Dunfermline debacle caution ahead of Motherwell

996

Do you remember the game after the Cluj Champions League debacle last August?  Of course you do, you are still chasing the cold from you bones, it was a League Cup encounter with Dunfermline at Celtic Park, where the Championship club took the game to extra time.  The game, the only domestic cup tie in 34 games we have not won in 90 minutes, was six minutes from going to penalties before James Forrest settled things.

I don’t know what happened in the dressing room between Cluj and Dunfermline but I cannot imagine it is a happier workplace this week.  This is Celtic and everything goes on the line every game.  Let’s not have a repeat of the Dunfermline performance.

I know a few Motherwell fans and they are unanimous in their praise of David Turnbull, their star 21-year-old midfielder who joined Celtic on a reported £3m deal yesterday.  Turnbull originally signed for Celtic in June last year, before failing a medical.  A knee operation, and the best part of a year in recuperation, saw him clinch his dream move yesterday.

The question now for the manager is, how does he shape his midfield?  Therein lies the answer to our season.

Welcome to Celtic, David.

  1. lets all do the huddle on

The talk about Lennon’s appearance and speculation over his health is quite Hunnish imo.

    —-

    c’mon

i thought cqn had dispensed with those completely meaningless comments like ‘hunnish’ and ‘hun like bahaviour’ aimed at a fellow poster

its just an excuse to use the hun word against someone on here cos you know its the last thing they would want to be associated with

if you have a counter arguement to whatever the point was then make it

    if not then scroll on

its a cheap shot and says you dont really have anything to offer to whatever the discussion was and can only try some abuse

you need to aim higher than that

    Oh dear.

No one speculated about Neil Lennon’s heath.

    I spy strangers.

There has been a lot of anger expressed toward the team and manager and board after Wednesday , understandably so. Much of it directed towards performance ,tactics etc. Many of the comments on Neil Lennon’s demeanor and physical appearance were ,to my reading , made out of concern for his wellbeing .

Giving it further consideration, ‘H’ should proceed your ‘D’.

    You’ve been rumbled..

  5. Can I state that before wednsday I was saying why is big tom not played more regularly as he is a stand out in comparison to the rest.

  6. I always ‘suspected’ that Paul McStay was denied the oppertunity to play past 31-32 because of the ‘medical’ treatment he was in receipt of at Celtic Park,

An incredibly skillful player like McStay who was never graced with amazing pace should have been an incredible asset well into his 30s.

We all know he completely retired through an ankle ‘injury’ in 1997.

I believe at the time he stated if he didn’t retire he might not be able to walk in the future.

I have no insight ,just a theory.

Was looking forward to his book which never happened decades ago and failed to launch a couple of years ago.

The recent KT injections stuff kind of reminded me.

  10. So we’re not supposed to criticise the manager because he has won a few trophies.

A manager who on Wednesday repeated the same mistakes as last season against Cluj.

Who thought we played great on Wednesday.

That great that he through the players under the bus. He must have also missed the 2 goals we lost .

He needs to go now and be replaced with someone who has some tactical knowledge of the game , as he obviously hasn’t

  11. I expect there will be a gentleman’s agreement that Turnbull not play this weekend.

I would like to see a fresh face or two in the starting eleven. Two up front would be nice.

  12. Just watched the news there

2500 fans getting into the Brighton Amex stadium, which has 30750 capacity’ for a pilot event tomorrow

  13. Sorry,I am not buying this crap that Lenny was out thought on Wednesday. They had a couple of greyhounds up front, that any team would find difficult to handle, but after a nervy start we outplayed them, out thought them, had them on their knees.2 shots on target the whole game they had.Not many more attempts. We had umpteen efforts, bad finishing, bad shooting,a few wrong choices by players,in vital moments, let us down. Not Lenny. How can youblame manager for a guy missing a tap in.A linesman for not giving a goal,A player a couple of yards away from team mates ,on the bye line, and hitting the ball behind them, just how is that the managers fault.Lenny has been criticized for playing Christie as striker,on Jobos best player awards,he came second. Not for me,but how fickle are fans.

Far too many who did not want Lenny to get the job, their heads full of Media crap, now coming out of the woodwork to gloat, and call for his sacking. In this season, !!!!!!!!!?No chance.

  14. We all demand that the manager comes out and say something after a defeat or dropped points. We dare him to say anything other than the vitriol we are all feeling about the team’s performance and if he says anything untoward or mildly exculpatory or self-serving, we are all over it. We did not really have listening ears on anyway- we just want him to say something wrong so that we can vent the anger that built up watching a dire performance.

If he does not say anything obviously wrong, we will use the techniques of Barthes and Lacan to parse every sentence and interpret what he was really trying to say. If that don’t work body language and gossip are Plans C to Z.

Now, I am prepared to concede that Neil’s interview was unhelpful, but so what. Any damage is not irreparable. Tosh McKinley and Henrik had a fist fight and all survived to play on. There is always tension and undercurrents between players and manager and beteen player groups and player groups. Show me a competely happy squad and you’ll be showing me a group that has just won something and forgotten all the bad stuff that preceded it. And the self-proclaimed “all happy” willl not be speaking for those who resent their failure to be selected and played in the winning event being celebrated.

I cannot remember any memorable post-match interview that wasn’t just comedic (Keegan’s “I would just luv it” rant). We put a mic in front of an angry manager whose just lost a big prize and we expect measured statesmanlike language. I’m surprised more journos don’t get the Jim McClean treatment in those circumstances. After the game I was learning several new languages because I’d exhausted all the swear words I knew in the languages with which I was laready familiar.

I am scratching my mind to think of anything memorable Jock Stein ever told me after a defeat and I am coming up with nothing.

I do remember a memorable angry outburst from Alex Ferguson, a successful manager after a Cup final win for the Dons against the Huns, where he tore into his own team for complacency. Pundits trying to sort their cognitive dissonance in resiling the contrast between a healthy win and an angry winning manager, tended to praise Fergie for making sure his team never relaxed. Meanwhile, in the dressing room, after the interview, Fergie was quietly apologising to his team for his temper and it wasn’t till years later that Fergie publicly admitted he had been in the wrong and was just in a bad mood and indulging himself. The Pundits who said it showed his genius, had painted themselves into a corner and had to continue to proclaim that it showed Fergie’s Machiavellian side when it was really just his Elizabeth Violet Bott side that was to the fore.

The fallout from WantAwayGate is just a 48 hour water cooler conversation. Just like Love Island and Britain’s Got Talent, it is a topic of debate with absolutely no importance attached to which or whose side you are on. It is heat without light; words without meaning.

And like Love Island and Jock Stein’s many post-match interviews, nobody remembers what the fuss was about weeks , months and years later and nobody remembers what the issues were.

Meanwhile the players and the manager move on to the next game. There might be a clear the air meeting and there might even be an accelerated departure but the sheer weight of games to come concentrates the mind and occupies the energies.

Having said that, God help us all if we don’t beat Motherwell.

  15. ST TAMS

Just what mistakes did Lenny make.As far as I could make out,it was the players who made them.Around 75% domination of the game,28 attempts at goal, they had 2.

Just how did Lenny get it wrong?Hysterical nonsense.

  16. I’d have more respect for Lenny if he had admitted he effed it up rather than the players. Even if he had said it was Lawwell fault. Out of position players and no striker. It’s always someone else’s fault.

“…Rangers have a series of renovations in the pipeline ahead of their 150th anniversary celebrations in 2022 and the Edmiston House project is at the heart of the grand proposals.”

    from glasgows evening newspaper

they barely lasted until their 140th anniversary

but why let facts get in the way of pandering to you core readership

  19. When Rodgers walked, the board had 3 months to do due diligence and select the best candidate. Peter sat at the front of the bus and chose the safe pair of hands. Peter knows Neil’s limitations but pressed ahead anyway. Our board went out on a limb for Neil and it’s cost many millions. Its not Neil’s fault, the board appointed him and simultaneously failed to implement an effective recruitment strategy. Our exit on Wednesday is on the board 100%.

My biggest concern now is that Neil seems unable to win a match against opponents with resources that are similar to ours or better. Forster was a great equaliser but is now gone. Bossed by Rangers, send packing by Cluj, Copenhagen and Ferencvaros. What next?

so if you are saying we are a europa league side then i totally agree

that is our level at the moment and looks like it will be for the foreseeable future

and i wouldnt complain about that

would rather watch us beat lazio in the europa league than get pummelled 6-0 off of psg etc in the championsl eague

  22. 31003,

Just what players were out of position?Christie up front? That’s it.He plays a guy not fit,or a guy learning the role,or Christie. His tactics not too shabby when his gamble scored, and missed an open goal.If Christie scores,Lenny is a genius, getting a result with no striker.FFS,if he played Klimala and got beat 2-0,how would that go down.

  23. Comment of the week

    “bossed by Rangers”

    :-)

Hilarious … if anything in the last decade never mind under Neil’s tenure I would find the most ardent Hun to actually say that … never mind take the time to actually write it or type the letters

  24. David 17,

Sorry,”Bossed by Rangers”,would that be the team that were 13 points behind us,not won a trophy because we win them. That Rangers?

The Copenhagen duffers that took Man U to extra time in the quarter finals, losing 1-0.

You seem to be another that for some reason thinks we are much better than we are.

We win some in Europe,we lose some. Its where we are now.No right to be beating the teams that beat us.Sadly,most,50\50.

  25. Turkeybhoy

This “not match fit” is a smokescreen. Always has been.

After buying Ajeti the first thing I’d be doing is getting him “match fit”

I’d be saying I need you for our Euro tie so I need double training sessions off you. I want you and Klimala up front. Even for 45 mins. These guys are athletes remember. To not do that and play a midfielder up front instead is criminal. But c’mon, it’s not just that game. We were dire against Killie and Dundee Utd. We are a spent force. ANY team can give us a game now. Lenny and Kennedy’s one dimensional “tactics” have been sussed.
