Dundee and the heights of Scottish football history

834

Congratulations to Dundee FC who return to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time in seven years.  Back in the 60s Dundee were a top European team.  They won the league in 1962 and in the preliminary round of the European Cup they trounced West German champions, Cologne, 8-1 at Dens.  Cologne put a more respectable face on the aggregate result two weeks later, winning 4-0 in front of 40,000 fans.

Dundee went on to beat Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon 4-2 on aggregate in the first round proper, this while Portuguese runners-up, Benfica, retained the European Cup only five months earlier.  If the Cologne result was the most enduring in the collective memory, the 4-1 win over Sporting at Dens was one of the all-time great results in Scottish football history.

Anderlecht were next victims, losing 1-4 in front of 65,000 fans in Brussels before the fairy tale ended in the semi final against eventual winners, Milan, at a packed San Siro.  A Wembley final against Benfica was Milan’s prize, a tie Dundee would surely have fancied.

The result against Cologne is historically the most impressive but this was not the case at the time.  This was a period before the Bundesliga when West German teams participated in regional leagues, with the winners playing-off to enter the European Cup.  Once German teams were able to join a financially prosperous league instead of being shackled by historical custom, they never looked back.  Dundee, like all Scottish clubs, are disenfranchised from the history they could be creating by the poor value of their TV market.

It’s time for a change, not just for the sake of Celtic!  If only the guys running the show knew the history and heritage of the team promoted today, or believed in the potential of Scottish clubs.

Chucky Green : “I don’t think there’s a time limit on it but we definately need it as soon as possible but there’s still a number of issues outstanding between Rangers and the SFA and we’re working on them now.”

    NO TIME LIMIT??? Whit?

Basically if they want the old member license they’ll need to take the penalties & sanctions too and they don’t fancy that much.

Does anyone know if Jim White has the remit to say and ask whatever he wants on SSN? The hurting hun went on and on for about ten minutes, grilling Doncaster about the prospects of Sevco getting into a reformed League set-up. Will this clown ever get over it? Between him and Smudger, I’m getting tempted to call the cancellations dept.

Maybe he was just taking it easy. I remember seeing footage from a Brazil game around 1971/72 against either Peru or Chile and Pele was like Terry Hurlock – after the game the two teams had a mass square-go.

There is also a great clip on Once In A Lifetime when he takes out Rodney Marsh – the night before the game the bold Rod had made a snide comment about Pele in a TV interview and that was his reaction to it.

Michael would have escaped if it hadn’t been for Margaret’s amorous advances pinning him to the kitchen table with the cargo sent flying everywhere. Jennie was none too pleased and to this day there is a feud between the Bond/Fagans and the Windsor/Battenbergs that makes the Hatfield-McCoy feud seem like a 60’s hippie love-in

I had heard that Jenny and Princess Margaret were drinking buddies. I also heard that Jenny introduced HRH to snakebites or snakies as she liked to call them. They didnt see eye to eye about Mickie Fagan though . Mags would often say to the Queen that she should have flew into the wee tadger with the business end of a claw hammer- much to the delight of the QM.

i read Pele’s biography. in it he says that as a 16 year old prodigy he was being hacked stupid by older pros. His coach taught him to fight back, literally, or he’d never get the chance to blossom. I saw one clip when he was in his prime. Playing for Santos, he waltzed past 2 or 3 players and immediately spotted another hatchet man lunging in at him. His reactions were so quick that he left the ball for a split second and went over the top on the defender, doing to him what he was going to get. And in the same move, carried on running forward with the ball. He was hard as nails, brilliant in the air, razor sharp thinker, dynamite in both feet, quick and absolutely deadly as his 1300 goals will testify to. Oh, and 3 world cup medals too.

In November 2007 FIFA announced that he would be awarded the 1962 medal retroactively, making him the only player to have 3 World Cup winners medals’ -lifted fromWiki/EWLM/EWTB.
