Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

  5. @TransferScoop: Danny Graham has joined Hull City on a season-long loan. #safc #hcfc

I would have been happy to see him with us for a season. Loan deal would have been perfect. Give us money to still buy another striker aswel.

if I have read and counted the graph on the official website, there are just over 300 season books left for sale, taking away the huns visiting allocation I make that over 52k sold quite astonishing,

  7. @Valentinesday

NL had already shared his thoughts on Mo playing in today’s press conference.

He will be advising him not to play.

  8. Kayal seems to come in for a lot of stick on here of late, a little unfair IMO. He seems to be trying too hard to get back to where he was before that atrocious tackle from that clown Jig or whatever they call him.

Kayal was doing well until then. I for one hopes he gets back to the form we enjoyed and progresses on from there.

  9. @Valentinesday

NL said he will be speaking to him in person.

If he goes against his manager’s wishes then I’m not sure we could do anything about it.

    I don’t think he’ll play.

  11. SPF,

Don’t see how he can go against his current teams wishes, Celtic made a rip roarin one here and are now trying to compromise the player, acting like armatures.

  12. Do UEFA have any rules regarding

    conflict of interest.

Is a player owned by a club allowed to play against that club in a competitive match.

It could open up a right can of worms with all sorts of allegations being laid.

This is a general point and not specifically relating to us and Bang Bang

It’s a big year for Kayal with Victor gone.

It would be great if he could step up and cement his place in the midfield.

On Hooper.I do not think there is anybody likely to pay £3/£4 million in January for him as he will only going to have 6 months left. Only Clubs likely to bid that are those fighting relegation. I were Hooper and I did not get my move this window, I would not want to go to a Club fighting relegation and would pick my Club when I was ready and run down my contract.

As I have posted before we are caught between a rock and a hard place. If we are going to maximise Hooper’s value, now is the time. I think the Club are aware of that hence the delay in a deal being concluded this week. Hooper himself will have a big say in this.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

I’m not sure if the SFA are obliged to be transparent. They have stated that they are but for it to be incumbent it would have to be in their articles of association.

Having said that I’m reminded of stumbling across a statement about transparency that if it is in their articles makes incumbent right, but then I’d add a reference to the article. In fact just say contrary to Art etc.

My problem was the other meaning of incumbent as in terms of being a holder of an existing post and I was trying to fit it in to that meaning. Others might do the same.

I have an idea where I saw the reference but its on my laptop and I’ll look later.

  20. Great to see so much fitba talk on the blog today.

Additional to a striker and a midfielder, I would like to see us signing a left-back.

Competition would be good for Emilio and I really don’t like it when Charlie plays there.

  21. A poster mentioned on the blog that Bangura began his career at Celtic with a long term injury – par for the course for new players who sign for the club.

Gary Hooper also missed for quite a lengthy period through injury when he first came to the club. It’s the same story with our new Dutch central defender.

Bangura never seemed to settle after his injury problems.

  22. Auldheid,

I’ll drop it then, I was sure any organisations in reciept of government funds had a responsibility to be transparent, is that no the case ?

  23. If Tito Vilanova’s illness has returned my thoughts are with him and his family.

    Puts everything else into perspective.

Did you receive my shareholder information, which I sent by email to: canamalar@gmail.com on 10 July – I didn’t get an acknowledgement?

May I suggest replacing the word “incumbent” with “existing” in para 2, and possibly the word “compliance” in para 4 does not add anything and could be removed? Also, further down is it worth considering rewording the statement to read that “we request the Board to call for a full investigation by UEFA”, rather than ” Will the board join us in calling…”. Sorry, can’t help my OCD…!

Regardless, I fully support your very important initiative.

I agree with corkcelt to a degree

If the fee for Hooper at the moment is around £4m, I would keep him with the cast iron guarantee he can walk in January for a token – if any – fee

I would rather rely on G Hooper winning games to get us into the CL than spend any transfer fee we get for him and have a replacement take 3-4 month to settle

Just to but in where I’m not needed.

Given that private businesses can apply for Govt grants, I don’t think there would be a case for complete clarity of all their doings.

At best they’d be compelled to respond to a FOI request about use of the funds granted.

  27. Keeneye: Charles Green now listed as having 1.5m fewer shares than yesterday, suggesting it’s his shares being sold.

The mob who took over from Cenkos have moved the goalposts.

  28. Rocket Man……… Agreed, you could also say it’s thankfully a Rangers free zone of late.
