  1. Ah there’s nothing like a meanigless defeat to to bring out the best in the Faithfull eh? I read back as far as I dared before the mudslinging, insults and just general abuse got too much. “Can’t we all just get along?”

Anyway, last night couldn’t have come as much of a surprise to anyone who’s watched Celtic in Europe for the last fifteen or so years. A bit disorganised, weak defensively (in terms of as a team not specifically the back four) and a few under-par performances.

Matthews has had, and will have, better nights. Bitton showed he’s fine to step in at domestic level but not yet switched on enough for Europe. A few others definitely didn’t have their personal dials set to eleven either but not surprising in a meaningless tie.

I saw on the Celtic Facebook page one guy screaming it was the worst performance from the worst Celtic team he has ever seen. I’ve seen the same reactions whenever we lose this season all over the internet. When did we become Masshysteria&overreactionCSC?

I thought it wasn’t the worst thing to have some of our frailties exposed for all to see a couple of weeks ahead of the transfer window. No papering over the cracks.

And finally, surely to God that’s the end of the Mubarak Wakasso experiment? He was so bad he made Stokesy look like a world-beater when came on (burely by comparison you understand).

I hope each and every one of you have a lovely day. Whether you agree with anything I say or not. :)

  2. G’mornin’ – earlyish, frosty / snowy start

    here on THE Rebel frontline.

Positives and negatives from last night.

Ronny and Johnny have lots to think about between now and January.

Knowing nowt I’d accomodate Kris ( so doubtless he’ll be for the off…)

Minimum work today, maximum festive bevvy with the troops – “disco” later.

I’ve heard and read quite a few people say they think this is the worst Celtic team they have ever seen. I certainly don’t think this is the worst Celtic team I have ever seen (nor is it the best), but I do think it is doing ok with the resources available.

I think the fair judgement point for this Celtic team is the end of the season.

  4. Jungle Jim & ACGR –

Such generosity of spirit is so typical of CQN. I have already made enquiries of Mario with a view to getting him and his daughter over to Celtic Park, but unfortunately at the moment, his state of health won’t allow it.

It took tremendous effort and some assistance just to get him to Zagreb, which is only an hour from his home town by train.

However, that can change, and I will have another go in the future and, if he is up to it, I will certainly come back to CQN for advice and assistance.

    Thanks and Hail Hail.

  5. Davidopoulos,

Oh God they’re not the best (I can’t imagine any Tim thinks they are) but I can remember teams from ’91 – ’94 that current team would have righteously skelped. My old Da (bless ‘im) insists we don’t know we’re born as we didn’t have to sit through the fifties and early sixties.

All about perspective I suppose. And if the perspective at the end of the season is that we look back as League Champions and winners of one or (dare I say it?) two Cups then I don’t think we’ll have too much to complain about.

Although I’m sure plenty will manage.

    Preferences?

Olympiacos, Zenit St Petersburg, Sporting Lisbon, Athletic Bilbao, Borussia Monchengladbach, Club Brugge, Besiktas, Salzburg, Dynamo Moscow, Inter Milan, Feyenoord, Everton , Napoli, Dynamo Kyiv, Fiorentina, Legia Warsaw.

  7. It’s easy to see what RD wants even when you listen to him, ….everyone has to be fit, and everyone has to play and work hard as a team, just like Zagreb did last night, no slackers, no passengers, and no stories about how long you been with the club, what you did and how you played before he came, it’s no nonsense and shape up, or ship out, it’s the modern way, and the way the top teams Europe play, keep up or be left behind, simples.

i thought celtic played last nights game like a bit of a freindly.fisher and henderson got euro experience out of it.didnt anyone notice no british team won last night.everton played four academy players and had seven more on the bench.sometimes a team can get more out of losing a game than winning a game.

    World Peace….,

Think of how much we can claim for compensation, they two BHOYS must now be worth £2M without a tribunal, if it’s experience that counts, no ?

  11. Burning_Bush

That John Brown is a bad man lol.

I remember seeing John Brown in Costa Coffee on Sauchiehall St a few years ago, he was absolooooootely smashed.

Funnily enough that was during my first date with my girlfriend (I didn’t just take her to Costa btw!)

  12. Celtic have little or no chance of beating any of those sides unless the manager can change who is in his team, learn not to play with two wingers away from home, not play McGregor, we can keep VVD and Guidetti and Scott Brown is fit and in the team.

Celtic cannot pass and retain the ball and have failed in almost every European match to do so. If you cannot do that, you cannot win or hope to win.

There is ZERO solidity in the midfield and teams run through us with ease – Zagreb, Warszawa and Salzburg showed that.

There is also a lack of goals in the team which may or may not be rectified by Guidetti if he is still at the club in February and at the back we are hopeless. Mathews was a shambles last night, Efe Ambrose is Efe Ambrose and Izzy is often caught up the park leaving huge gaps on that side.

It is no wonder we have lost 22 goals in Europe this season playing like that.

But for Craig Gordon that figure could have been over 30.

I see no progress at present and those teams we could get could take 8 off us (Warszawa got 6 in game time missing 2 penalties into the bargain). If that doesn’t frighten you then you are willfully blind.

If the manager does not get backed properly in January then humiliation AGAIN is almost guaranteed in Europe and struggle in the cups in Scotland is a very real possibility.

There has been SOME improvement in domestic matches – the team are winning but the problems persist – they don’t pass the ball well, they miss too many chances and they look fragile at the back.

Ronny Deila has been one step forward two steps backs for most of the season and unless he gets in players who will play the way he wants to play and he also puts solidity into the team in terms of shape and defensive capability especially away from home in Europe this will be another poor season.

Last season was awful. Out to Morton at home, out to the Sheep at home in the cups, thrashed in Europe after making it by the skin of our teeth into the group stages and still lessons have not been learned.

Thus far we are in 4 competitions. That is an improvement of sorts but lose to Sevco however unlikely that may appear to some and the season will have been a disaster.

I am very worried about the future and I am not taking pleasure in this as one poster accused me of doing when I said a bad beating was on the cards last night – it was and we got one even though the scoreline looks more respectable than the game actually was. Zagreb took the foot off the gas at 4-2. Celtic played well when they brought on Fisher and Henderson for two players who were passengers at best. If Zagreb had been in the mood or that game had been the difference between getting through or going out I dread to think what would have happened.

I can accept a transitional year if I see where it is going.

January is a test of credibility on and off the park.

If you’re confident then you’re a better man than me.

  13. What a strike from MAF, I can’t remember that goal from him but the pictures don’t lie.

I don’t think there should ever be a celtic game described as ‘dead rubber’ and last night should have been a chance for some ‘fringe’ players to make their mark. We looked threatening from set pieces in the first half but would then cause our own downfall with slips, mistakes and some dodgy defending. I am a big fan of Adam Matthews but last night was not his best by a long way.

Once again we showed that without our captain, we get opened up to easily on the counter attack. The 2 early goals at the start of the second half further proved this. I think a defensive mid fielder, someone who takes no nonsense has to be a priority in the January window. This would let others such as Scott or Stephan do their own job properly.

No-one like losing but with JG to come in after Christmas and Ronnie to hopefully make a few of his own signings, I think we will be a different proposition. I have been critical of our new manager at times this season but I think I am warming to what it is, that he is trying to achieve.

Was Kayal injured for last nights game?

Felt sorry for Adam last night, especially after his game at the weekend.

It all went downhill for him when he kicked the ground.

    I think he missed broony

  15. Celtic are in Europe after Christmas, top of the league, in both cups one of them a first time opposition and we should judge the transition year in May, when Ronny will tally up the Cups and we will see where we are at. Only a few short months. HAve patience hoops. Will it be a successful year ?? Time will tell. Hail HAil

  16. I understand giving some younger guys experience of Europe but last night’s game was worth £250k.

I honestly think we should have gone all guns blazing to win it . We could have brought 2 guys on at half time had we been 2 up…

It is worrying that we are so reliant on (the much improved) Scott Brown to the point where the team are effectively impotent without him. Imo SB wasn’t hood enough to be first 11 only a couple of seasons ago.

I like Biton very much but wondering if he’s the type of player who is great when we are dominating but can’t roll his sleeves up when we need to get in to games?

Imperative we extend Craig Gordon’s contract and fend off any January suitors.

I would also happily contribute towards getting Mario and his daughter over to see Celtic

I will not tell him all with the team is rosy though, cause it’s not

Now yer talking, get on that old negativity train this AM, where you up all night thinking about that post, a great start to the negativity weekend UNTILL we beat St Mirren, ohhhh they will all be in Mark my words, they just can’t wait to see Celtic loosing a game they slobber out the side of there mouths, there eyes bulge out of there heads, there knees are on constant jerks as they type anything bad about us, they swoon to the Jimmy Shand accordion band c/d playing the sash in the background, the predictables have arrived.

Aw no danger. If I knew there was a £15 option with a DVD I would have been right into that.

    On last nights game.

I felt the manager learned a lot. I’m sure he learned that Kris Commons will probably get one more appearance to say goodbye to the fans and then he will depart in January. Cracking servant great wee player but not buying into what Ronny wants. It happens. Players either don;t adapt or can;t adapt. I think there is an element of both with Kris. McGregor is not ready. He had a good spell at the start of the season. He was one of the first to buy into Ronny’s style of fitba and it paid dividends for him. He is now toiling and I would send the Bhoy on holiday for a week.

A few weeks ago I said if Adam Matthews had a bid from England anywhere in the region of £2m I would drive him there myself. In the main I was slated for it. I then said I would even take £1m+ at a push. Last night confirmed for me I was right. He was all over the place at most of the goals. Not sure what has happened to the Bhoy. Maybe struggling for full fitness but his positional play was horrific. In his defence he was not helped by McGregor.

Wakaso can go back to Russia. The Bhoy has no discpline to hold his position. He didn;t appear to be able to get the basics right. I don;t see a future for him at Paradise. He has had chances and not taken them. Thanks for the goal in Salburg.

Scepovic needs games. I was reasonably pleased and his work rate was excellent. Very well taken goal.

In all honesty we were pretty poor last night overall and scored 3 goals against a very average Zagreb team. Their basics were better than ours but at some points the game resembled a school match with every shot at the target resulting in a goal.

If we can play that badly and score 3 times then there are positives. Ronny rotated the squad and I think he learned quite a bit about his squad players. Henderson looked superb when he cam on and surely deserves more game time. I have been championing Fisher for a long time. A very able RB who will only get better. I have been talking about young Paterson from Hearts for some time but if Darnell is back to full fitness he will do for me until Lustig is fit again. We miss Scott Brown so badly it is unreal. Anyone who doesn;t appreciate what he does for the team should watch back the game last night. The space between defence and mifield last night was crazy. Zagreb exploited it at the 3rd and 4th goals. School boy errors from the team. I was not too annoyed at the result. 4-3 away from home with a much changed team in key areas is respectable. I’m sure the people who are very unhappy would have been OK with a 1-0 defeat. It was a dead rubber. We were through already and we march on.

What is important from last night is Ronny identifies who is surplus to his vision. He must forget sentiment. He must keep the players who will work in his system. The syle he plays does not afford passengers. A luxury player may be Ok but the other ten must work harder for that to happen. Some of the Bhoys must be due a run. Fisher and Henderson would be very near a first team start for me and Fisher in particular would start at the weekend. Anyone who will not be part of the plans after January should now be frozen out the first 11 unless we face an injury or suspension crisis. The only exception would be Commons who deserves a final run out at Paradise after the service he has given the club.

The KO phase will throw up a big tie. This is the type of games we wnat as supporters and the players will relish it. Hopefully it is a very attractive game. When bringing players in this window a big European tie would be a carrot. Staying in the cups and giving players the chance of a clean sweep of trophies in the next 6 months is also a carrot. Ronny needs to get the right players. Experience is required at the back. A ball player is required in midfield if we are to purchase anyone up front he must be good in the air. Use the Youths more. The talent and application is there.

3 goals away from home when playing awful? When Ronny’s team clicks we will see plenty goals. Tough game at the weekend against a very able Paul Hartley side. Battlers please Mr Deila. Get the league wrapped up as quick as possible. Our rivals will start to take points off each other and we will be able to play some of the youths in league matches towards mid March and see what more of them have to offer. Get the surplus out the club in January. We have way too many passengers. Get quality not quantity in the door. Experience please Mr Deila. I can see what he is doing and a 4-3 away is not a disaster. Some players let themselves down last night with their performances and the manager knows it. Ronny is making huge changes to the first team in terms of diet, fitness and style of play. One day soon it will all click into place and we will skelp someone all over the pitch and then not stop doing it. At the minute we are finding out who is not able to play in his system and although it may be players we felt would be part of this club for a long time if the manager feels they can;t be part of it going forward they depart quickly.

There is a lot to look forward to with this manager. We learned a lot from the defeat last night. Ronny will get to work on it in the coming months.

Guidetti is with us until the end of the season regardless of whether we buy/sign him in January.

I don’t think 1.66 goals/ game in the group stages is that bad. I agree we need to close up at the back but we will be able to play our best team in the next stage (fitness allowing), which thus far we have been unable to do.

We’re in a totally different place to where we were when we played Legia and I don’t think we’d ship the same number of goals against them this time. There’s other teams we could draw that I think are below them in quality.

You’re never out until you’re out.

Matthews confidence took a bad beating when he was thrown in at left back at the camp nou last year. Straight in from having been out injured for months.

He was destroyed that night, not helped by being not fully fit and up against messi and neymar on his weaker side. He hasn’t been the same player since in my view.

As soon as Lustig went off injured v Maribor and Matthews came on the Slovenians started attacking down that side whereas they had sat in all game until then. Within 3 minutes they had scored from a cross that Matthews should have stopped and we were out of the CL.

Same thing happened at home to Inverness this season. Inverness had offered nothing all game long, Lustig goes off injured for Matthews and all of a sudden Inverness start getting joy down our right hand side and create numerous clear cut chances from there.

No coincidence that in those 2 games and in the Zagreb game last night Matthews was paired up with mcgregor. That combination is an open invitation for even modest teams to rip through us at will.

i have asked this before but when did commons be unable to trap a ball.cant reallly remember it being a problem before this season,in fact i think he was that frustrated at one point he pulled his arms in togive him better control and gave away a foul.is it a new lighter ball they are using, cold be.

If last night was the worst Celtic team ever perhaps I’ve been unwittingly fed hallucinating drugs sometimes in the past.
