GIAKOUMAKIS MYSTERY

ANGE POSTECOGLOU admits he’s in the dark over Giorgos Giakoumakis’ transfer situation.

The Greek international striker was missing again from the Celtic matchday squad for the third successive game when the champions beat stubborn Dundee United 2-0 at Tannadice last night.

Giakoumakis, 28, who knocked back an enhanced contract from the club in November to trigger intense speculation, also sat out the 4-0 league win over St Mirren and the 5-0 Scottish Cup triumph over Morton with the frontman linked with moves to the States and Japan.

THE LAST HURRAH…Giorgos Giakoumakis steers in the second goal in the 2-0 Viaplay League Cup win over Kilmarnock which could turn out to be the Greek’s final strike for Celtic.

Asked for an update on the player he signed for £2.5million from Dutch side VVV-Venlo in August 2021, Postecoglou, speaking to the Scottish Sun, answered: “It’s still in the balance.

“There are only two days to go and Michael Nicholson’s not taking my calls any more, so I’m not really sure what’s going on in the background.

“I assume everything will be resolved in the next couple of days.”

Giakoumakis is under contract to the Parkhead club until June 2026 and his most recent suitors have been J-League outfit Urawa Red Diamonds and MLS club Atlanta United.

The Scottish transfer window closes tomorrow at midnight although the cut-off for deals varies in different countries, including America and Japan.
