Defensive shape not right

482

Penny for the thoughts of Erik Sviatchenko on Saturday as he watched the defence he’ll soon become part of. Players were skipping past Jozo Simunovic while we had Keystone Cops defending from Efe at a corner kick (our problems here are clearly not resolved).

St Johnstone failed to score during their previous five games but would have scored more against a generous Celtic were it not for some fine work by Craig Gordon.

Individual errors aside, there are aspects of our shape I’m not happy with. In previous times you wouldn’t know if the Celtic defence and keeper were having a good game, they were so well protected. In the Premiership, this makes for entertaining football as we march to the title, but at a higher level we’ll be ripped open.

There’s not a proper defensive midfielder at the club. If we’re going to keep to this shape, we’ll need one before August.

Spot on, it does seem so obvious that we need a dedicated defensive midfielder to do the simple stuff and protect our central defence.

Still, really enjoying the fast tempo forward play of the last 3 games.

I don’t see a problem with the shape, it’s the personel for the shape.

We need a DM, haven’t had one since we sold Vic.

I think that’s a first for me, after 12 yrs.

You are perhaps new, so I’ve deleted the swear from your comment but please refrain in future. I’ve left the “fascist behaviour” in, as it speaks volumes….

  6. Surely we have too many in the first team squad, if RD is wanting to give CM TR JF a new deal that is also going to compound the congestion, he needs to address this but I agree we are too open and easy to counter against , either we dont play people there or they do not keep the team shape and get carried away wanting to attack

This is one of those it’s Paul67’s site, he can do what he likes issues but am I alone in not being too interested in Neil Lennon’s Bolton career?

  9. Most iconic album cover for this wee mhan has to be Freewheelin with a young Mr Zimmeran looking very cauld walking doon a snowy NY street, could have been taken yesterday )), with the vivacious Suzy Rotolo. Crackin album tae.

Worse in cover and material wise must be Their Satanic Majesties Request, a pale imitation of Sgt Peppers, which incidentally I never liked, much preferred Pet Sounds, musically anyway. Seemingly so did Paul McCartney.

In fairness tae the Stones how can you follow up the likes of Aftermath and Out of Our Heads.

Meant tae add Carly Simon’s No Secrets album cover, all mouth and braless, what’s not too like for a young lad with bouncing hormones.

Just read her biography there. Who is You’re So Vain about , well she now says Warren Beatty but if she hadn’t come out with that it would be pretty hard tae determine who it is as she did like men.

  10. Laurelgreen just two posts and already we can see you are going to be a welcome addition to the blog.

  11. Album cover for me is In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson

Kind of reflects my expression when reading Keech Jackson

  12. A defensive midfielder ? Yes please.

Meanwhile ,full backs behaving like full backs, not wingers would be a starting point.

Have we learned nothing from the Tommy Burns era ? Pleasing on the eye.Yes.

    Some Vim Jansen Pragmatismcsc.

Wi ‘Let It Bleed’? And the three after that? Downhill thereafter, mind.

FWIW,Freewheelin is top-notch and one of his best. But for me,his best are Highway 61 Revisited and Blood on the Tracks.

  14. We have 2 centre mids in Johansen and Bitton who are positionally poor.

Neither can tackle well or offer much going forward.

Combined with full backs who play high it often leaves our centre backs one on one.

    A recipe for disaster.

    Our European results weren’t surprising.

  15. Would like to see Liam Henderson return and play in the more defensive role. He has all the attributes, just lacks a bit of experience.

  16. No one in their right mind believes the IRA broke into Castlereagh, went to the room with all the correct files on agents and informers etc,

    No-one.

Since that’s the basis for this story, I’m highly sceptical as to why its emerging now.

    HAVE YOUR SAY

THE story of a Hibby reader who wrote to me offers a good insight into how authorities are actually supporting bad behaviour at football matches rather than clamping down on it.

At Ibrox at the end of last year, he was “disgustingly” verbally abused, tried to make a complaint to a police officer … and was told to “move away”.

With the chant of “die you Fenian b******s” ringing around them, he asked the officer why he wasn’t noting his complaint, whereupon he was threatened with arrest for “breach of the peace” if he didn’t return to his seat.

He did – and was pelted with coins, lighters, bottles and cans. Another officer witnessed this missile assault so naturally, my reader asked him what action he was going to take against the perpetrators.

None, was the response. Instead he was advised to write to his MP.

Individual police are probably scared to do their job lest they become the victim of a mob attack, but leaving real victims defenceless is not an option.

If the football industry (for that’s what it is) won’t spend its own gate and TV revenue on stopping vile behaviour, or suspend the teams who attract such criminal followers, we have a choice.

Send in the army – or at least be honest and put up signs around the grounds saying the law doesn’t apply within stadiums where such teams are playing, spectators enter at their own risk, the police will not help them and it’s every man for himself.

  19. I know we are looking for toughness and grit in the midfield, Brownie should be back in a couple of weeks. Someone made the comment about Kieran getting lumps kicked out of him on the weekend, this was mainly done to the referee letting them get away with it, but Kieran needs to give it back as well. It won’t happen when big Erik is along side him, I don’t think he’ll be letting anyone take liberties

I don’t know if i’m allowed to join in or not or if i’m following the posts correctly but for album covers you can’t get much more “rock n roll” than The Clash LONDON CALLING and for sheer class Roxy Music COUNTRY LIFE. I hope I’ve not upset anyone if I have apologies in advance.

Our two first choice Centre Halves – Simunovic and Boyata – have all the physical presence of a French Fancy.

A centre forward sneezes in their direction and they fall over. Some serious Gym work needed by both to gain the requisite ballast.

Brown, though of limited ability has enough about his game to be able to play a purely defensive role
