Dinner with the president

629

I didn’t comment on reports earlier this week that the SFA would allow Rangers International to complete an internal investigation into alleged links between Craig Whyte and Charles Green as I thought this was the appropriate course of action.

The SFA acted correctly: they wrote to Rangers International expressing concern over the matters in hand, and received assurances that their questions would be answered by an independent panel.  Last year the football authorities were slow to enforce compliance with predecessor club, Rangers, but we can hope they apply a little more pressure this time.

News, released last night, suggesting after it was established Craig Whyte had been struck off as a director and would therefore face disciplinary proceedings, he had dinner with SFA chief executive, Stewart Regan, and president, Campbell Ogilvie, is far more concerning.

Mr Regan assured us that Mr Ogilvie, who he admitted was “heavily conflicted” by matters concerning Rangers, would remove himself from matters concerning the club he was previously a director of.  This is meaningless if both parties met to discuss disciplinary matters with Mr Whyte before formal proceedings were underway.

What is increasingly clear is the co-dependency between so many characters in this play, including Regan and Ogilvie.  They exist to keep each other in a job. This co-dependency will be jeopardised by the one man so many are attempting to paint as the only villain of the piece. Craig Whyte has them all taped and will not go down quietly.

It will be a frustration to many that the bottom half of the Scottish Football League clubs have held out for a bigger share of the trickle-down pie.  Odds on a schism opening up between community and full time clubs have to be high.

Many thanks to everyone who has ordered (below) Willie Wallace’ autobiography, Heart of a Lions.  It goes to print this week and will be with us soon thereafter.

  8. One of my local MSP’s has been responding to my emails regarding the Stupid Bill.

Basically he agrees and hopes to be able to scrutinise it in Parliament after the football season, the Government has to report to Parliament at some point in the next year.

I hope many more MSP’s are persuaded by his point of view.

The response given to him by Kenny McAskill was lamentable. Basically make complaints direct to Strathclyde Police.

I see NotoNewco are picking up on the idea of approaching SFA sponsors with a petition.

    http://notonewco13.wordpress.com/2013/05/22/drip-drip-drip-time-to-sort-the-tap/

I have a suggestion there currently waiting in moderation but now appearing on TSFM for targetting William Hill. The reasons and suggested draft petition follow. One way or another we will get reform.

    Post to notonewco.

I tried the sponsors route a year or two back and think it is certainly the way to go. But based on my previous experience of grabbing the SFA attention (and I have) I think that only sponsors with whom integrity and good governance are pararmount to to their business should be targetted.

In that respect, having read about William Hill , their policy on good governance, their connection through CEO Ralph Topping with Scottish football and the absolute dependence of their business on their customers believing in the integrity of the sport they are gambling on, that Willam Hill are prime targets. Accordingly I reproduce a draft below which can be used as suits as the basis of a petition to them.

If you can use it and get the petition seen all over social media and if possible reported on by main stream as an indication of fan unrest and determination to have SFA reformed you might finally grab both SFA and mainstream (who have been very quiet on the SFA) attention enough to make change happen.

    Suggested Draft to Willam Hill.

    To Gareth Davis

    Chairman William Hill.

We the supporters of Scottish football note and applaud William Hills stated commitment

“to high standards of corporate governance, which you consider to be central to the effective management of the business and to maintaining the confidence of investors.”

We therefore find it difficult to understand your backing via seven figure sponsorship of the Scottish Football Association (SFA), an organisation that supporters believe has failed to uphold, and continues to undermine, the integrity of Scottish football, the very characteristic on which William Hill’s football gaming business in Scotland and wider depends.

Many, if not most, supporters view the SFA as corrupt with a corrupt leadership and unfit for purpose and we are surprised William Hill have maintained a sponsoring association with them, particularly as your CEO, Mr. Ralph Topping held the post of independent Chairman of the Scottish Premier League for over four and a half years and must be very well aware of supporters views on the fitness for purpose of the Scottish Football Association with regard to upholding the integrity of our game.

Supporters and customers need assurances before paying to watch football or place a bet on the outcome of a game, that the only deciding factor is sporting merit and we believe, as William Hill themselves do, that proper governance with clear separation of responsibilities is a means to that end.

We therefore ask William Hill to ascertain from the SFA on behalf of Scottish football supporters, who are also part of the William Hill customer base,

    • What remedial steps the SFA are taking, including changes of personnel, to restore credibility in the integrity of the SFA and so our game

    • To make public the full SFA reply to William Hill

    • Decide on that basis if William Hill is prepared to continue with their sponsorship and make their decision public.

This petition has xxxxx signatories and we trust that William Hill will share and act on our concerns for mutual benefit and take them to the SFA as requested.

Squire, your observations on the recent court case highlight the perspective taken by MSM. My guess is that tomorrow’s rags will be full of ‘we wuz robbed’ type stories. The fact that the Fiscal’s office/police invested a fortune in a spurious case will not merit a mention. As for the ‘unprofessional conduct’, betcha there’s a promotion when the dust settles.

    Good stuff.

Sometimes, in fleeting moments, I catch a wee glimpse of a good future for football, in which players are people, fans are important and spivs stick to selling stolen spoons.

I’m not keen on the way the betting industry seems to be all over the game, but you are correct that an organisation such as William Hill needs the game to be played correctly and to be seen and believed to be played correctly.

    This is the exact quotation

“There is no country on earth that we have more family connections with than Northern Ireland,” said Salmond. “They are the blood of our blood, bone of our bone.”

At the time I found this quite remarkable. Firstly because the first sentence is factually incorrect, secondly because he is usually a very ‘careful’ orator. The second sentence on analysis would be regarded by the most unskilled speech analyst as no no territory for any politician seeking to appeal to or connect with a broad audience.

It would appear to pander directly to the planter Scots origins as opposed to any deeper Celtic connection. He would surely have been aware of the context, impact and interpretation of this and yet was absolutely comfortable in delivering it.

As a stick to be beaten with it must rival our own George’s ‘Saddam – Indefatigable’ contribution.
