Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

Fully agree ……when the share price drops to certain level, the institutional shareholders will QUICKLY sell the assets and then liquidate sevco …….. Well, that’s what I’m hoping anyway ….LOL ….it’s all good news anyway the share graph is like the white cliffs of dover….

    Sevco shares,

sleekit Dave King is lurking getting people to buy for him(allegedly) to have a say in the future of whatever ruins is left after it has been stripped to the marrow by those that have their claws in just now.

Chuckles and crew will probably sell to anyone other than him as there is still plenty to be made by the spivs, e.g rent it back to them for as long as they want at a good profit sevco has still to be passed about the spivs for a while yet (IMHO).

When someone decides to leave any place of work his head is already out the door weeks before he is. He won’t give his full effort in case he injures himself and scuppers any potential move.We have enough quality in the side to get through to the CL proper.

If Sevco have been exonerated by their independent (ahem) investigation into themselves and has in turn been rubber stamped by the SFA. When does Green get to start back in his old job or does he sue?

Green couldn’t wait to get away auld big hands will come back fill his pockets say thanks to the orcs for his retirement fund donation and off he’ll pop never to be seen again and the orcs will love him for it, you couldn’t make it up HH

  5. If we get 5-7mill now for Hooper then sell, if it’s only 3-4mill then I’d keep him until January. EPL teams panic then and will pay us a few mill.

Don’t agree with the posts about Hooper’s head not being in it last season or now, if he stays he’ll still score more than any other in our team.

  9. EDB/Corkcelt.

The lower share price will show that they are in difficulty, and institutional backers will bow out if they see the bath coming.

    That is not my point.

There is a battle for control of Newco coming.

The Blue Knights have not gone away.

We have seen several examples of Greens spin via PR to try and hold the share price ,and several leaks from his enemies that were intended to reduce the share price,so that they could gain control at a cheaper level.

The Newco will eventually ,be purchased ,by a mixture of more longer established Oldco devotees.

Green is trying to get as much as possible.

The potential new owners want the same implosion that Corkcelt hopes for.

    Not for me .

I am happy for Green and his parsimonious ways to exist at Newco.

Murray was recently made resign because he was spending all the cash, bringing another doomsday.

Green ousted him to protect his investment long enough for him to sell out at a large profit.

Newco will have to survive under Green ,but they have no money to invest.

No matter what ,there will be a buyer for the company carcass.

I want them t have to pay. Fortune to get it.

I am only saying that it is worth a punt on keeping Hoogr at least to see us through UCL qualification, the old tried and tested. I believe we have left iy too late to bring a new striker and yip we will need to perm any two from Sammi, Tony or Stokes. Balde is sn unknown quantity and would be on the bench for me. If we kept GH it would give us another option and he could put himself in the shop window.

Getting back to Hooper, although I say it is worth a punt, I qualified it by saying nobody should moan in January if he leaves. However, I am in your camp, personally, I would hsve sold him in January past. Wrong decision to keep him for Juve game with promise of Summer move. GH would have got to go to a Club that would be handy for him, for personal reasons, he would get to play in EPL and we would have got £6 million. Perhaps that’s why his form dipped.

Reading between the lines GH has had his sights getting a club situated geographically to where he wants to be and playing in the EPL. However, this has fallen through as no EPL Club will meet our valuation, that is why in my opinion negotiations have taken so long this week as GH sees himself as a an EPL Player. The only thing QPR offer is they are close to where he wants to be.

    Keep the Fait!

    Hail Hail!

  13. Good draw for us today i reckon, but i go with An Dun’s caution from earlier citing the helsingborg game.

A great victory, but we could have been 4 or 5 down at half time due to dodgy defending and a decent opponent.

We will face the same standard again so nae complacency from the bhoys…

  14. I doubt that Elfsborg are of the same standard as Helsingborg, while I also fully expect we are paying a large % of Bangura’s wages….so no way will we pay him to play against us.

Onwards & Upwards…team will be fitter & better by the time Elfsborg games come around

no worries for me home or away. We play – we win…dictate the game.

  15. TinyTim

In your opinion, what are the chances they will have another Adimistration in the forthcoming season (20% 50% 80%)?

  16. Tiny Tim, Big shareholders will not be fooled into selling below value despite what spin The Blue Knights or other circling vultures may put out. At the end of the day Accounts will have to be published, and its on the basis of the Balance Sheet that the true value of the Company and by extension the value of the Shares will become evident. I too have no problem with Charlie escaping with his saddle bags loaded, but they as a Company will either prosper or fail. If they prosper their Share price will reflect that and rise, equally if they go down the tubes their Share Price will fall.

Your goosed mate, cracking site was there two years ago but unless they put it on in tbe site’s bar there are no pubs handy, you’ll need to travel a few miles to find a pub. I do recall a pub at the road that takes you to the Holy Isle but was not in it, couple of miles away.

Interesting take on things. Do you believe the blue knights have the financial backing to buy Sevco and invest in the club’s future ?

From what I remember of Rangers’ demise was that the blue knights really struggled in terms of gathering up the asking price of the assets.

I was told in May 2013 ,that they wouldn’t last another two and a half weeks.

I was told this by a very eminent source who frequents this parish.

Someone who is much better informed than me.

    He has real quality contacts.

    I waited with baited breath.

    I’m still waiting.

I personally believe they won’t go into admin whilst Green has shares to sell.

Then it will depend on who buys the controlling interest,as to how they refinance them.

If they continue with their current business plan they would eventually go into admin before the end of the season.

But in answer to your question ,my personal view is nearer to 20% chance.

There are buyers waiting on the correct moment.

If I were buying it would be after an admin process, however competition could make you move sooner ,rather than risk losing the deal.

The real players have still to make there move.

All pure speculation on my part(:-)

  25. I agree with Tiny Tim. There are 2 types of buyers for Sevco.

Those who want to make money out of it. That would be the likes of Green and Whyte.

The second group are those who want them to win trophies. Eventually, folks like these will end up as owners.

Their intent will be to throw as much cash and debt at the first team squad as they can. The more they have to pay to buy the club, the more difficult it will be for them to do this.

    Just my penny’s worth.
