Dundee United 0-1 Celtic

940

Celtic did enough in the opening 16 minutes to put this game beyond Dundee United but only managed to score once, an excellent effort from Gary Hooper, before United tightened up and made a contest of the game.

Georgios Samaras sprung past the United defence inside the first 30 seconds and squared the ball across the six yard line but Stokes arrived a split-second late to convert. That signalled a period of relentless Celtic pressure as the home team found it impossible to get out of their own half or hodl any kind of possession.

Gary Hooper controlled a long clearlance inside the centre circle on 12 minutes before knocking the ball square to James Forrest, who had space to exploit.  Forrest drove forward before returning the pass to Hooper inside the box.  The Celtic striker turned outside Gunning before driving a shot low inside Dusan Pernis’ right had post to open the scoring.

Celtic continued to press forward with Forrest again involved in their most dangerous moves.  The young winger threaded a through ball to Anthony Stokes on the edge of the area before racing past the defensive line to meet the return pass on the volley but his shot struck Pernis.

Give-and-go football was proving effective for Celtic and on 41 minutes Cha Du-Ri played a one-two with Forrest but could not convert his shot.

Celtic were so dominant in the first half their only real concern must have been why they were not further ahead but the second half proved to be more of a contest.  Dundee United’s passing was poor all afternoon but Celtic slipped to their level, frequently succumbing to unforced errors.  The visitors were never in any trouble defensively but Neil Lennon decided to shake things up in midfield, and substituted central defender, Glenn Loovens, pulled Victor Wanyama back and brought Scott Brown into midfield.

The subsequent change, bringing Ki on for Stokes gave Celtic more athleticism and meant that the final few minutes, which are often tense when defending a one goal lead, were contested almost exclusively in the United half.  Fraser Forster had a few catches and the odd punch but had a relatively easy afternoon.

i like the wording on all the reports about the Aluko dive

“The penalty was awarded by referee Steve Conroy when Rangers were already a goal up, ”

as if the big point is not the dive but “rangers were already a goal up” is the main point here

as if the dive would only matter if it was 0-0 or 1-1 but with them “already a goal up” its not that big a deal

the only word missing at the end of that sentence is Timmy.

primarily Aluko but the ref should get an Oscar for the sincerity with which he blew his little whistle – at the order of his masters weaving their dark magic in the shadows of Mordor.. :)

  5. If Dodds had said Aluko had cheated then I may have given him some credit.

A man with nae eyes could see it was a dive ffs

  6. The Idiot.

The referee should be questioned as to why he gave that penalty.

I know it might not be popular on here but Billy Dodds has always given what in my opinion has been fair and balanced analysis. He is one pundit I would always give an ear to.

Apart from today when he was joking with his best buddy in real life (Coorslad) I haven’t seen Vmhan call anyone a Hun on this blog.

As a matter of fact He is more likely to give anyone a chance rather than jump on the HUN some do and I include myself in that.

Fair play to Dodds for saying it was definite simulation. McLean trying to say the ref might not have had a clear view………whit?

Conroy has single handedly changed the shape of the top of the premier league by two points and should never referee another senior game again.

I don’t get to many games….. don’t get to enough games. Managed to get tickets and sat (quietly) amongst the Utd fans today in stand opposite main stand. The outstanding memory is seeing the Celtic support in full voice – stunning. No words can honestly and accurately describe the the sound and sight: unique and breathtaking. Utd fans around us had their phones out recording the huddle. There truly is no-one like us……what a wonderful and unique spectacle. Cant imagine how uplifting it must be for the players and management.

  24. Bedtime story to all you bhoys:

lifted from thick young on the bbc website (I know but the headline caught me)

“It’s the truth, isn’t it? Right now, Celtic are a better team, with a deeper squad and I’m not doubting for a heartbeat that my pre-season forecast about them winning the championship will be – and yes, it is a rarity for me in this respect – correct.

Ally McCoist has produced a remarkable performance in securing some kind of insulation for his dressing room from the machinations of the boardroom where Craig Whyte has admitted – as was claimed in a BBC documentary – that he was indeed disqualified from acting as a director for seven years.

Even the club admits there is a “dark cloud” hanging over Ibrox. And it’s getting worse. They will be needing umbrellas in the Blue Room soon.

The worse this gets, the nearer we sail to the transfer window; the bigger the question mark over the tax liability, then the more the minds of the players will drift to what happens next.”

And we all lived happily ever after. Thanks thick.

Sweet dreams, goodnight and God Bless.

  25. Hamilton Tim,

Yes I did thanks, & thoroughly enjoyed it.

My son got me one via his supporters bus.

The only time I was at all nervous, was when the players were doing shooting practice before the game. Hooper in particular was very poor, and people in the stands were on high alert.

However, once the game started it was come the man, come the hour.

Motm , for me was Wanyama, and shoreline flattered the opposition

  26. The huns have been under pressure in the last few games and the referees in this country are giving them a helping hand because there confidence would’ve been low and that pen proves it.

We need to keep an eye on this because they will gift decisions to them and remember wins give you confidence and the refs in this country are defo helping them to gain momentum again.

I make no apology about going back to the topic of Socrates.

I wonder what Platini, The SFA and the Scottish Government would make of such an intellectual beast in their midst?

Sure, he played the game like an artist and had skills which most footballers could only dream of. But what would they make of Socrates the man? How could they cope with their anti offensive, anti political footballing rules with such a guy playing today at the height of his pomp and powers?

What would they do with a Socrates who appeared with ” No to Sectarianism” or ” No to cheating refs” or some such other message on his shirt?

Here was a guy who persuaded a whole team to sport shirts which not only spoke against policy but against Government itself. How on earth would you silence such a guy?

I also think of the mercurial Dominic Rocheteau of the same era. He was labelled as extremely political and very much of the left with his mebership of the League Communiste Revolutionnaire, yet he went on to become president of the Ethics Commision within the French Football Federation.

These guys are true heroes to me because they played the beautiful game the beautiful way— but they also had a voice and were not afraid to use it in support of justice and a just cause.

I am also attracted to the fact that they were great individualists and perhaps just a little barking…

We need more of their ilk in this drab corporate world of wannabees and chancers.
