Dundee and the heights of Scottish football history

834

Congratulations to Dundee FC who return to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time in seven years.  Back in the 60s Dundee were a top European team.  They won the league in 1962 and in the preliminary round of the European Cup they trounced West German champions, Cologne, 8-1 at Dens.  Cologne put a more respectable face on the aggregate result two weeks later, winning 4-0 in front of 40,000 fans.

Dundee went on to beat Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon 4-2 on aggregate in the first round proper, this while Portuguese runners-up, Benfica, retained the European Cup only five months earlier.  If the Cologne result was the most enduring in the collective memory, the 4-1 win over Sporting at Dens was one of the all-time great results in Scottish football history.

Anderlecht were next victims, losing 1-4 in front of 65,000 fans in Brussels before the fairy tale ended in the semi final against eventual winners, Milan, at a packed San Siro.  A Wembley final against Benfica was Milan’s prize, a tie Dundee would surely have fancied.

The result against Cologne is historically the most impressive but this was not the case at the time.  This was a period before the Bundesliga when West German teams participated in regional leagues, with the winners playing-off to enter the European Cup.  Once German teams were able to join a financially prosperous league instead of being shackled by historical custom, they never looked back.  Dundee, like all Scottish clubs, are disenfranchised from the history they could be creating by the poor value of their TV market.

It’s time for a change, not just for the sake of Celtic!  If only the guys running the show knew the history and heritage of the team promoted today, or believed in the potential of Scottish clubs.

  1. I think Sevco fans need to worry even more considering Walter (no, not that one!) Mitty is now running the club.

  15. I’m pretty sure they went straight in and clocked up the record for the worst point total ever by a ‘British’ club.

    They got humped 4 – 1 twice.

    From the Guardian

The most comprehensive thesaurus in the world would barely contain the words to describe this Rangers performance. The latest evidence that Scottish football may be in terminal decline rather than just suffering a rough spell arrived on another harrowing night in Glasgow.

Rangers had the luxury of a one-goal lead against Unirea Urziceni and passed up a penalty at 1-1 before collapsing to arguably the most eye-catching effect in their 53-year European history.

“It is a big low point for me and that is before I have even sat down and had a think about it,” said Walter Smith after his 72nd match as a manager in Europe. “We lost 4-0 here to Juventus [in 1995] but they went on to become the European champions. I don’t think the penalty was the turning point of the game. You shouldn’t defend as we did at any level of football.”

Smith, amid a trophy-laden career, cannot have suffered a more wounding night. No wonder his demeanour was one of shell-shock in the post-match media conference. As Pablo Brandan’s deflected shot secured the visitors’ fourth goal, 25 minutes from time, blue and white scarves rained on to the Ibrox track. Those supporters who remained until full-time, albeit they admirably applauded the victors from the pitch, did so to make their anger perfectly clear. Unirea, in truth, could well have scored more.

“If we qualify for the last 16, this will be an historic victory,” said Dan Petrescu, the Unirea manager. “If we do not, this will just be another memory. I expected more pressure from Rangers in the second half, after we scored our second goal.”

And yet, it had all started so brightly for Rangers. Pedro Mendes watched his 18-yard shot loop off Ricardo Gomes Vilana and into the Unirea net within 90 seconds. Rangers displayed little early evidence that they regarded this as anything like an onerous task, Kenny Miller coming within inches of condemning Unirea to a miserable night nine minutes later with a header, while Steven Naismith missed an even more clear-cut chance.

Petrescu, renowned as a calm full-back during his time at Chelsea, cut an agitated touchline figure but was soon placated as Marius Bilasco slotted home an equaliser.

Steve Davis promptly wasted the opportunity to reinforce Rangers’ superiority as Bruno Fernandes handled a David Weir header. From the penalty spot, however, Davis allowed Daniel Tudor far too simple a save.

Unirea set the tone for what was to come, three minutes after the re-start. Fernandes, earlier a sinner, had the audacity to offer a back-heel which took a deflection off Kyle Lafferty on its way into the Rangers net. The home support, not fooled about the quality of this opposition, could not hide their disgust.

As Lee McCulloch followed by heading Tiberiu Balan’s free-kick into his own net, Ibrox descended into further uproar. Brandan then scored the fourth, his 30- yard shot flying past Allan McGregor after clipping Naismith.

And so the debate returned to just how far and fast the mighty in at least one half of Glasgow have fallen. Unless there is a turnaround of quite epic proportions, the most immediate drop will be, at the very best, into the Europa League after Christmas.

    +++++

I posted a few days ago that last season’s Scottish entrant to the CL would have received €16.675m from simply reaching the Group Stage; no points necessary. This comprised the basic participation payment and market pool payment. Chuck in another few million euros from the gate receipts another couple from picking up a few points and possibly more from participating in the Europa League or CL knock-outs and it’s a hefty wedge altogether.

I don’t know how much more the payments for this year will be, but suspect that the participation and points money will remain static, with the market pool again increasing, which should be worth around €11m alone.

An awful lot of money to be made from the CL if we get there, possibly worth around €25m all in.

  23. It’s a pretty difficult situation to be in for Charles Green.

On the one hand he want’s to be able to say “None of these debts are mine, all I’ve done is buy a stadium and a training complex”. On the other hand he needs to try and keep hold of the fanbase by trying to maintain some link to Rangers(IA).

If he was really serious about starting a new football team (he isn’t). He’d be far better off selling the assets to developers and building a new more appropriately sized stadium eslewhere and forgetting all about the past.

  25. The Battered Bunnet on

The purpose of the requirement to provide three years’ accounts is largely a risk mitigation measure. The Governing Bodies have a responsibility to their members to ensure that they individually and collectively are not unduly exposed to commercial risks associated with the financial failure of one of the competitor clubs.

Indeed, the requirement is not for 3 years accounts alone, but for 3 years of unencumbered trading history, demonstrating that the applicant’s business model and management are appropriate to the scale and nature of the environment in which they play.

The requirements become greater as the level of competition increases, bringing with it increased commercial impacts, and indeed, increased risk to the structure of the relevant competition that may be realised in the event that a competitor fails financially.

Equally, the requirement to disclose the beneficial owners of a club is also related to risk. Clubs trade together, and again from a risk mitigation perspective, it is important that clubs know who they are dealing with, cf Craig Whyte-Hearts-Lee Wallace.

It appears from comments to date that Sevco does not satisfy the criteria to hold SFA membership in its own right.

Paradoxically, it does apparently meet the criteria to hold the SFA membership formerly held by Rangers, should the SFA decide to transfer that membership. (When someone explains this logically I will eat my bunnet.)

The SFA, in considering transferring RFC’s membership to Sevco, wishes to protect the game and reassert its authority. It seeks to protect the game by demanding the football debts attaching to RFC’s membership are settled by Sevco, total around £3M we understand.

The authority aspects relate to outstanding disciplinary cases against RFC.

The simplest solution to all of this, Risk and Authority, is to require Sevco to pay a part-refundable fee to the SFA in exchange for a new membership, part of which fee pays RFC’s legacy football debt, the remainder of which held in bond to offset any financial risks in the absence of the necessary trading history, and refunded at the conclusion of 3 years unbroken participation.

Authority can then be reasserted by progressing the various disciplinary matters that will inevitably result in RFC being expelled from the SFA.

This route is a more satisfactory one for the members of the SFA as a whole because the Risks associated with a Sevco membership are as great whether they hold RFC’s old membership following transfer, or hold a new membership in their own right. By holding a 3 year bond on the new membership, risk is reduced and governance principles satisfied.

All provided Charlie Green will disclose who owns Sevco, of course.

    What’s the hold up?

Voila for 20 odd quid you have CCTV which is a fraction of the price of the dedicated stuff

  28. Monsieur Charles is a louse divided against himself. If it’s the paying public asking if his club is Rangers, he says, “Aye ready.” If it’s the football authorities, he says, “No way.”

He can’t have it both ways.

And in all of this, the massive tax bill that they have just shuffled away from gets forgotten. It’s like that bit of the saga never happened. They need reminding every time. They racked up millions in tax debt and refuse to pay it. They are not even trying to pay it.
