Dundee and the heights of Scottish football history

834

Congratulations to Dundee FC who return to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time in seven years.  Back in the 60s Dundee were a top European team.  They won the league in 1962 and in the preliminary round of the European Cup they trounced West German champions, Cologne, 8-1 at Dens.  Cologne put a more respectable face on the aggregate result two weeks later, winning 4-0 in front of 40,000 fans.

Dundee went on to beat Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon 4-2 on aggregate in the first round proper, this while Portuguese runners-up, Benfica, retained the European Cup only five months earlier.  If the Cologne result was the most enduring in the collective memory, the 4-1 win over Sporting at Dens was one of the all-time great results in Scottish football history.

Anderlecht were next victims, losing 1-4 in front of 65,000 fans in Brussels before the fairy tale ended in the semi final against eventual winners, Milan, at a packed San Siro.  A Wembley final against Benfica was Milan’s prize, a tie Dundee would surely have fancied.

The result against Cologne is historically the most impressive but this was not the case at the time.  This was a period before the Bundesliga when West German teams participated in regional leagues, with the winners playing-off to enter the European Cup.  Once German teams were able to join a financially prosperous league instead of being shackled by historical custom, they never looked back.  Dundee, like all Scottish clubs, are disenfranchised from the history they could be creating by the poor value of their TV market.

It’s time for a change, not just for the sake of Celtic!  If only the guys running the show knew the history and heritage of the team promoted today, or believed in the potential of Scottish clubs.

  2. A decent read about the role of some of of our self serving sports journalists and the role of the BBC all through this debacle. Personally I find the BBC to be guilty of complete lack of objectivity in this story bowing rather to the pressure to repeat unhindered the PR spin of those who would suffocate our game.

from a bright and sunny wembley – forecast maybe beginning to pick up in advance of the ole limpics .

With regard to the ‘when will Celtic have the league sewn up’ debate , my tuppence worth .

We are now , by everyone’s admission , the BIG fish in the pond . The only prize . Every team will now play against us as if it’s a cup-tie . Why ? Because they have nothing to lose . Instead of 6/8 games against the ‘OF’ and the consequent potential loss of 18-24 pts , they now have 3-4 games against us and the knowledge that every other team is thinking the same -‘ no matter how much better ra tic are than us , they can’t keep performing ALL the time ‘ .

I don’t think it’ll be a cake-walk for us . I think we’ll win the league but there’ll be a few ‘surprise’ results along the way ,. especially if we have Euro footie and then have a difficult away trip to Pittodrie or Tynecastle .

One final wish for this brave new world we live in ? That the fans use this (re-) found camaraderie to try and show themselves and the world that scottish football not only WILL survive but will FLOURISH. That’s not to say we can’t still slag each other off but maybe , just maybe , some of the bile can be left behind .

By the same token, we can still reasonably expect to win the majority of our games, only now the odd dropped point here or there won’t have hte possibility of being decisive in the title race. On that basis I’d like to see us adopt a mroe free flowing attacking style of football.

Entertaining football will help mitigate any potential losses. It would be so great to see the crowds up because of it.

I agree that every match will be a cup tie.

Good for the game in my opinion, however, my biggest fear for the new season is complacency.

If it’s a cup tie for the teams we are playing, we must approach it as a cup tie too.

Some posters on here saying we could have one team for Europe and another for the SPL.

Maybe, when we are 25 points clear in the league.

    But not before.

    Hope you are well!

I do, don’t I. I’m not but it’s not an unreasonable expectation and I’m not talking about us having it all done and dusted by Christmas either.

To be honest, I’d rather see us play with reckless abandon and take it to the last game of the season than have it won in February with a series of 1-0 wins.

  9. Philbhoy , cheers. Doing well thanks. Yersel ?

Working in London at the moment – just as well it’s the close season ! Looking forward to next season. I don’t think complacency will be an issue , just human nature – teams will be more up for it against us .

Weeminger . As you say , it might lead to a more open game , esp if re-construction raises it’s head !(opens lid , drops grenade in , retreats) . Yes , we’ll win the majority of our games but i’d be willing to bet we won’t exceed our points total of this season .

There are still other factors to consider.

For example, the effect the demise of the huns will have on the mibs.

Plus one of dallas’s offspring could be refereeing our games in the coming season.

I do not believe and in my opinion, in all the circumstances, he will not bear a grudge.

I’m going by train to Berlin on the Wednesday and then across to Dortmund Thursday night, (fly home from Dusseldorf Friday night) I know there will be loads to do and see especially in Berlin, and I have a few ideas lined up (eg going to visit Dachau while in Munich). However its a bit of going into the unknown and I’d be grateful if you could offer some advice…cheers in advance

  17. Blows the arguement, it is the same club with the same history right out the water.

Newco Rangers CEO Charles Green is to

ask UEFA for help in reducing the club’s

debts of around £3million owed to

European member clubs . “There are oldco debts to certain clubs

and it’s not inconsiderable, it’s about

    £3million,” Green said.

“It’s been accumulated as part of the

    historical baggage. They’re oldco debts

that newco has got to face up to.

“This is the frustration that we have had

as a group where, at times we’re newco

so we have to sit in this particular box,

however when it’s convenient we’re still

oldco and we have to suffer the sins of

    the fathers.

“I want to say to these clubs and UEFA

we’re here for the long haul – we want

to be honourable and we are people

who face up to responsibilities – but

we’d like some help in meeting these

    debts.

“We don’t want them to be waived or

expect them to be waived…(but) I’d like

for clubs and UEFA to recognise these

are not my debts. This is a gesture and

(we’d like them) to work with us so we

    can amicably agree a settlement.”

I can tell you the owners of Livingston fc are absolutely delighted to see the rotten mob in the lowest tier of Scottish football. There was a personal vendetta against Livvy by an SFA employee, a bitter hun who knew of one senior Livvy employe’es leaning towards a Glasgow team (the team who pays their way).

I hope that SFA mongrel is still crying into his cornflakes this morning.

I read this morning that the Transfer Embargo, if agreed by Sevco Scotland Ltd FC, it will commence on 1st September – meaning Sevco Scotland Ltd FC will be able to sign players up to that point… ie, the end of the transfer window.

How is it a punishment that the transfer embargo only kicks in when the transfer windae closes?? Does that mean every team in Scotland is being punished as well give we can’t sign any players on 1st Sept either?

  24. twists n turns on

It would be hard to envisage inflicting any more misery on the dark side followers. Surely Celtic couldn’t twist the knife further by reaching the group stages of the CL? Could they? :-)

Surely we won’t draw the bankrupts in a cup competition and batter them 7-1 setting a record score between Celtic and newco that will stand for eternity? :-)
