Defensive shape not right

482

Penny for the thoughts of Erik Sviatchenko on Saturday as he watched the defence he’ll soon become part of. Players were skipping past Jozo Simunovic while we had Keystone Cops defending from Efe at a corner kick (our problems here are clearly not resolved).

St Johnstone failed to score during their previous five games but would have scored more against a generous Celtic were it not for some fine work by Craig Gordon.

Individual errors aside, there are aspects of our shape I’m not happy with. In previous times you wouldn’t know if the Celtic defence and keeper were having a good game, they were so well protected. In the Premiership, this makes for entertaining football as we march to the title, but at a higher level we’ll be ripped open.

There’s not a proper defensive midfielder at the club. If we’re going to keep to this shape, we’ll need one before August.

Bitton looks as though he doesn’t have a fast setting. His giving up against Hamilton for their goal when playing centre half happens all the time further up the park. Nir should know that even if you can’t win the ball you can still close the space.

Johansen runs all over the place but never with any purpose. I am glad there are still teams that analyse distance travelled etc as a variable in some sort of mathematical miracle formula that nets you a Johansen as a top player. More Gravesen than Petrov and I can’t remember the last time he won an important tackle.

With that said, the introduction of Brown and or another purchase for the holding role won’t solve our problems. There’s only so many times you can give the ball to the opposition before they beat you. We give them plenty of chances at the ball so there’s a high gearing towards creating chances no matter who is defending or in a holding role.

And and and, it’s not just about giving it away it’s about where. We give it away in the most high risk areas when an easier percentage pass would result in less chance of losing it.

The system will win us the league but it won’t give us any chance in Europe. Opposition teams in Europe anticipate the pass and have a higher conversion rate. We know that from the evidence presented to us already under Ronny.

God help us if Griffiths gets injured and thank god no one would try to buy him at Celtics price.

  2. Minx hi hope you’ve recovered from the auld yins celebrations. I realise your may have been taken aback by his treatment but for future ref always get the badge no and if poss make sure there are more than one of you , finally again if poss film and record surreptitiously if required. As you will have seen in the incident from Morrisons car park in Hamilton they hate being “caught” Hail Hail Hebcelt

100% agree re defensive shape and in particular Joso’s lack of pace. He’ll either be exposed as not up to requirements or thrive if partnered with a very fast centre half.

My own approach to coaching is to to have at least one uber athletic central defender. In the modern game lots of attacks come on the break.. If you don’t have a whippet your are exposed.

As for defensive midfielders – Id try converting Armstrong as he covers the ground and is more robust than alternatives.. Rogic is another who worries me with lack of pace.

Paul67 has had a Marc Antoinne Fortune sized bee in his bonnet about Simunovic since his apparently large transfer fee was made known.

The thing about MAF was that we didn’t get the main striker we needed to compliment him. Olivier Giroud was close but decided to go to Montpellier.

To be fair to P67 he is not blaming Simunovic for his being exposed but the system and lack of protection. Still, hopefully our Danish Ukranian can be the missing partner.

I don’t know if it’s better to take players recommended by Lawwels son or spend some money on folk we have scouted.

He did take the number and it is recorded, unfortunately they are scared of the reprisals if they do complain. Not one of them have ever been in trouble with the Police, every game we go to because of his age he is the one who will get searched even though he is with us oldies!

Just lurking but whilst I’m passing….

The Police – I was brought up in Glasgow and the advice my parents gave me was if I ever saw the police coming down the street then cross over to the other side, basically avoid at all costs because too many were far too easily inclined to abuse what ever power they had,

Defensive Mid – thats Scott Brown’s job surely? Ronnie has taken a gamble doing nothing replacement wise him during his absence, a win at Pittodrie and he’ll have got clean away with it

Album Covers – Alice Cooper – Killer – just really liked the red background and the evil looking snake,

  10. Broony has done some of his best work on the right.

  11. I am sure Broony could play the defensive midfield role.He has all the experience. If RD switched him there, and told him exactly his duties,he would be the best we could get.Broony gets about the park like no one else, and I am sure his talking to the rest of the defence would work wonders. It seems the attacking style of our midfield, with all these kids now looking like they will be the future, leaves the position of the old head perfectly there for Broony.

    In my opinion anyway.

  13. If Celtic are in talks to take Patrick Roberts, who Man U paid 12 million for,and of whom the former player on SSN,said was a fantastic talent, then it should only be considered as a year loan.If he is as good as reported, could be a real help in qualifying.

Why would we need him to the summer for?

It seems to me that those who think every SPFL game should be a walkover for us, fail to understand the vagaries of football. This might help:

    Celtic 1 Motherwell 2;

    Hearts 6 Motherwell 0;

    Celtic 8 Hamilton 1

    Hamilton 0 Hearts 0.

  17. Statement from Hamilton Accies

It has recently been reported that we will be hosting the William Hill Scottish Cup 5th round fixture between East Kilbride and Celtic on Sunday 7th February.

We have a full programme of Academy, Youth and Community events already planned for that weekend and have no intention of altering our club programme and as a result will not be in a position to make New Douglas Park available to stage the tie.

Travelling home from the game on Saturday, ACGR made a good point.

I was saying that the level of ability required to be a PROFESSIONAL footballer is very high indeed. In spite of this, we hear many fans ( of many teams) talking of how rubbish they believe many professional footballers are. ACGR agreed and made the good point .

” Yes. How often do you hear anyone talk about how rubbish a professional golfer is? Or a professional snooker player? ”

Any professional in any sport has to be very good. After that, it is all relative but an awareness of how good one needs to be to be a professional footballer might lead to a greater appreciation of just how good the Celtic players are.
