Dundee and the heights of Scottish football history

834

Congratulations to Dundee FC who return to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time in seven years.  Back in the 60s Dundee were a top European team.  They won the league in 1962 and in the preliminary round of the European Cup they trounced West German champions, Cologne, 8-1 at Dens.  Cologne put a more respectable face on the aggregate result two weeks later, winning 4-0 in front of 40,000 fans.

Dundee went on to beat Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon 4-2 on aggregate in the first round proper, this while Portuguese runners-up, Benfica, retained the European Cup only five months earlier.  If the Cologne result was the most enduring in the collective memory, the 4-1 win over Sporting at Dens was one of the all-time great results in Scottish football history.

Anderlecht were next victims, losing 1-4 in front of 65,000 fans in Brussels before the fairy tale ended in the semi final against eventual winners, Milan, at a packed San Siro.  A Wembley final against Benfica was Milan’s prize, a tie Dundee would surely have fancied.

The result against Cologne is historically the most impressive but this was not the case at the time.  This was a period before the Bundesliga when West German teams participated in regional leagues, with the winners playing-off to enter the European Cup.  Once German teams were able to join a financially prosperous league instead of being shackled by historical custom, they never looked back.  Dundee, like all Scottish clubs, are disenfranchised from the history they could be creating by the poor value of their TV market.

It’s time for a change, not just for the sake of Celtic!  If only the guys running the show knew the history and heritage of the team promoted today, or believed in the potential of Scottish clubs.

“Think that Jenny let herself down badly the night she glassed a guy in Bairds”

I think Jennie was given some grace over that carry on because it was shortly after she had flung that molotov cocktail into the Louden.

I was in Benny’s chippy on the Parade when she breezed in that night and ordered a black pudding supper like nothing had happened.

‘Can embdy smell petrol?’ she said. And ‘Haw Benny, don’t skimp on the chips.’

She’s always been mad on the drink but.

  7. Re Dundee’s championship winning team from 1961/62.

Here they are demolishing Rangers (1873 – 2012) at Ibrox in November 1961 on their way to the title.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYsDK6rIslc

It gets a bit foggy at the end however Ian Macmillan can clearly be seen demonstrating an early example of simulation at 7 minutes 20 seconds where he only earns an indirect free kick.

At 4 minutes 23 seconds wee Davy Wilson (Master simulator) manages to stay on his feet but still appeal for a penalty.

The linesman also looks like he is desperate to take the resultant indirect free kick,

Dundee won the title by 3 points from Rangers (1873 – 2012) and Celtic had a part to play in the destination of the title when they drew 1-1 in the final derby game of the season which had be re-scheduled from New Year.

Highlights of that game can be seen on the excellent Celtic Viewer on the official Celtic website.

Even discounting the handle, the other two ends are both pretty businesslike.

  9. I just cant stop laughing at the fighting fund forking out £507 for players towels and Hateley talking about them being ‘cash rich’. PROPERTY DEAL! It was always a property deal…

  10. Oh and yes, I was wrong about Rivera being past his best – though it was his ninth season as a regular first-teamer with AC Milan he was just 26: think about that.

Jenny is a pure mentalist. However Mags is, arguably, the bigger Tim. Mind that time in 84/85 she was in Phil Coles waiting for the supporters bus and it never showed up? Mags just bricked the windscreen of a passing 260 that was heading in to Glasgow and forced the driver to pull over. She then ordered everybody off otherwise she said she’d “coverer then in purple p!sh”. Then everybody in Phil Coles piled into the bus and Mags drove it herself to Dunfermline where we beat them 3-2 in League Cup.

Oh dearie me.. Seems like Sevco may have to accept some punishment or they ll be playing in the park with coats for goals and picking whoever turns up…

And the day that keeps giving carries on…

  14. Margaret thought that Roddy Llewelyn was a snowcake but he that he did have nice hair and his submissiveness fitted well with her aggressive approach to romance.

Jennie thinks that romance is for wimps and that violence is the only solution for everything including porphyria.

Swally & Green will be appearing at the Ayr Gaiety this summer. At least there’s a grater chance of that happening than there is of Sevco fielding a registered team.

Kojo – Don’t you worry about the socialists. Just as St. Patrick brought the heathens into the light and love of Christian civilisation, I will never give up on elevating our socialist friends above the dismal ideology that afflicts their thinking.

Where there is discord, may we bring harmony. Where there is error, may we bring truth. Where there is doubt, may we bring faith. And where there is despair, may we bring hope.

I see your point about our pocket battleship players and would never wish to disrespect the vertically-challenged-but-not-footballingly-challenged. If we sign Mr White I shall give him my wholehearted support.

I don’t know about furry snakes but hear that Bomber Brown has been leading some gatherings down Ibrox way that look like a casting call for “Where The Wild Things Are 2”.

Does this mean the SFA etc are trying to continue the old Rangers history with SEVCO ?

  21. Evening all. Just got back from Stuttgart. I must say, I’m dissapointed with the showing yesterday. If we want to to get through the qualifying rounds, we’ll need to do an awful lot better than we did against a team that was just promoted from the German 4th division! I have no idea what we are meant to be doing with a few of them. Especially Murphy, and Blackman. The rest weren’t much better. We created no pressure in the 2nd half; not a shot on goal. Very dissapointing. There was quite a good attendance though. Lots of Germans wearing the hoops and singing their versions of the songbook. Lots of them were St.Pauli fans as well. Great that we have such a number of foreign fans that show up to support the Bhoys. Not many clubs have that. Hopefully we will improve in time for the important games coming up!.

No harm to you. But if you expect anything more than seeing the players getting their fitness up to scratch at this stage of the season then you have a lot to learn.

These games are totally meaningless and not even worth watching on the computer.
