Dougie Dougie and SFA cover-up

897

As a consequence of items relating to lies told by former referee Dougie McDonald’s no longer being found by searches through Google’s UK portal, while reaming available on the US portal, a suspicion arose that McDonald has used recent EU ruling to have these items expunged from the search engine.

During a Dundee United-Celtic game in 2010 McDonald awarded Celtic a penalty, then quickly changed his mind.  He lied to Neil Lennon after the game, and to the SFA supervisor about the circumstances which caused him to change his mind.  Celtic Quick News published an excerpt from the supervisor’s report, which was based on information McDonald subsequently admitted was false.

Having admitted to a lie, and under pressure from Celtic, McDonald resigned later in the year, but the greater stench was that of cover-up.  Having set the chain of events in motion, McDonald realised his error and admitted what he did to the SFA on the day of the game.

Having lied, he quickly came clean, but the actions of the SFA were far more serious.  With knowledge of the lie, the SFA were now in ownership of it.  They should have told McDonald to apologise to Neil Lennon and the referee supervisor.  Instead, they publicly reaffirmed the lie.

Even after the cover-up came to light, the SFA continued to close ranks on Celtic, faces were set to stone.  If Celtic didn’t know their place when it came to the dark arts of the SFA, they became acutely aware of it then.  Nothing could ever be the same again.

I have sympathy for McDonald.  He made a mistake but quickly did the right thing.  His name is tarnished largely as a consequence of the actions of his superiors.  If he called Neil Lennon the next day to extend the apology he gave to the SFA, the matter may have ended there and then.  He was not an innocent victim of an SFA cover-up, but he was a kind of victim.

The fight to change the SFA goes on.  Peter Lawwell is now on the board and some of the faces have moved on, but it is not a healthy body.  The vast majority of the 93 member clubs are not conspiratorial in nature and have no ill towards Celtic or any other club, but overhauling the labyrinth of committees, with vested interests which have been decades in the making, will look like pushing water uphill to anyone committed to reform.

Our interests are best served leaving the SFA behind, and we’re not alone in that.

Excitement builds as the 10-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day takes place tomorrow in Aberdour, with Frank McGarvey and Len Murray!

This year we are raising money for Glasgow the Caring City and The Cookiejar Foundation. We have two copies of this magnificent canvas, signed by Billy McNeill, one is available to the highest bidder on ebay here.

The other is available for raffle. Every donor to this JustGiving page gets an entry in the raffle. The minimum donation is £1, which we can all afford to participate in, although you can donate as much as you want. Our thanks to @BarryMcGonigle for the image on the canvas and OPG Graphics for creating the work.

  1. SJ gets the break 2-1 CFC

Bit of a mix up between their gk and defence which SJ put in from tight angle

  2. Good strength shown by Johanson to retain possession & slide the ball home from an acute angle.

  3. I can recall the furour on here about us having on loan the toon’s 3rd reserve goalie (while Tim Krul was on loan at Falkirk)who had already been on loan to such luminaries as Stockport County and Bristol Rovers. In 6 years he NEVER started a 1st team game at St James.

Even though he had won a Scottish Cup badge and was runner-up in both the League and League Cup, “I’ll drive him back myself” was often written as well as “Liewell’s bonus and downsizing”.

Then that all changed on December 10, 2011 when he saved a controversial last minute penalty against the jambos.

A similar situation happened with Sammi, “drive him myself to the airport?, “Greek Tragedy” etc, and then on January 2, 2011 at Hades he became a Greek Ghod.

Celtic supporters being contrary, aye and always have been.

When I was in High School in the early 60’s we had a teacher who was a regular attendee at Celtic games, home and away. “Sir, sir, who’s the worst player at Celtic Park”, now this is circa 1962/63.

The teacher had a boy playing professional at the time so we thought he was good viewer of talent replied……”Charlie Gallacher”.

Roll forward a couple of years and we have the deid team at CP, September 5, John Thompson’s 33rd Anniversary.

The previous Wednesday night in a meaningless League Cup fixture at Rugby Park both Big Billy and Bobby Murdoch were carried from the park against a waddell led kilmasonic.

So n a dreich wet Saturday with both youngsters Jim Brogan and John Cushley drafted in (hard as nails too) a Big Yogi inspired Celtic beat their at one time rivals 3-1 with Charlie G missing a penalty and a brilliant Bear goal called back for a free kick to us !!!!!!!!!

However the real MOTM that day was Charlie who had the “great” slim jim in his pocket. BTW baxter like mcsleekit was another “legend” that flopped at Roker Park…go figure, legends in their own minds.

6 weeks later we lost 1-2 to them in the League Cup final…MOTM baxter, Charlie didnae play that day.

Big Jock would later say “you don’t win anything with a team full of Harry Hoods and Charlie Gallagher’s” …naw but we widnae have won the 65 Scottish Cup, the 65 League Cup (which in this wee mhan’s eyes was the catalyst for the Big Cup and the honest NIAR) and 1/4 Final of the Big Cup without CG.

Incidentally in the opening Glasgow Rivals game at the bigot pit of the 65/66 season we lost 1-2, the consensus of the support was Jock’s leaving out Joe McBride for that game was the reason we lost……Charlie didnae play either.

  4. Our pressing play is distinctly better than I can remember.

Long balls not being used as the easy option to get your breath back.

    Used only when necessary.

    Future is green & white.

Live on Celtic TV ….VERY good quality picture

  8. What happened to Charlie Gallacher? I do remember being impressed by him in 66-67.

I was out of Scotland for a few years after 67 so lost track with things a bit.

  9. HT Celtic 2 (Stokes, Johanson) Krasnodar 1

We started and finished the half well but were vulnerable to the long through ball.

They only took 1 of their 4 chances through 1-on-1 with LZ (couple of good stops).

Derk anonymous again and DMcG slightly more effective. VVD looking on the whole composed and class. Others getting the rust out.

Interested to see subs in 2nd half but decent performance against a Russian Premier team playing to their nippy forwards.

  10. Just logged on after work expecting to hear the familiar pre season angst only to discover we’re winning!!!

Winning our first pre season game !!!

Surely this is not the Celtic way?

  11. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

    Bigchips,

Ah, the good old 5-4 days.

    Tontine,

I was just thinking the other day about the Norrie Hamilton inflicted carnage at Rugby Park that day.

He did Bobby and when Billy sought retribution, he did him as well.

I often wondered if that was the start of Murdoch’s ankle problems.

  12. Craig Gordon will have to be as fit as Scott Brown under the Deila regime.

From the HT interview he seems like a man who had lost confidence.

Sounds like he has personal ambitions to prove other people wrong.

Trying hard not to sound ingratiating when asked about playing for Celtic.

    Very respectful and sounding genuine.

He wears the jersey so hope he gets the support when he takes the field.

Message to Celtic fans “Delighted to be here, hoping to get my form back to where it was before or even better. Hoping to help Celtic get into the Champions League again.”

Derk anonymous again and DMcG slightly more effective. VVD looking on the whole composed and class. Others getting the rust out.

I hope Danny McGrain is subbed at half time… He is getting on a bit

  14. 2nd half and we have new team on.

Under the cosh for the first few minutes, 3rd corner in a row for them.
