Defensive shape not right

482

Penny for the thoughts of Erik Sviatchenko on Saturday as he watched the defence he’ll soon become part of. Players were skipping past Jozo Simunovic while we had Keystone Cops defending from Efe at a corner kick (our problems here are clearly not resolved).

St Johnstone failed to score during their previous five games but would have scored more against a generous Celtic were it not for some fine work by Craig Gordon.

Individual errors aside, there are aspects of our shape I’m not happy with. In previous times you wouldn’t know if the Celtic defence and keeper were having a good game, they were so well protected. In the Premiership, this makes for entertaining football as we march to the title, but at a higher level we’ll be ripped open.

There’s not a proper defensive midfielder at the club. If we’re going to keep to this shape, we’ll need one before August.

  1. Paul Hartley is probably stung a little by the criticism. Despite that, his point remains valid – BBC Scotland’s football programme is garbage. The “big screen” segment is utterly embarrassing and the wee clip from years “gone by” just shows the paucity of imagination of the programme makers. The only pundit I’ve seen worth watching is Michael Stewart. I don’t agree with everything he says, but he is fair in his assessment and calls it as he sees it. Nevin has no credibility. Rather than a clipboard and pen, the producer should give him an outsider for dunking.

  2. I notice that the cup replay, between Dundee and Falkirk is being played this evening. I don’t see it being televised., Paul Hartley should have gone right to the point about BBC Sportscene not showing it.if that had been that mob from Govan, you can bet you’re bottom dollar they would have been on the telly, Time a lot of them over at Sportscene be replaced with folk being impartial, at the moment it seems they are very pro Sevco, same as Clyde 1 full of sevco ex players on there sports programme.

  3. Players aren’t usually sent off simply for celebrating. It’s for a second booking which then becomes a red.

Players who have been sent off for receiving a second booking in this manner are either unable to control their joy or a bit thick Imo.

Sportscene big screen segment was hilarious.

Yeah…Sky must be worried by the incisive analysis of Pat Nevin and Steven Thomshun.

    Talk about amateur hour.

And the clobber they were wearing….wooft, totally minging.

    BBC Budget…stamped all over it.

What next…The cast of River City do Breaking Bad:)

Honestly, unless as rumoured there was something off-camera it was a ridiculous booking.

A raised, clench fist in the middle of the pitch. Miles away from any fans, opposition or otherwise.

  6. Nobody here likes Pat Nevin since he pointed out the sectarian singing like The dear green fields of Athenry and other equally offensive songs.

  7. Coming Soon to BBC Scoddland….The Ten Commandments.

    Starring: Tam Cowan as Moses

Duncan Bannatyne as the voice of God

Pat Nevin as the Burning Bush

    Ally McCoist as Satan.

First time I saw it was last week with Stuart McColl doing it. Are they all up there trying to pretend it’s a Smartscreen? They’re pushing “buttons” on the screen and the graphics appear 10 seconds later. Utterly cringeworthy.

I’m no gonnae slag off anybody’s clothes TBH – not the way I dress. :-))

Your idea for River City doing Breaking Bad might work for Red Nose Day!

Sportscene can do a Red Face Day. Every Sunday…

  9. Weeminger,

I’m not ruling out that there was more that the cameras missed.

If not, it was a honking booking.

I only caught the 2nd half of Secondrangers game, and watched it with the sound down. I always think that judging the legitimacy of sendings off and bookings, by only watching the game (especially on TV), is impossible, as you don’t hear dialogue between the ref and players. For whatever reason the Secondrangers player in question, was well riled up, and I actually thought he was running a risk of being sent off, prior to the goal celebration incident, due to his aggressive posture, and questioning of every decision that went against his team. At face value, the sending off may have appeared harsh, but we do not know if the player was on a final warning, or what the ref had said to him at other flashpoints in the game. He also may have used choice language, and again may have been previously warned about that too.

    Plus he’s a hunbassa :))

  13. Pheersy,

  27. Today Marcus Chown tweeted the greatest explanation for what happened to Rangers fans when RFC died and Sevco was formed:

“The juvenile sea squirt wanders through the sea looking for a rock to cling to. On finding one, it no longer needs it’s brain. So it…eats it”

At least I think that’s what he was talking about….
