Egregious interpretation of the rules

258

A year ago, after a late 10-man winner against Dundee United, we gave ourselves a platform to go top of the table next time out, a status that was earned and not relinquished.  Yesterday’s win against Dundee United was just as ominous for those hoping to get the better of Celtic.

15 games remain in the title race, Celtic have 7 away from home and 8 at home, where we have been imperious all season.  Bookies are offering a 4% return on money placed on Celtic, although the period required is less than a year, that is below interest rates.

It took until early in the second half, and we benefited from a goalkeeper error, but the incessant pressure from Celtic was always going to find whatever vulnerabilities United had.  Aaron Mooy’s speculative cross looked harmless until Jota seemed to defy the laws of physics to bend the ball over the line.  How many players get to see a goal they scored when looking back onto the pitch?

Despite having a pretty good view of the action, referee Don Robertson failed to spot Kieran Freeman raise his hand to block the ball inside the United penalty area.  Freeman quickly hid his arm behind his back, so perhaps Robertson believed the player only had the one upper limb.

VAR corrected this aberration.  Despite the clear hand-to-ball action, the referee declined to caution the already-booked player.  Your thoughts may return to the caution Alexandro Bernabei received when the ball struck his arm, behind him, mid-jump, and wonder why the gaping inconsistencies persist in Scottish football.

Do not trouble yourself with that.  Also, set aside any thoughts you may have that the punch on the head Kyogo received was worthy of a penalty.  Instead, consider the new rule.  If you stand on the ball and fall, you receive a foul*.

Liam Smith stood on the ball, tumbled, obstructed Reo Hatate and, according to Don Robertson, earned a foul.  It was an egregious interpretation of the rules which highlights the scale of the challenge we face.

*may only apply when playing against Celtic.

Whether it was the weans that call themselves the ‘Green Brigade’ or other members of the away support, yesterday’s childish tiresome songbook at the start of the match only emphasises the fact that we have a not inconsiderable number of clueless a#seholes attaching themselves to the club.

    =============================

Oh thats a wee attention seeking post.

Slating other Celtic fans as weans.

I am not a member of any grouping, never have been, going to see Celtic is enough for me.

Songs of ireland,be they “good ol friendly IRA songs” who killed and maimed folk OR “the bad IRA songs” who killed and maimed folk have been sung since GodSaveIreland was sung leaving St.Marys Hall in 1887

Are you suggesting Celtic ‘hibs it’ and assimalate.

HLS Celtics irish identity is there from its very origins.

Some like you who describe those as weans who sing songs of ireland, dont forward a debate at all.

  4. The penalty could have gone either way. The ref had a clear view of it and he must have given it based on the fact Kyogo got hammered by both the keeper and the defender. The fact that he felt the keeper punched the ball after he watched it on playback really should make no difference as there’s nothing there that warrants changing the decision he made. It was dangerous play and Kyogo could have been badly hurt.

  6. Superbru update

Round 29 saw a close run thing but we got a clear Yellow Cap winner

    1st- Pannysbhoy- 9.5 pts

    2nd= Auldheid- 9 pts

    2nd= One Malloy – 9 pts

There were a lot of low scorers but no-one could deprive McCaff of the wooden spoon as he earned 1 solitary point.

Overall, our top 3 remain the same with:-

    1st- A thing of beauty- 140 pts

    2nd- Leggy- 131 pts

    3rd- Ayrshire Tim- 128.5

We now have 44 of our starting 68 on over 100 points and I’d expect a few more to get there by midweek.

At the bottom of the overall participants list , we have:-

    Scaniel on 70 pts

    Park Road67 on 71 pts

& McCaff, thanks to this week’s score – on 71.5 pts, so it’s all to play for on the very competitive wooden spoon front. Remember – the winner gets a genuine wooden spoon, worth at least 99 pence, from Morrison’s.

Our next deadline is the Ross County v Hibs match tomorrow at 7.45 pm, followed by 5 more fixtures on Wed. 1st Feb, including the mighty Hoops against Livi and Minis v Zombies all Kicking off at 19.45

    Good luck to you all

Whilst it may not be the all of the GB singing the repulsive songs that were being belted out yesterday they don’t exactly sing many Celtic songs when we are playing at home do they?

    ——

“Oh aah up the raa” is what I heard during the game. What were the repulsive songs you refer to?

  11. AuroraBorealis79 on

Onenightinlisbon, need not reply as I have seen your later comment regarding Davies Cooper & Walter Smith. If songs are being belted out regarding the dead, then I totally agree that it is unacceptable, shallow & repulsive

  12. glendalystonsils on

Would like agree with those who reckon we could widen the gap on Wednesday but Hertz seem to reserve their least , er , ‘effective’ displays for meetings v their big cousins . That’s even without the customary input from refs and VAR.

Beating Livvy is all that matters . As games run out and the gap shows no signs of closing , the pressure on the poor wee entitled peepul will be too much for them .

  13. Weebobbycollins on

MNCelt…”…Kyogo could have been badly hurt.”

Come on! It’s a contact sport, players get hurt sometimes. At least Kyogo showed a bit of bravery. Well done to him!

  14. Weebobbycollins on

I see the masonic Stuart Dougal has been defending William’s decisions. Creep! In fact two creeps.

  15. Tom McLaughlin on

Looking at the replay from behind the goals when Reo hits the post, the ball rebounds to thr right of Kyogo about 3 yards out. As Kyogo manoeuvres to slot the ball home, a United defender grabs him by the shoulder and drags him to ground.

    A stonewall penalty.

  16. Contact sport ? he was jumped at, with a push from the defender, and punched by the goalkeeper,

Here is the rule – What results in a penalty being awarded?

Deliberately touching the ball with a hand or arm (other than the goalkeeper)

Careless, reckless, or excessive use of force to charge, jump, kick, challenge, push, strike, or kick an attacking player.

    Holding an opponent.

Spitting at or biting an opponent or official.

As a former speedy wee winger myself (ha) i always found that goalkeeper thing of coming out and jumping with knees up to hit the challenging attacker (a mcgregor favourite) and the two handed punch while traveling forward as being reckless and dangerous.

The goalkeeper is off the ground and travelling with speed, and out of control of the impact.

Two fouls not one, I am gob smacked as to why people think it is not a penalty, it take Neil McCanny type mental gymnastics to say it is not.

  17. Weebobbycollins on

In fact, you could say, according to the photo, Kyogo is holding Smith’s arm. So, a still image doesn’t tell the whole story. And anyway, it’s all about opinions. Big Derek Johnstone said that.

  18. Doesn’t matter how many Dearie me’s it’s still not a penalty.

A goalkeeper should command his 18 yard box, that’s what I want our keeper’s to do

The decision was the correct one.

  19. would you be happy to see your kid challenged like that by opposition players if it was a youth match ?

  20. Weebobbycollins on

But it’s not a youth match. it’s a match between grown men, adults who train every day with other adults. BTW…Which hospital was Kyogo taken to?…lol

    ONIL

take your point on DC and WS,i wouldnt label anything Celtic fans sing as pathetic, thats your own bias coming through and does not go near, anywhere near, why such songs are sung? And it does nothing in response as to how we can eradicate them, educate them out.

I was watching at friends tv,i didnt hear the above.but i am not looking out for anything.

Same point to you as to HLS re ‘As for the IRA,move on’

    To what? To where?

Fluffy ballads with genocidal connotations like The fields of Athenry or

More straight to the point songs about state violence inflicted on irish people.

Whatever we sing of our heritage is not liked imo ONIL.

    It never has been accepted

    It never will be accepted.

    So move to what exactly?

Hope all good mate.i understand not all songs do not make all Celtic fans(like yoursel) happy, the question is how do we get active get in about it,say and educate it out.
