Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

That is a good resolution, my friend, and poses and interesting question or two.

There might be a word or two I would tinker with personally, but that is just personal preference.

Re the negotiation of the television deal, I wouldn’t read too much into that myself. Celtic had to be at the vanguard of that negotiation. Peter Lawell would rightly have been hung drawn and quartered if had allowed media rights to be negotiated 4 other chairman.

While Sky may have dictated terms, it was essential that Lawell was there to represent the interests of the shareholders and fans of the biggest club— to leave it to others would have been firm cause to give him the sack! Further he has to be at the forefront of any discussion between the clubs as to how they divi up any such sum — basically you wouldn’t want to trust some of the others to make a fair distribution!

  3. Liam Boyce looked like a talented striker who was head and shoulders above the rest of Cliftonville (and that was looking out of shape). He’d add something to any SPL side.

  5. Paolosboots,

I don’t think I’m misrepresenting you, you say I’m right for trying but you’ll only support if I win, then rather than accept my lighthearted plea for you to correct yourself, youve decided im wrong for having the temerity to point it out, if you support the proposal it should be irrespective of achieving the goal.

The “incumbent” bit is not clear to me. How about

“directly contrary to what the SFA themselves have declared in their 20/20 vision mission statement in terms of being a respected and trusted organisation”

I do not have date to hand but I think that at the very time the SFA were saying that they were a respected and trusted organisation in their publication they were acting in exactly the opposite way. I would love to hear them explain that away. Google SFA 20/20 Vision and you will see the section I mean.

  16. Saw Lenny was saying hopefully we will have Mulgrew, Ledley, Matthews & HOOPER back and available for the Elfsborg game. If an available Hooper was the difference between reaching the Group Stages or not, then we would make more by holding him and punting him for 3 or 4 million at Christmas. No way should we sell Kelvin or any other player, we don’t need the money we do need players we can rely on.

  18. BRTH,

That was the raw version there were a few wee refinements and i have since thought about further refinements.

I have been looking at the 2008 club licensing system and it appears any investigation is required to stretch back that far.

Had a wee chat with Auldheid about it who seems to think the wee tax bill was not subject to the 2008 requirements, I differ in this as the bill matured in the last century the only discussion going on was about the penalty, so the fact that the hun never declared it and the SFA never properly audited their application or followed the requirements of 2008.

The sanctions for not declaring were in the hands of the SFA, not paying the bill was not, they should have been denied the license.

But again I’m not going to get lost in that detail as that will give the lawyers what they need to dispute and dispute is delay, innit.

Anyroadup, give it a tinker and post it, lets see where it goes.
