Dunfermline debacle caution ahead of Motherwell

996

Do you remember the game after the Cluj Champions League debacle last August?  Of course you do, you are still chasing the cold from you bones, it was a League Cup encounter with Dunfermline at Celtic Park, where the Championship club took the game to extra time.  The game, the only domestic cup tie in 34 games we have not won in 90 minutes, was six minutes from going to penalties before James Forrest settled things.

I don’t know what happened in the dressing room between Cluj and Dunfermline but I cannot imagine it is a happier workplace this week.  This is Celtic and everything goes on the line every game.  Let’s not have a repeat of the Dunfermline performance.

I know a few Motherwell fans and they are unanimous in their praise of David Turnbull, their star 21-year-old midfielder who joined Celtic on a reported £3m deal yesterday.  Turnbull originally signed for Celtic in June last year, before failing a medical.  A knee operation, and the best part of a year in recuperation, saw him clinch his dream move yesterday.

The question now for the manager is, how does he shape his midfield?  Therein lies the answer to our season.

Welcome to Celtic, David.

  1. Bossed by Rangers? Yes. I agree. That’s how bad we are at the minute. The fact so called lesser teams weren’t bossed by Rangers helped us win the league. It certainly wasn’t us bossing Rangers

  2. Albert Einstein would have been a shit fitba manager … many football managers do the exact same thing over and over again and expect the same results …. that’s why so many get the sack … and then get re-employed because they think they can do the exact same thing over and over again and expect the same results …. canny think of many (if any) managers that have actually changed the way they manage ???

  3. Cluj who knocked us out of the CL last season had a fraction of our budget, so much so that the whole of the Romanian first division had less of a budget than we did, to lose to a team with that size of a budget is a sackable offence in most of the football world, only a couple of days ago we were knocked out by a team that has less than 20% of our budget and yet again we have a bigger budget than the whole of the Hungarian first division, again in the football world that should be a sackable offence, we are not getting bang for out buck, far from it, we are throwing money down the drain to beat the band, the problems start at the top of the tree and work their way down, as I said earlier, John Kennedy will be our next manager, that is a plain fact.

He is everything that the head honcho wants, everything and more, especially since he will cost less than Lenny.

  4. TET

Cluj got pumped out of CL the other night as well … I think it’s called football

Do we now just count pounds & euros ?

I hate Celtic getting beaten but my first reaction has never been … “we have more money so we should win” is that really your first thought when we don’t win ?

  5. Julliene and Ajer have been rag dolled by lone strikers this season. If it continues we have no chance of the 10

  6. GFTB

Pedro does and that’s all he cares about, and yes, to lose to a team that have a fraction of our budget is a disgrace, it shows how unprofesional the club is….IMO

  7. Covid is focussing minds everywhere. A terrible game of pass the parcel is now taking place. Many people are wondering if they will be ‘left holding’ when the music stops & the economy falls off a cliff.

    Serious Question:

How many Celtic players’ heads are ‘in the fast lane, dreaming about the big juicy salaries in the EPL?

When heads are turned & there is no crowd, performances like Wednesday, Kilmarnock & Dundee Utd, are bound to happen.

Well over 50k have bought VSTs – most I posit, will see no live action at Celtic Park this season. If the squad & management continue on this present trajectory…..and if two, three, or, four top players leave in September, how many will be queuing-up to buy next season’s version of the VST?

Empires usually implode prior to losing their grip – our latest ‘winning empire’ has lasted almost ten years, are we witnessing a muffled, yet, unmistakable implosion?

  8. Roofe and Witten(sp) will have a field day against Julliene and Ajer unless something changes. Too often we’ve seen both our central defenders being outjumped for knockdowns in our box

  9. TET

I have never cared much for any of the board in any season

TET sleep well … ma wee yin was having a clear out the other day and putting a stack of books into charity shop (now they are open) I heard her saying “mum not that one that’s the lady from CQN” … mon the gargoyles :-) hope that makes sense :-)

  10. 31003 11.51pm

Is this based on Roofe & Itten having a field day at Ibrox against Killie ??

Or what is it based on …

  11. GFTB

No. It’s based on the form of our central defenders not Killies

    Thought I’d explained that

    Read my previous posts

  12. You want to argue for arguing sake….or do you really think Julliene and Ajer have been defending well?

  13. We cant compete with spending more than our opponents so lets cut our spending and see what we can do.

We need change top to bottom. Good night.

  14. For what it’s worth, and I’m not a big fan of it, I would try zonal marking. Watching our defenders running toward one guy the other night and leaving our goalie totally exposed was hard to watch.

  15. 31003

No arguement here but can I ask what you base your opinion on Roofe and the player you don’t even know what his name is … Julienne & Ajer aren’t as bad as you make them out to be or as bad as maybe you would like them to be … Celtic are going through a wee wobble no need to hang every player out to dry … but if you think they are all so bad … you have every right to criticise … shoorly am allowed to think you are so far off the mark … CQN goes into overdrive when Celtic don’t win … and many many posters probably want to post more … but there are one or two who either will never be happy and even more then one or two who actually enjoy being unhappy :-) And some even enjoy Celtic stumbling .. it usually starts with … “I knew this ,..” I like Neil but he wasn’t my first choice” .. the new one is “Aye, he lost the dressing room at Hibs” … away an gie me piece … his precedessors before done heehaw in Europe … some fans crave Seville 2003 and St Martin (we won heehaw that year) i wonder what the sane fans would say if Neil got is to losing a Europa final and losing the league … would you feel the same as 2003 and would you give Neil the same adoration as Martin ??? Just ask yourself that question ….

  16. Was chewing the fat with my dad tonight for about 3 hours looking for answers to our problems and we got onto the subject of corners for. Now apparently we had 17 corners on Wednesday and didn’t threaten once.

My dad when he was head of youth at Falkirk said the late great Tommy Burns came to do a coaching seminar and got half an hour to chat once it finished.

One of my dad’s bugbear back then was not producing enough at corners and asked how much time they allowed to work on them.

Tommy said ” they are international players so we let them do their on thing”

Now that would seem fine to me if things were going well, however that’s not the case.

What I see when i watch Celtic lately, are a team who look under prepared , under coached and who could certainly be fitter.

  17. The players at our club are sound it’s all about coaching, putting them out in the wright formation and telling them what they have to do, there just looking for leadership

  18. GFTB

Ok. Point taken. I don’t think for one minute that people criticising Lenny and the team want them to fail. And I don’t think you do either. The frustrating thing is we KNOW they are good players and that they can have off days, but, when so many are having off days…continuously….then even you have to admit that something isn’t right…and that either change of tactics or personnel are required

  19. SFTB 12.25am

Seemingly Roofe wants to keep the Roffe top for luck … I could believe that but would that pass the SFA registration :-)

We know how tight our authorities are on proper registrations

  20. A question to ask is….this team were far far better last year compared to this. What’s changed?

  21. 31003 on 28TH AUGUST 2020 11:36 PM

You wrote ANY team could give us a game now.

Do you include Hamilton and Rykavejik ?

They lost 11 goals between them to us [5-1 and 6-0]

We will be playing plenty more teams of the same ilk this season……It is not all bad…just saying

  22. 31003 12.34am

Neil is there to be criticised by team selection and tactics … I hate the ports going for our manager … I can not argue with posts about team selections and tactics … no striker the other night annoyed me as much as you … but some of the vitriol towards somebody who I think wants the same of us … it’s no nice … argue all day or disagree about the fitba … I still think our manager put good enough players on the park to win the game … but I always think that :-)

  23. Sid 12.32am

Firstly … ya jammy bam … you can still discuss Celtic with your old man :-)

All kidding aside even though we sometimes go off the rails and enjoy a wee conversation … next time your talking to your Auld man ask him if these days it’s all tactics or can just normal fitba instinct survive

I certainly look forward to our next conversation :-)

  24. 31003 on 29TH AUGUST 2020 12:37 AM

Not at this point [last season]we weren’t

We just got shown our arses at parkhead by Cluj in the champions league qualifiers…then went on to need extra time for a very fortunate league cup win against championship Dunfermline.

Perhaps we will pick up again this season like we did last season.

  25. Lazydynamite

    Hamilton and Reykjavik

World beaters with a minute fraction of our resources

But then again….Killie, Ferencvaros and Dundee Utd with a fraction of our resources

  26. Paris St German and Barcelona showed us what to do against teams with a fraction of their resources

  27. 31003 12.37am

    What’s changed ?

    Your now having a laugh

We are going into September after months of a global pandemic having played very little football … and you ask what has changed … no wonder you don’t rate our Neil :-). Maybe get a grasp on reality before fitba

  28. Hungary also have Covid-19

I wondered how long it would take to blame something else. Like I said…..blame anything or anyone bar those culpable

  29. 31003

Nobody said Covid didn’t effect Hungary .. you asked what has changed for this team … you aren’t posting about the Hungarians .. if you don’t think “this team” have been effected that’s fair enough … your comment “I wondered how long it would be before somebody blamed Covid” was obviously set up by your question … sometimes some posts are so transparent :-)

  30. GFTB, Lazydynamite

    It’s been a pleasure

    Bedtime for me

    We can cross swords later

    Goodnight

  31. GFTB

Hope everything has calmed at the school and you’re well apart from Wednesday obviously.

One of the criticisms I’ve seen of Neil is that he is on record as saying he’s not big on tactics and not big on data and stats.

I think he’s too honest with the press for his own good because imo its not a good look.

All the top clubs in the game are big on tactics, stats and data, it works otherwise they all would not be doing it.

Hope you noticed i never called for the manager to go but i have big fears with what I’m watching.

Neil’s strengths are in man management, before replacing him I would be sourcing Europe for the best coach available. He certainly needs help imo.

I agree that both Ajer and Julien are good players who are going through a rough patch and calls for them to be binned is nonsense.HH
