Defensive shape not right

482

Penny for the thoughts of Erik Sviatchenko on Saturday as he watched the defence he’ll soon become part of. Players were skipping past Jozo Simunovic while we had Keystone Cops defending from Efe at a corner kick (our problems here are clearly not resolved).

St Johnstone failed to score during their previous five games but would have scored more against a generous Celtic were it not for some fine work by Craig Gordon.

Individual errors aside, there are aspects of our shape I’m not happy with. In previous times you wouldn’t know if the Celtic defence and keeper were having a good game, they were so well protected. In the Premiership, this makes for entertaining football as we march to the title, but at a higher level we’ll be ripped open.

There’s not a proper defensive midfielder at the club. If we’re going to keep to this shape, we’ll need one before August.

Whilst I am in a disagreeing mood.

Quite a few on here were saying Simunovic had a bad game on Saturday. From my seat in 106 I would say he had a decent game but made a couple of mistakes. As, indeed, did Gordon, Bitton and Tierney. Things are not always black or white but the ol` shades of grey does not get a look in in many discussions.

As far as I was aware the players club will only allow the player to discuss terms once the prospective club has agreed a fee

Very True and i was going to argue about his intelligence but Alex Rae BFDJ and a few other manage to do it. So your probably right.

I think the way the sfa manage Celtic, is just contempt not miss managed just no time for us. But we just sit on our hands.

You’re right – he’s not the brightest but as you say – it hasn’t prevented any of the other morons from gett in a job. I wish Celtic would take more of a firm line too. We have the financial clout – we should use it.

Sevco aren’t allowed to speak to O’Halloran until his employers agree a fee. I’m guessing those saying the terms have been agreed are the usual Sevco media mouthpieces carrying out the level 5 unsettling player work.

For what it is worth I don’t think The Rangers are officially allowed to speak to the player until terms have been agreed with St Johnstone however if they have other dealings with his agent they can easily start a dialogue etc.

For those who went to Bellarmine – were any of you taught by a Mr Roccicciolli ? He is a colleague of mine who gave up teaching long ago to go into marketing and later TV production. He famously once presented Late Call on STV and attracted sack loads of complaints with his sacriligeous views.

Re: Bush – there was an interesting discussion on radio at the weekend about Trump. The usual “Could the Americans really be so dumb as to elect him”. And Bush’s name came up. The point was made that he attended Yale and later Harvard Business School. He had to act dumb to get elected – he wasn;t the dumb cowboy that was portrayed. Americans have a distrust of intelligent politicians. So any that get the opportunity need to play it down. Jimmy Carter was a “simple peanut farmer”? Actually he owned a large business he built up. You’ll remember the scorn that was thrust on Obama for being a “college professor”? Americans like their leaders to reflect themselves – salt of the earth hard-working types. A stereotype – but it plays well.

I was taught by Mrs Roccicciolli.

As far as teachers go she was alright. I remember asking her what music she liked and she said Santana, it’s strange the things a you remember, which for the late 1970s for a teacher I thought was not bad. I’m trying to remember if she taught Science or French. I’m the wrong guy to ask. When I left and got a job as an apprentice fitter in the yards, I returned very proudly to the school to boast, I was firmly put in my place when the principal said what are you doing here, you were never here when you should have been. I’m sure Mr Roccicciolli taught my older sister.

  13. Ruggygman, Bitton isn’t a defensive mid. He plays as a deep-lying playmaker. I think people are looking for him to be something he’s not. We’ve not had a defensive mid since Wanyama…..

I wish the club would stand up to the sfa, they are a joke and nothing without the clubs. But they moved Peter onto the board to make up for the 12 years of cheating that we know of to make nice and the club seem to be alright with that.

    Shame.

Next season unless the govan team go down the poop chute every Celtic fan has a question to ask themselves, Has My Club has just condoned 12 years of cheating by putting up my season ticket price and call it the old firm or do we stop supporting the club. The second option is not happening and I hope i am not even asked to contemplate it. I don’t buy into “they want them back” we are doing fine financially and don’t need them cheating us out of european money and league titles. Stokes and Henderson should put that theory to bed. I think and hope the club know the depth and width of the new club and wait on them hanging themselves or they just don’t care in which we have a big problem.

Interesting article, Paul. Agree re needing a defensive midfielder.

Although I don’t think we should be so bad (at times) without one.

If one of the full-backs is forward, the other one should hold back a bit and be able to defend a counter-attack.

If one of the CBs gets drawn out wide the other one and the defending full-back can shift across to cover.

The ball can’t be on both wings at the same time!
