  1. Does this make any sense I’m not really seeing much progress under RD just now, yet I’m enjoying some of the football we are playing I’d rather lose 4-3 as1-0 but I’d rather not lose at all hopefully he will sort it out

  2. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

TET, we are where we are and can only be as competent as our current resources permit. Did we do the right or wrong thing in appointing RD as manager? I don’t know.

Contrary to some of the drivel I read on here, Celtic are not shite. I’ve not been to every game this season, but I have been to every home game and for some of the posters on here who never set foot in Celtic Park to tell me I’m watching shite is laughable.

Maybe some of these guys are the ones who want the nuns back.

I’m looking forward to my four and a half hour round trip to watch “shite”.

  4. From Seville – to punching above our weight in the CL Group Stages (GS/NL) to stumbling into the Last 32 (including via another technicality) – here’s where we are 10 years on!

Post Christmas qualification despite the past 2 EL results just about sums up our current team/squad’s mediocrity – played 2/ lost 2/ conceded 7/ scored 4.

Against decent opposition – a team needs its GK + 8 players to perform better than average and when necessary carry their 2 out-of-sorts team-mates (with the coach using the bench to supplement or enhance the shortcomings).

    Being honest – our team/squad lacks sufficient ‘better than average’ numbers to get that 8+GK format on the park on most match days (and particularly in Europe). What we can call on;

    GK – Gordon

    FB’s – Izzy/ Lustig (when fit)

    CB’s – VvD/ Denayer (on loan)

    Mids – Broonie/ Johansen

    Strikers – Guidetti (on loan)

Can we honestly say (in terms of team contribution) that; Commons/ Stokes/ Efe deliver 90%+ input – one game in two?

Or does our midfield dominate – one game in three? Don’t start me on creativity!

Or is our strike force clinical enough to get us a result – one game in four?

Here we are 30+ competitive games into the season and what have we learned?

Domestically we’ve coped – goal ratio 3:1 – top of the table and in 2 cups (a better than decent bet for the treble).

In Europe – goal ratio 2:3 – into Europa Last 32 (but humped by; Legia/ Salzburg/ Zagreb – not exactly European heavyweights).

GK+ Back 4 – in theory reasonably sound but drastically undermined by the ‘catastrophe’ of midfield combinations/selections operating in front of them.

A midfield (with the exception of SB/SJ) that’s had 6/7 different other players operate in a; 2/3/4 – with no outright creative or defensive mid and gaps on the pitch that could double up as an Asda carpark.

Wingers/wide-players – 7 different players – left-footers on the right and vice versa.

Forwards – one upfront (at home) – others deployed wide left/right (just to confuse the 7 wingers we’ve played in that position).

Collectively this is one of the poorest squads we’ve had in the past 10 years (even though defensively sound last year). Ronny comes in and radically changes the format – clearly the bulk of the squad are incapable of adapting (understanding) or lack the technical ability to execute his plans.

We will win the league and the ‘high-pressing’ game will serve us well in the domestic cups – unfortunately we will be ‘picked-off’ with regularity by technically competent European opposition. We don’t have a team (never mind the squad) to operate Ronny’s system at 90% for the 90 minutes in any given game.

Tonight’s result aside – Partick Thistle a week ago; loads of possession, inability to make passes stick, lack of ball control, recycling the ball, little threat but game won. Saturday – a first half cameo; flowing possession, high-tempo pressing, carving out chances, inability to score – a result but not without late chances for the opposition.

Yes I enjoy us winning but I want to see us ‘playing’ – I want to see us respected (feared even) when facing European Opposition – short to medium term I can’t see it!

    H!H!

    TET 2354/0028-

I think you are right, neither Ronny nor Neil has full control over who comes in but I think this is a practice that has been going on ever since Martin O`Neill left; look at the comments in Roy Keane`s latest book where he says Gordon Strachan didn`t want him at Celtic. It clearly came from Desmond, as I would wager did the signings of Daryl Murphy and Robbie Keane. Its already common knowledge that Tony Mowbray knew nothing of Edson Braafheid before he trapped at Lennoxtown.

But what we have now, as you say, is John Park dominating, despite an at best patchy record in terms of his previous recruits.

We have the Bangura fiasco; who was the Portugese player we were in for at the same time, I think the guy went to Sevilla?

Pukki, Balde, Derk, Lassad, Miku, Gershon, Rogic, Brozek, the list goes on, every signing is a punt to an extent but we seem to specialise in bringing in guys that the manager jettisons after 2-3 games.

The scouting does need to be overhauled but I don`t hold out any hope. Press speculation has us going back to Israel in January, a market we have already plundered to no good use. It stinks of laziness, using a select network of scouts and agents that are not up to it.

Meantime Peter Lawwell cheerfully announces that there are no Scottish players good enough for us.

Afore I retire, I agree, we are far from shite, only last week, and the week before we were ways far from shite, yet tonight we have regressed to the hun level, no for me.

Most of these posters should ditch the manager toy and get themselfs up to Celtic park and convince Pedro that they are the biz, get Ronny te feck and take us to the days of Big Jock.

  7. Martin – Neutered the Huns and their 2 teams sh!!te in the Daily Ranger, one for Scotland, one for the Champions League.

Gordon – Whilst Celtic realised they couldnae compete with EBT’s etc, Gordon got 2 last CL 16s

Tony – Shocking what happened to him. The Hun Establishment made sure the Hun Won to Stay alive. Tony would have Won that League by a canter if the Hun were not teetering on the brink.

Neil – Legend, that shower sent Bombs and Bullets but he still took us to the last 16 of the CL, to be blatantly cheated by Juve, another corrupt Club. Also, some would say, ending the Greatest Club sides invincibility, with outstanding tactics.

Ronny Deila – He has a hell of a job following on from such a Manager as Neil. He is the Logical Progression tho.

Whats that phrase? Iron fist in a velvet glove, likely smell the Glove.

TGBS, after TM was sacked and Lenny was installed it wasn’t all sweetness and light. I think we might have got 5 points in the EL when Rennes and Udinese were in our group.

I’m not giving up on RD just yet. We’re still in Europe after Christmas which in my lifetime has not been a common occurrence.

I guess what I’m saying is that I’m not getting my panties in a fankle just yet, unlike some on cqn. I just don’t see the same disaster as they do.

    TET

I agree to some extent with your comments that its not just about the manager, he clearly has signings imposed upon him, look at the comments about him not being keen on loan signings and then hey presto 5 loan signings appear.

Nonetheless there`s a few concerns that rest with him – for instance a winning position was attained in all 6 European away games this season and surrendered in 5 instances. Suggests we have a coach who can`t shut up shop and kill a game.

  10. tgbs

His name was Baba Diawara, he went to Sevilla and did feck all, might have done better with us, who knows.

Fact, since MoN, our coaches have had to coach what they have been given, no bad thing in the grand scheme of things, if the players are in keeping with the current coaches ideas.

The next month will yell us mucho what Pedro thinks imo.

I accept that Ronny has his probs, but he believes what he believes, and fair play to him fo sticking to his guns, his system will work given the players he wants.

There are mmany examples of this out there, Salzburg, Basle r 2 who spring to mind, they are what we should be looking at.

    ACGR-

Lenny certainly wasn’t all sweetness and light immediately, I still have nightmares about that Cha OG v Rennes for example and the less said about Utrecht the better.

But he played a lot of European games while players were going in an out (in 2010 I think we had 10 players coming in during or after the qualifiers while the likes of McGeady went out).

Ronny had to put up with similar turmoil this year, although not quite to the same extent.

Its no coincidence that our best year in Europe in recent times – 2012/13 – came when we had very little summer traffic in terms of incoming and outgoing players.

That’s up to the board to sort out as we`re often told that the benefit of getting guys like John Park to scout our players is that there`s less disruption through player movements when managers come and go.

  15. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

Baba Diawara? We were supposed to be signing him a few years back and made an arse of it. Then he became too expensive.

    Diawara, that’s the guy.

Basel are an exceptionally well managed club, they have beaten Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool (twice) and Spurs in Europe in recent years. I don`t know how they do it but I`m sure there`s much we could learn from them.

  18. A Ceiler Gonof Rust on

TGBS, the thing is, I still get a huge buzz every time I visit Celtic Park. Every day I take my seat I do it in the hope that Celtic will win and that I’ll be entertained. Granted, that doesn’t always happen but that’s part of the joy of sport.

I know I’ll always have the buzz but the day I think the entertainment has gone is the day I’ll give up the long drive and loss of a day. Now that may be because we do truly become shite, or it may be because the hun are helped even too much for me. Or it may be because our board piss me off to the extent that some on here are already at.

I’m not there yet and hope I never do get there.

After all, what else would I do? I could be out there making an total arse of myself on the man’s course at Carnoustie instead…….naw naw naw.

  20. Rational Thought on

PF ayr, Hamilton tim, The Glorious Balance Sheet, your boys took one hell of a beating by Alloa. Seriously if you dafties can say that Johnasen when attacking midfielder in europe gave the ball away due to bad passes, so did Kris tonight, its 3-1 to Johansen in goals in Europe, and Commons was disposed 6 times tonight due to lack of speed or lack of physical strength. He is only good for the SPL, too old, no longer a European player if he ever was at that level. How some folk can not see that Johansen is a better player than Kris is beyond me, they would make hopeless managers as commons lack of physical strength and a first touch that is either great or crap, with 50% of each, is not worth the inclusion in the team these days. Pirlo and others bandied about where European quality because although they lacked pace their touch was always brilliant, their passing was usually brilliant, they could also hold of a man at European level, commons touch and strength is not in the same league as Pirlo or Lubo.

I aspire to better than Chris Commons for Celtic, sure we might never get a guy with pace and a football brain for that role, they’d go to a big league but their is no reason we can’t get a guy who has a more consistent first touch than Commons and who also is able to hold his ground physically in Europe, he doesn’t need to be a so called “run about daftie”.

Heck I think we already have one but although I really rate Ronny, I cannot for the life of me know why both he and Lennon before him did not use him; his name is Liam Henderson. It seems stats, evidence etc will be thrown out the window by these fake Celts above who would rather see us lose and play Commons where he played tonight, than admit Johansen is no worse at passing than Commons and is considerably stronger and more energetic to boot than Commons. He also has more goals in Europe this year than Kris.

  22. Phew. That was burny. Angry fireman sprayed me with his hose, which was most humiliating.. But still, better that than reading back here at times :))

In revognition of the one in five posts worth reading these days, I echo the few calls to give AM a bit of time and a bit of respect, as a year of his career was sacrificed because he had the cheek to wear a Celtic top during a “professional” game of football.

  23. I cannae wait to see the Ronny Deila team in 2 years Time, next Season should be very good as well.

It is obvious that Stefan is the perfect advanced midfielder for Ronny D’s system. I’d also reserve judgement about him not being as creative as Kris Commons. We’ve hardly seen him in comparison but he certainly has a vision for a clever reverse, or through ball.

I sensed early that Ronny would use this Season to assess the squad that Neil left him and then build from there, not for this Season, but, for future Seasons.

Broonie has signed on and Ronny said the Team needs to be able to play without Key players like Broonie, we are miles away at the moment but we will get there.
