Defence need to play-up for their keeper

812

First the treble then the double slipped through the net leaving Celtic absolute certainties for the inaugural Scottish Premiership title, but with only a couple of higher aspirations to aim for.  Fraser Forster is closing in on Bobby Clark’s Aberdeen league shut out record, which if he keeps a clean sheet at home to St Johnstone on Sunday, he would be able to eclipse 31 minutes into the visit to Tynecastle on 22 February.

Neil Lennon called Saturday’s defeat unacceptable but it would be just as unacceptable to concede to St Johnstone at home this weekend when so close to an all-time record.    Saints have scored only one league goal away from home (at Firhill) since winning at Tynecastle on 2 November last year.  Notwithstanding their four Cup goals at Forfar on Saturday, you could not wish for a more goal-shy league visitors.

The manager was rightly critical of his defence on Saturday so will hopefully use this weekend to ensure they are ready to play up for their goalkeeper this Sunday.

One of the highlights for the Celtic community last year was the incredible Ben Nevis Huddle, completed on the snow-capped mountain in June. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, 28 June. Applications opened on Friday and there are only 77 places left (big mountain but limited safe standing capacity). Go here if you want to get involved.

Not sure I’d take the same conclusions. There’s no getting away from the fact that these are inexperienced players. Remove a defensive mid from the selection and try out a new formation there’ll be teething problems. It’s a pity that it happened in a cup game.

  3. There are an awful lot of arrogant people on CQN.

How can taxi-drivers,teachers, lawyers, council workers etc actually believe that solutions are as simple as they suggest and Neil Lennon must be an idiot not to see them?

Don`t give me the old “entitled to opinions” claptrap. The “opinions” to which I refer are stated as axioms but offer no real evidence.

I still really enjoy going to see Celtic but I am beginning to think that I will need to be very selective in my CQN reading if I don`t want that enjoyment to be diminished by constant negativity.

If some folk have an inbuilt requirement to be negative, then post about Sleekit McCoist.

To those seeking a new manager.. How many seasons will you give Lenny’s replacement to restore the connection between club and support, win trebles, dominate Europe, dispense with projects, attract and retain world class players and fill Celtic park week in week out?

Personally I think the problems run deeper than a change of manager. What we are seeing are the effects of a dual policy of playing staff quality downsizing and, to keep tv and corporate sponsors onside a sanitising of the support.

  5. jungle jim- I think you have to agree mate, the season has been a failure on lots of fronts, along with that comes hard questions for the guys in charge.Never booed a Celtic player, manager in my life ,and never will, guys are doing their best, but is it good enough?HH

This season has been a “failure” against Morton and Aberdeen; par for the course in such a group as we had in the Cl and a runaway success in the League.

With his comment about reserving negativity for posts about Sleekit McCoist you may have unconsciously hit a very pertinent nail on the head.

For too long, too much time and space have been devoted to posts about THEM and THEIR problems and at the same time brushing results like St. Mirren, Morton and an embarrassing CL campaign under the carpet.

  10. The Honest Mistake

    Inexperienced?

    Johansen but no one else.

Also if you are so dependent on one individual who was unfit then coaching a team sport may not be your forte.

“brushing results like St. Mirren, Morton and an embarrassing CL campaign under the carpet.”

Seems to me that those results and the CL campaign were highlighted on here rather than brushed under the carpet. St Mirren?

Are you seriously suggesting that football is such a complex game that people who have not played at the highest level should not comment on something that they are paying hundreds of pounds per season to watch?

Practically everyone in the ground could see after 20 minutes that we were being overrun in the middle of the park

We were asking Brown and Johansen to compete against four or five opponents

In many ways it is to their credit that they did as well as did in getting the ball to our preferred option -namely Forrest

Lenny has said that Mulgrew would have played if fit

That begs the question -did he then actually think what CM brings to the team before he decided to replace him with Sammy?

As others have pointed out if CM was unavailable we would have put in JL but he has left -so the obvious replacement should have been Biton

That the change was not made at HT was poor on Lenny’s part -that it was not made at all was abject

He either couldn’t see what was obvious to even the untrained eye or was too full of himself to acknowledge that he had made a major mistake

That he followed that up by blaming the players -suggests we have a problem IMHO

  16. Earlier today Cork Celt posted to the effect that his normal reaction to a result like Saturday’s was to be down for a wee while and then get on with things. However, in this case he feels that as time goes on he is still on a downer.

I imagine that he is not alone. Personally I have not felt as bad about a result since Motherwell and Black Sunday.

Doubtless one reason for the lingering downer amongst Celtic fans is the growing awareness that on Saturday, a lacklustre team not only surrendered the chance of the fans savouring the winning of the Scottish Cup at Celtic Park but contrived to all but wrap the trophy in red white and blue ribbons for THEIR benefit.

Should the above come to pass, and there is a fair chance that it will, it will be hailed as the greatest achievement in sporting, not just football history. And Coisty will be installed as the greatest manager of all time.

Doubtless adding to the gloom was that on Saturday morning, PL was regaling us about the wonderful state of the club’s finances.

It has not helped that in today’s Herald, subtley touting for THEIR return, Michael Grant was blaming absent Celtic fans for Saturday’s result.

    What’s funny about it?

They are both young bargain basement players, one with half a season with us under his belt, the other has improved considerably in the past 6 months under NL. Both are still learning their trade.

  20. Croppybhoy

    Well said.

The blaming of players has happened to often in Neil’s tenure.

Not impressed that he rarely takes responsibility for failure.

I wouldn’t be too critical of Johansen, overall I like what I’ve seen of him so far. Yes, he fluffed a clearance leading up to Aberdeen’s second goal but I remember a certain Henrik whatsisname fluffing one to Chick Charnley early in his Celtic career, which also cost us a goal v Hibs.

  22. croppybhoy

People can comment on what they want. My point is that matters on the PROFESSIONAL field are not as simple as that which ” Practically everyone in the ground could see after 20 minutes,”.

Just skimming the blog following Saturday’s disappointment. A very frustrating performance from Celtic, and it was annoying that our recent run of clean sheets should come to an end in such a manner.

As poor as Celtic played, Aberdeen fully deserved their win and as well as outplaying us, looked to be hungrier for the win on the day. That is why they are the second best team in Scotland.

The manager’s priority remains winning the league and qualifying for the Champions League. He has ticked the first box already, and his experience of the CL qualifiers gives me optimism Lenny will succeed in ticking the second box again.

It’s always important to retain a sense of humour when you experience a wee setback, and obviously the poster who suggested Roy Keane as a Celtic manager feels the same way.

    I’m still laughing at that.
