Dunfermline debacle caution ahead of Motherwell

996

Do you remember the game after the Cluj Champions League debacle last August?  Of course you do, you are still chasing the cold from you bones, it was a League Cup encounter with Dunfermline at Celtic Park, where the Championship club took the game to extra time.  The game, the only domestic cup tie in 34 games we have not won in 90 minutes, was six minutes from going to penalties before James Forrest settled things.

I don’t know what happened in the dressing room between Cluj and Dunfermline but I cannot imagine it is a happier workplace this week.  This is Celtic and everything goes on the line every game.  Let’s not have a repeat of the Dunfermline performance.

I know a few Motherwell fans and they are unanimous in their praise of David Turnbull, their star 21-year-old midfielder who joined Celtic on a reported £3m deal yesterday.  Turnbull originally signed for Celtic in June last year, before failing a medical.  A knee operation, and the best part of a year in recuperation, saw him clinch his dream move yesterday.

The question now for the manager is, how does he shape his midfield?  Therein lies the answer to our season.

Welcome to Celtic, David.

Must admit I did not see the use of that particular phrase. That said there were more than a few inappropriate comments relating to our Manager. Never realised there were so many clinical, forensic even, Psychologists operating in this dear green place. Maybe studying on the quiet.

  2. Someone made a comment the other day “we are a well run business but a poorly run football club”

Hits the nail on the head.

    Who will play up front?

It is weak, and it will be read that way in the dressing room.

It’s as if he still has no idea what a can of worms he opened with those statements.

Two players are already agitating to get out the door, and that’s within 24 hours.

If he selects them he’s an absolute mug.

We’re in a lot of trouble here.

  9. The lights are unlikely to come on, given past experience. Sadly. He is a fine guy but a poor manager.

  10. Christ…

Pop away for a bit. Few folk who’d rather avoid contributing to a decent debate today but rather focus on my prose it seems. No swearies that they seem to let pass by but a reference to that toxic behaviour that one day scolds the kids and the next is all over them with praise. No emotional intelligence. No balanced outlook.

Of course if I’d used the phrase to conform to their way of thinking you’d hear nothing.

FFS. I can see your game.

  11. James Forrest,

I agree fella. That stuff is a reality of every team (players moving on) and should never have been said publiclly. Emotion kicked in on wednesday and out he lashed out of embarassment for his own poor performance.

Should have closed it out today with no comment, kept it in house and put less pressure on himself.

  12. Rock Tree Bhoy on

Having given it a lot of thought since Thursday morning I’ve come to the conclusion that’s its not the defence, midfield, strikers or our board, thats the weakest link, its the first team management

Unfit, unmotivated players, playing unmotivated players who want away, playing players when clearly they need to be dropped (Forrest), lazy, unfit, unmotivated players in a team that passes the ball back and forth for an eternity without actually going anywhere,

    who’s fault is that?

    clearly I’m talking this season,

if sevco ever get their act together, and there are signs that this could be happening, then I’m afraid this could be the season from hell,

as the old saying goes if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and walk like a duck, then its a duck.

Not sure that particular phrase contributes a whole lot to the debate.

  15. Celtic Mac – I let them pass me by – what he looked like, how fat he has got, nothing to do with me and them.

How he acted post-match is clear and cut. Moving from anger and calling their professionalism out to stroking the players met the simile I put in. You’ve put 2+2=5 but frankly, those leading on it (and I’ve spoken a lot today) to cling onto that speaks volumes for their motives.

I think some people secretly wanted Neil to fail so they could say, “I told you so…I said when he was appointed…blah, blah, blah.”

He took us to 9 and hopefully he will complete the job this season…

As regards Europe, there’s a new/different reality coming our way…I’m not sure what it is but…

  18. Lenny should not play Ajer or Ntcham on Sunday. One month of the window left, and both want out.How much will they be trying to avoid an injury. If Christie is of the same mind, leave him out.We have Biton,Turnbull,to take their place. If a bid had been made,I would be fine with that, but they have just given permission to their agents to hawk them around.Apart from the two mentioned there is Soro,Connell, desperate for game time, and I take it Rogic is fit.Bloody Prima Donna’s thinking they are better than they are.Take the money

I hope we have told their agents its 20 million each.

  19. WEEBOBBYCOLLINS:

So Celtic fans, in the ten in a row campaign, WANT the manager to fail just to give themselves … bragging rights?

How’s that going to work out when they come up against beaming, overjoyed, delirious Sevconuts?

Did you think much before posting that, or was it a Lennon-style lashing out in the heat of the moment?

  20. Thanks Gene. I’m not into denigrating our manager as a person.

If it added fuel to those doing that openly then I wouldn’t have used it in hindsight.

  21. If you are a manager of a team, and all you get is constant rumours, requests, hints, agents ,hinting that players want to leave, how would you react.Who knows how long the club has had to put up with this, especially Lenny.

He exploded the other night, fair play to him.All of a sudden, the place is full of Lenny haters.Whatever he does,he is damned.

From the admittedly little I’ve seen of Luca Connell, he looks like a cracker. Good vision – defence splitting pass – get him in.

Soro looks to have a wee touch of the headless chicken about him (reminds me of Tomas Gravesen), but very early days.

Of those on the fringes / new – I’d get Turnbull and Kimala in as soon as possible, and as often as possible. Kimala has obviously done a lot of work, looks rapid, and has a good goalscoring record. Didn’t notice Turnbull until he was quoted for us last year, but have been really impressed with what I have saw over past few weeks – again, imaginative passes into the box which we need to get through packed defences.

Europe matters to some of our best players and their development and for that reason we should qualify to keep them in our grasp. That’s what worried me first when the final whistle went on wednesday.

nobody hates Neil Lennon – we all love him and want him to succeed – I’m old enough to remember wee jinky being moved on – everybody adored him – nobody wanted him to go – but unfortunately everything has a shelf life – not saying Neil’s time is up – but it might be – recent events have convinced me to keep an open mind

The reason why I thought your ref to abusive step dads was a disgrace was because it is exactly the sort of thing a hun troll would have put up and giggled about with his sevco pals (ie I just went on a celtic blog and accused their manager of being a child abuser and got away with it!)

    Hello lads

CQN came up in conversation a moment ago, which reminded me that I have been a bit remiss about emailing some of you from here ..so, this is a bit of a group apology, and a general ‘I hope you are all well’ to all of you on CQN.

    TH … just saw your 3:23 post…

I have never understood the ‘good business/bad football thing’…..

firstly, PL has done nothing but pick low-hanging fruit. What do we compare his accomplishments to? …. and related to that…

most importantly, we are a football club ..a car business that sells shitty cars will eventually go out of business …. our football is poor… eventually, even with the most ardent supporters, that will wear thin….

For me, CL provides so much money compared to the domestic game, that is where we need to be …. and given the relative advantage that our status and support provides, making the CL at least every second year should be the bare minimum of what a competent business achieves… and we aint close to that ….

as this article from the Harvard Business Review suggests, there is a good reason that many companies replace their head guys every five years or so ….

Stop allowing Hunspeak to live rent-free in your head fella. I’m no hun troll. No interest in their sick minds.

I can’t be judged by your warped thinking mate.

Give people the benefit of the doubt.

  32. I’m concerned Lennon is trying to convince want away players of the glories of the ten – if they don’t get it by now , they should leave. I’m ok with players having desires to take their game and family elsewhere, I’m also ok with players not having the same passion as us and Lennon for the 10 – JUST LET THEM GO.

This year will be a battle – when it matters we need players who will bust a gut – these players won’t do that (Ajer and Christie excluded)

  33. I am not going to rubbish Lenny, but his time has gone. Comments after Dundee Utd game & after Wednesday night were not rational. To play without a natural striker was unfathomable.

This is a football department problem and has nothing to do with upstairs. Going back to Ronny’s time through to Cluj, Copenhagen & now Ferencvaros, we have had ample opportunities to succeed all CL qualifying ties from winnable positions, but threw them away.

A finger has been pointed at certain players, probably four – there will be no good outcome. These days players are easily insulted and run to their agents for solace.

Has this squad now come to its natural end? – I’m afraid it has. Ferencvaros was there for the taking, yet in the end one ball over the top killed us.

Hate to say this, but Sevco, with their style of play, would have hammered the Magyars.

Rebuilding enthusiasm & playing style will be hard – doing it in empty stadia, probably impossible.

Our Scottish players seeing their contemporaries Armstrong, McGinn & Tierney leaving the Scottish game for the riches of the EPL, have had their heads turned – with McGregor & Christie it’s only a matter of time. Ajer, Ntcham & Eduard are sought after, Covid may have made them impatient now. They may all go in September – will Lenny?

Over at Ibrox our disarray will have been noted – they will look to present a united-front. They will be emboldened by our unconvincing & stuttering start to the season. 10iar now seems less exciting & less achievable.
