaps the man we pay to manage the team can work some of his magic, much like the first Glasgow derby at Snakemountain, at least the Lawwells cant influence then.

  18. What is the Starz on

    I have seen Adam Idah play couple of times and have been impressed.

    Give the lad a chance..Before the Ibrox game we had the usual malcontents weeping and wailing because Liam Scales was going to have to play and he is feckin useless etc.

    Let’s see what happens

  19. I don’t think the extent of Hatate’s injury has been confirmed. Hopefully, not too serious. Same for CCV 🤞

  20. chairbhoy –

    if we sell a player in the next 24 hours should the board tell all the shareholders how much money we get ?

    or keep it a secret and then report it in the accounts ?

  21. If our manager has seen fit to take ‘complete control’ of our transfer strategy given what we seen last summer, may I ask why our Head of Scouting and Recruitment is still employed ?

    If you’re so bad that you have to be side stepped, why are you still employed?

  22. No idea if this boy is any good. If the zombies had swooped for him he’d be a world beater I’m sure. But it’s us so he’s a project/ underwhelming.

    I’d no idea about most of our recent signings including Matt O’R. So I do this odd thing and give them a chance.

    The mystery left back to back up Greg? Interesting. I await with baited breath.

    And Reo – please god no! Hopefully he gets sent ‘home’ and is not allowed to risk further injury and its not too bad. I live in hope.
