Defensive shape not right

482

Penny for the thoughts of Erik Sviatchenko on Saturday as he watched the defence he’ll soon become part of. Players were skipping past Jozo Simunovic while we had Keystone Cops defending from Efe at a corner kick (our problems here are clearly not resolved).

St Johnstone failed to score during their previous five games but would have scored more against a generous Celtic were it not for some fine work by Craig Gordon.

Individual errors aside, there are aspects of our shape I’m not happy with. In previous times you wouldn’t know if the Celtic defence and keeper were having a good game, they were so well protected. In the Premiership, this makes for entertaining football as we march to the title, but at a higher level we’ll be ripped open.

There’s not a proper defensive midfielder at the club. If we’re going to keep to this shape, we’ll need one before August.

One of the well remembered images of Jock`s days was Big Billy sprinting back to his berth when his foray forward, usually for a corner kick, didn`t produce a goal.

*Big Billy was a one off, a true legend. There was a picture posted on here or the HB of an early 60’s squad. Huge tae.

In it as well as Billy were big Cush, John McNamee, Frank McCarron and John Halpin. All fine prospective centre half’s that couldane shift Caesar. Prior to this was John Kurilla captain of a Jock coached reserve side where he won 3 reserve championship and 1 reserve league cup medals.

We actually tried out 2 central defenders with Billy and Cush but we were ahead of our time and that idea never really materialised

One other player in that photie was also signed as a centre half but went ontae become a legendary left back.

I agree re: his old man and Mr. Carter. Guess my main point was that they all have to “bring themselves down” to a level the general population find less suspicious. Equivalent in UK is Gideon Osbourne – calling himself “George” and walking around the country in Hi-Viz jackets

Watching the game from the main stand on Saturday it was blatantly obvious that we needed a dedicated defensive midfielder as Jozo was having a nightmare of a game. I posted suggesting that it might be worth it to take a punt on Murray Davidson of St. Johnstone. He was putting himself about as is his wont against us. He’s six feet thirteen inches tall and would do a good job especially against Scottish opposition. My recurring nightmare is that The Huns will sign him (they tried before) and Mark my words the mibs would let him get away with murder.

Interesting to see how Lawwell plays it. He is to all intents and purpose part of the SFA posse…

I’m never sure if that is to influence from within, or the SFa have brought him in to the tent to piss out a la LBJ strategy…

Be interesting to see if he can swing a better solution or whether he will remain compliant in the erse up..?

  9. Evening boys, or should that be bhoys, back in frae the Louden, good result for ra Bears the night, soon be back at the top table. Watch your backs!!

  10. The absence of Scott Brown is the cause of the pressure on our CBs.

Brown hassles and harries in midfield and doesn’t allow the opposition to settle on the ball with time to look for a pass to a colleague.

His impending return will plug the gap.

Why do you ask if I was at the game, when my last post told you I was just back from the Loudenproud? Rangers were not playing in the Louden, they were playing away from home, not conceding any goals and winning with only ten men on the field. That referee had better not officiate at any more Rangers games. Probably a relation of Mr Murphy!

Would a visit to watch your team prevent you from having a beer afterwards celebrating with your fellow fans?

I was hoping you could give this exile an insight into your team’s strengths and weaknesses.

Given the result at Hampden a year ago, the subsequent drubbing from the second bottom side in the SPFL and the more recent defeat from St Johnstone, I’d be interested in how you are seeing any improvements which could give us cause to fear your promotion to the top table.

“chosen by the military industrial complex…” Not sure about that mate. He came from a political family and was groomed for the job by them from an early age. As many US politicians are. I don;t think he was in there as a patsy, though I admit that he must’ve made a killing from it all. If you’ll pardon the pun. I’m not saying he was Einstein, but he was never as dumb as he played.

    ===================================================================================

I agree with all of the above. Not a “patsy” more of a willing and pliable figurehead who knew he was well out of his depth and relied fully on the advisers , their advice and their ulterior motives….viz the protection of Israel.

Compare with J.F.K.,who did not. Thank god.

  16. The Scottish Football Association have summoned officials from East Kilbride to a Hampden meeting today to try and resolve the issue of where their fifth round Scottish Cup tie with Celtic will be played.

Hamilton Academical issued a statement yesterday ruling out their New Douglas Park ground from hosting the tie, despite the SFA announcing that the match, scheduled to take place on February 7th, would be played there as per the competition rules shortly after East Kilbride defeated Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale last Wednesday evening.

It sounds like a naughty school bhoy is headed to the headmaster’s office for 6 of the best.

And I suspect many of us older posters know what that means.

  17. The result at Hampden well over a year ago was 2-0 to the premier League champions against a team from a lower division. Hardly a mauling. And if Rangers had scored 3 times they would have won, it`s not rocket lettuce. Motherwell had the referee on their side, probably a relation of Mr Murphy, and St Johnstone caught Rangers on a bad night. And Ally was the manager. Warby is different class, he doesn`t need to manage as he is a brilliant city trader, but he`s a brilliant manager as well., look out, Rangers are coming. (panic ensues)

You really have an encyclopaedic memory of those days which I remember with great fondness.

Wonder if you remember big John McNamee being played at centre forward against the hun and scoring.

Big Jock`s reserves……Saw them playing at Ibrox and winning 5-2 .Really thought we were on the cusp of success ,but that took a few more painful years until the return of the Man.

Having a convict ancestor is now seen as a badge of honour.

  26. BMCUWP: Not sure about the term ‘convict’ to describe some of the first people from these parts who were sent to Australia. From an Irish point of view, many of the people sent away from here were destitute and simply trying to eek out an existence by taking food from their own land which was confiscated from them by the British.

Hope all is well with you and look forward to seeing you in Dublin.

  30. Defensive Shape Not Right: I am not sure if RD sees the need for a specialist defensive midfielder for his game plan or if such a midfielder who ticks all the boxes for RD’s type of play is available on the market right now. I am guessing that we need a physical / athletic player who can take care of himself, is mobile and can read the game in terms of position (especially with our wing backs going forward and the frequent forays by our defenders) and can pass the ball, can tackle well, header the ball under pressure and chip in with a goal now and them.

Wanyama was a once-in-a-lifetime player – we got lucky picking him up for peanuts – it took NL almost a whole season to play him as Kayal was favored in midfield defensive position. But even Wanyama was guilty of being caught in possession / the stray passes.

A makeshift solution may exist in converting one of our many midfielders or a defender into that position until a player becomes available that ticks all those boxes.

    Anyway back to lurking

  31. BMCUWP: I don’t know much about British history outside of Ireland but there was a programme broadcast in Ireland around 1980/81 called Against the Wind. It was a Joint Irish/Australian production. The series was about people from these islands who were transported to Australia and served their sentences by working on lands controlled by the British. FWIR, those who were transported from England, Scotland and Wales were similar in background to the Irish who were sent there.
