Dundee and the heights of Scottish football history

834

Congratulations to Dundee FC who return to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time in seven years.  Back in the 60s Dundee were a top European team.  They won the league in 1962 and in the preliminary round of the European Cup they trounced West German champions, Cologne, 8-1 at Dens.  Cologne put a more respectable face on the aggregate result two weeks later, winning 4-0 in front of 40,000 fans.

Dundee went on to beat Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon 4-2 on aggregate in the first round proper, this while Portuguese runners-up, Benfica, retained the European Cup only five months earlier.  If the Cologne result was the most enduring in the collective memory, the 4-1 win over Sporting at Dens was one of the all-time great results in Scottish football history.

Anderlecht were next victims, losing 1-4 in front of 65,000 fans in Brussels before the fairy tale ended in the semi final against eventual winners, Milan, at a packed San Siro.  A Wembley final against Benfica was Milan’s prize, a tie Dundee would surely have fancied.

The result against Cologne is historically the most impressive but this was not the case at the time.  This was a period before the Bundesliga when West German teams participated in regional leagues, with the winners playing-off to enter the European Cup.  Once German teams were able to join a financially prosperous league instead of being shackled by historical custom, they never looked back.  Dundee, like all Scottish clubs, are disenfranchised from the history they could be creating by the poor value of their TV market.

It’s time for a change, not just for the sake of Celtic!  If only the guys running the show knew the history and heritage of the team promoted today, or believed in the potential of Scottish clubs.

We used to call her JB – never a problem.

She’d just launch into ‘dig a hole and bury him’ … which on reflection may have been her way of controlling her aggression.

I remember having a great night out wi’ Jenny Bond in Coatbridge when she lamped some guy who wouldn’t stand up when Amhrán na bhFiann came on the jukebox. That was before her BBC days when she used to run about wi’ the Kirkwood Young Team…

I was being slightly tongue in cheek. The main reason for going was to see him. I was excited for days beforehand. I think we all accepted at the time that he was the best ever (and in 1970, who could argue?) but there are other contenders now….Cruyff, Messi, Billy Urquhart…

I know. But the point I was making was that if he made the point in 1966, the year before 1967, then he was probably correct.

If he made it after 1967, he was wrong.

Please tell me you dont need me to spell out what happened in 1967 to make him wrong….

Pele was as hard as nails – I don’t think any of them would have kicked lumps out of him without some form of retribution. He could more than look after himself.

  10. Dunfermline are victims of the scandal. The complete lack of examining of the role of Duff & Phelps meant that, while players, manager et al should have been out the door with creditors such as Dundee United, Rapid, the handyman, whoever, being paid as much as was available, they represented Craig Whyte, they continued to not pay taxes and kept a stay of execution/liquidation till after the Pars were down. The rules state that in the event of a team going belly up, there will be no relegation. If the rules had been adhered to, Rangers would have been wound up before the end of the season and Dunfermline would have stayed up. I have no preference to Dundee or Dunfermline but we are all on about sporting integrity: all who protected the dying Rangers did the Pars no favours.

  11. Has anyone been lucky enough to see Billy Urquhart play live?

I was going to see him at the ole Burns Howff but the story was that they were having one of their “no uglies” nights and he never showed up.

More believable though…..Jennie/Jeni/Jenny/JB was there and there was talk that she’d told Urquhart to keep away or his tea wiz oot.

  12. Marrakesh Express on

    Cadizzy, I agree.

I always put it this way…There are the great players which include the likes of Zidane Beckenbauer 2 x Ronaldos Eusebio Platini Puskas and Best. Then there’s the elite…for me, Messi has joined that group which consists of Pele Maradona Cruyff and Di Stefano. Pele tops the lot in my book, an incredible scoring record and a player who had everything. Having said that, I’d never argue with Mr Stein who said that Di Stefano was the best ever.

  13. Billy Bremner would have signed for us but apparently Bob Kelly didnt like his old man. On the McKinnon/Big Billy question I think they had about the same number of caps- McKinnon was no mug BTW

my father took me to Hampden to see Scotland play Brazil in a warm up for the ’66 workd cup. Pele played that day. Unfortunately, I was only 9 so don’t remember if he was any good or not. I do remember that by the time we got in (after 20 minutes or so) all the scoring had been done. A 1-1 draw with Stevie Chalmers scoring in the first minute. The chances are some of the Scotland fans didn’t cheer.

    i was at that game.

The Scotland manager, can’t remember his name now, designated Bremner to man mark Pele; emphasis on the mark.

Bremner proceded to try and kick Pele off the park, thereby denying the fans the opportunity to watch the great man perform.

After the game, however, Pele said howmuch he enjoy the experience and that he was delighted to get Steve Chalmers’ jersey and a Celtic badge.

BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS – Sadly, you are fundamentally correct on virtuallyevery point that you make.

I know, you’d think I’d get tired of hearing about my sagacity, but I don’t! :)

Yes,we can blame the private sector for the failing, but we have to blame the ethos which invited them into the process in the first place-which,btw,without point-scoring was introduced by Mrs T-but we also have to look at the oversight involved.

I think government procurement was a dog’s dinner long before Mrs T came on the scene, although she certainly did champion privatisation. Her privatisations were successful though.

But you’re right, it’s the oversight that’s the problem here. Nothing wrong in principle with government hiring private firms to do specific jobs (unless we think The State should try to do everything directly, which would be madness). Lots wrong with incompetent procurement and badly drafted contracts that leave the taxpayer on the hook for the failures of private sector contractors.

It is much the same with the long-term unemployed-we can blame the people involved, but again,we have to look at the oversight, and once again,Mrs T was responsible for introducing that culture.

I’ve heard Mrs T given the credit for many things, but being the architect of the modern welfare state is a new one.

Because, like it or not, there but for the Grace of God go a great many of us.

Yes. Any one of us could end up in the position of being unemployed, and any one of us could be forgiven for making the rational choice to maximise his own financial wellbeing, security, and comfort, by preferring to stay within the benefits system than go into the uncertain and often badly paid world of work.

It’s a perverse system where we incentivise child-like dependency on the State, subsidise the break-up of families, and punish people who tried to save for their own futures, but that’s where we are right now. I don’t think Atlee’s postwar government would have been pleased.

If we as a society are to move forward we have to find constructive solutions rather than let successive governments kick the can down the road till we run out of road. Not much chance of that happening though unfortunately. (thumbsup)

think the problem was caused when Dundee applied for an spl share before the deadline.

    Nostalgia about Dundee.

My father’s favourite Scottish player of all time was Billy Steel a Dundee legend. Which funnily is exactly the same name as my father. Funny that!

Billy Steel (the Dundee player not my father) was the first player ever to be sent off playing for Scotland but went on to win 30 caps.

  19. After today’s decision to invite Dundee aboard it feels like a door has closed.

I’d like to thank Paul Brennan (Mr.67) above all for giving us such a voice, and a forum to fight and rail against the msm lies, the corruption of the footballing governance, the sleekitness of the masonic cabal and the opportunity to keep the light of truth shining on the huns.

Set the pricing of the game as it would be for a Stranraer or Alloa game; ie no more than £15 per adult; kids go free or a token £1.

Doing this may cost us a wee bit of money in lost revenue but for them that will be a fortune getting lost.

I think Scottish football, and Scottish footballers, have suffered from being a smaller nation which, in the 60’s was unlucky to be up against big countries to quialify for WC’s (Italy in 62, W Germany in 66). Add to that our proximity to England, some of our players did not get the recognition they deserved. For dribbling, I don’t think there is anyone to beat Jinky (though that Messi comes helluv close).

We might noty have any in your elite group but there are several who are worthy candidates for inclusion in your next tier…and not just Billy Urquhart and Gregor Stevens

  26. There can be no doubt that had Rangers F.C. paid their taxes last season—instead of withholding them which the SFA’s independent tribunal found brought the game into disrepute—their entry into administration and collapse pending liquidation would have taken place during the season 2011/2012 and Dunfermline F.C. would not have been relegated.

The S.F.A. as the licensing and regulatory body for the sport were negligent in allowing Craig Whyte and Rangers to operate in the SPL and in their own Cup when it was apparent that neither the individual nor the club satisfied the strict regulations that apply to all clubs. By their dereliction of duty the S.F.A. allowed an insolvent Rangers led by an improper person to stumble on to the end of the season before collapsing.

Had the S.F.A. carried out its regulatory role with its normal zeal there would have been one expulsion and no relegation from the SPL.

As I see it, the obvious way to right this wrong would be to reinstate Dunfermline to the SPL. They should never have left it had the S.F.A. not been asleep on the job.

Charles Green says there are still a

    number of issues between his

    Rangers newco and the Scottish

    Football Association before the club

can be granted a membership to play

    in the Scottish Football League.

    SFL chairmen voted Green’s new

company into the Third Division at a

vote at Hampden on Friday with

Dundee gaining a place in the SPL for

    season 2012/13.

    Although the league bodies have

decided which level the Rangers will

compete in this season there is still the

    outstanding issue of the membership

being transferred from the old company

    to the newco.

All clubs require this membership to

    play professional football in Scotland.

Speaking exclusively to STV, Green said:

“We wish Dundee every success and we

are now looking forward to reaching an

agreement with the SFA so that we can

get on and start playing in the Third

    Division.

    “I don’t think there’s a time limit on it

    [the membership] but we definitely

need it as soon as possible but there’s

still a number of issues outstanding
