Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

  1. Friesdorfer,

Sorry if I never got back I will do, thanks for the input, yer right, I was thinking it was a bit cluttered.

Sorry mate but I took it corkcelt was suggesting keeping him and selling him in January for £3/£4 million, personally I cannot see us getting that in January. However, if he meant as you suggest punting him for a nominal fee or nothing and keeping him until we qualify or in an attempt to qualify, I too would keep him. If we do keep him I hope others realise we are unlikely to get a return for the £2.5 or £2.75 million we paid. When I say a return I mean in transfer fee as we have most certainly had a return for our money.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  3. To sell or not to sell. If Hooper does not go in this window, and even if he runs down his contract, can we not retain him for the rest of the season? If we want to do anything in Europe, I would be far happier if he were still our player.

You going to Blantyre tonight bud?

    I can’t make it tonight :((

  5. If Hooper is the difference between qualifying for the Group Stages then the CLmoney would recompense us for any drop in income between now and Christmas. It would be a gamble but we are financially strong it might be worth a punt to hold him, if his head is in the right place..

I don’t think it’s a gamble on our part. It’s quite clear that we have set a price for Hooper in this window and that if its met, well so be it( dependent on Hooper accepting terms). If not, I assume the business plan has taken account for him going for a small fee or hee haw.

I say play him next week if he’s fit.

The most important issue “is his head in the right place????”

I agree that we should keep him and hope he scores the goals that keeps us in the CL.

Would he then be cup tied to us in the CL? So he will still be looking at a struggling EPL team in January.

  8. Canamala1, just in, yes i back you in your quest for answers and accountability. I can’t be any clearer….

Yes that’s what I thought corkcelt means and that’s why i only partially agree wi him

If for whatever reason GH stays we will only get washers for him

My argument is that if he helps get us in CL we can afford to write off the loss of fee wi approx £10m CL proceeds because looking at potential pot 3 sides I think we have to consider that finishing 3rd may even be a push this time and there won’t be £15m on table

I thought Chuckles shares were tied in for a set period- the same as other major initial investors?

  11. Squire Danaher, we got £31m from CL last year roughly (take out first game for season book and last 16 and we are still well in the money). I think if we hold onto him and his head is right and he fires us to group stages he will have succeeded enormously. So in January if he has done well and scored goals £3-4m is peanuts for EPL clubswhen you consider what they will lose if relegated. I just don’t think he wants to stay and is not sure of where to go!

  12. stairheed…,

What about the transfer embargo, I bet you thought that was for a year too :o)

  13. Doesn’t look good from a corporate investors perspective when CG has changed companies having been tied in till xmas with his shares, looks like he’s possibly grabbed the last parachute….if the info coming through is correct. From being lauded as the establishment business football club to Del Boys in a few short years. Their credibility with the city, investors, shareholders, creditors will be in the gutter.

  14. viewfaethewindae on

Offer Hooper a great wage, 1m bonus if we qualify for the C.L. and a 6m sell fee, everyone wins??

  15. Celtic will face the winners of the tie between Elfsborg or Duagava Daugavpils in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League should they complete the job against Cliftonville this coming Tuesday.

Neil Lennon´s side hold a 3-0 lead from the first leg in Belfast, thanks to goals from Mikael Lustig, Georgios Samaras and James Forrest. And the Hoops will be confident of progressing.

The draw for the next round of the competition was made this morning, and Neil Lennon’s side could travel to Sweden or Latvia. Their first leg tie in Sweden finished 7-1 in Elfsborg´s favour, with the tie to be concluded this coming Tuesday.

The dates for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League are scheduled for July 30/31, and August 6/7, pending any fixture changes by UEFA.

Should Celtic progress on Tuesday night against Cliftonville, tickets for the home leg of the third qualifying round will be made available to supporters immediately after the final whistle. Further details on fixture dates, venues and kick-off times to follow at CelticFC.net.

  16. Forest make bid for Wilson- is Billy “the swinger” for real!!! Wtf he punted Wilson into reserves after xmas derailing his own sides promotion effort, got the sack (or in depending what context you use it in) and enables the dead team to win the league.

I’ll make sure I get it back to you – is the home game the 30/31 dates?

  18. squire danaher 17:49:

I agree I just hope there are those that do not slate him for running down his contract or going for peanuts or if as some have suggested that he may lack ambition going to a Club fighting relegation even if it means us netting £3/£4 million.

As I have said, we do not exactly need the money and if his head is in the right place, it is worth a punt keeping him.

    Keep the Faith!

Not if the service company decide otherwise. Spivs about to have a field day.

Said the other day I was told all the pre contracts will be getting ripped up also.

  22. Just my humble opinion but if Hooper’s head was in the right place he wouldn’t be seeking a move.

He needs to move on for everyone’s sake.
