Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

  1. I asked the guy in Nardini’s for jelly and ice cream last night and he just looked lost.

  2. The Boy Jinky on

    Lenny bhoy

I dont wish to see hooper in our shirt again. His hearts not been in it for ages and I would rather take £3m and let watt stokes balde and newbhoy fight for goals.

  3. News from Sweden, as expected, Elfsborg have reacted to Lennys statement.

Bangurra is our player and will be playing, end of story.

The Bhoy expected much bigger clubs to come in for him.

He expected to ATLEAST double his wages.

He and his agent have thought that they held all the aces.

He thinks he is too good for Celtic.

He is about to make a huge mistake.

He will never again play for a club the size of Celtic.

His pumpkin will be hollow from now on in.

He should just look at Scott McDonalds career since he moved.

If newbhoy doesn’t shape up we could try newman, junior and triallist. They’re all experienced players having played for hundreds of clubs over many years:o)

  6. Also Bhoys.

The Newco share price dropping is BAD news.

I want the share price to remain high.

    Charlie to make a killing.

That way Next owners will have to fill Charlie’s pockets and have less left to invest in the Newco.

    You know it makes sense.

Just had another read of the draft resolution: may I offer the following:

“1. Qualification for and issuing of license to operate.”

“2. Secret cross governance agreements, contrary to fundamental transparency requirements.”

“3. Unprecedented and unconstitutional transfer of membership to a new entity, to the severe detriment of existing properly registered and licensed clubs.”

“4. Extra-regulationary participation in domestic football competitions without proper registration.”

“5. Wholly untenable participation of the governing body in an inquiry for which they were the appellate authority.”

    Statement below para 5:

“These serious concerns have not been allayed by any subsequent statements or actions, which appear designed merely to placate. On the contrary, they have created a deeper mistrust of those charged with the administration of rules fundamental to the integrity of sports governance, to the extent that many believe that our club – and others – have been financially disadvantaged through decisions made by those trusted with the governance of the game.”

“We request the Board to call for a full investigation by UEFA into the administration and implementation by the SFA of the compliance requirements for participation in association football in Scotland.”

“We further request the Board to inform shareholders in writing within 1 month of this (these?) resolution(s) of the actions taken in response to these resolutions, and the reasons for such actions.”

Apologies for wittering on, just got on a roll there! These are only suggestions and I will certainly not take any offence if you decide otherwise. On, On, as they used to say in Hash House Harriers.

As ever nothing I could disagree with. You have to wonder at the proportion of good advice given out by agents versus the nonsense that they fill a player’s head with.

Money and more money and even more money. Agent speak. Very sad and as you say GH will never again feature in a CL game. But he’ll have loadsda money.

was keeping an eye of season ticket sales myself . anything over 50k season books will make up for the discounts and more bums on seats will improve the atmosphere and make money in spending in the shop/ bar etc… everyone’s a winner and I hope to ghod the club see the good sense to maintain lower prices for the supporters.

on hooper, sorry bhoys don’t trust him to preform and we cant afford any passengers for what will be tough C/L qualifiers. I’d sell him for anything over 4.5 million and play Sammy and/ or another

Good to hear from you. We’ve exchanged chat over a number of years and I’ve never doubted your Celtic supporting credentials tho more than a few have.

My lovely daughters are travelling to Sharm El Sheikh tomorrow for a relaxing break leaving me to rampage aboot the hoose with our wee dug Robbie.

The naming of the dug has nothing to do with Keane or the singer laddie Williams but is to do with Mr Coltrane as the wee man’s pedigree name is Whyncraig Hagrid so my wife immediately hit on Robbie.

    She was a clever woman.

    Hail Hail to you.

I remember listening to that cup final on the old cat’s whiskers.

Well the second half as they didn’t allow the full match to be broadcast in those far off days.

Somehow it seemed so much more exciting with the likes of Raymond Glendinning doing the commentary.

Eamonn Andrews used to do the boxing commentaries before the box took over from the crystal sets.

Hooper: I don’t think he’s naíve or misguided, I think he knows what he’s doing.

We all have different priorities and ambitions. For some footballers it’s to play at the top level, for others it’s about the money.

Maybe he harbours some vague notion that if he can prove himself south of the border then someone bigger will come in for him, but I think probably in his heart of hearts he knows that when he ñeaves Celtic, his CL days are over and that he’ll never play in the NouCamp again. He’s chosen the money.

If I were his wife/girfriend/mother/sister I’d be gutted at his choice, but it’s HIS choice.

Ah, that’s me on leave for 3 glorious weeks………

Why the heck have we heard nothing from BDO or the HMRC appeal…!!!???

  21. We should have enough to see off Elfsborg though I do have some awful memories from our defending against Helsingborg last year. Fingers crossed, we’ll get the job done.

Sad news about Vilanova if true. I wish him all the very best, a gent.

Just seen Sevco share price, holy moley they must be in awful shape. Did someone get a peak at the unpublished accounts !?

  22. Tiny Tim was saying he wanted the Sevco Share Price to remain high to make it more expensive for new owners to buy in. It doesn’t work that way, for the most part the Share Price will reflect the true value of the Company. If they are going to go bust like the previous Club their Share Price will continue to plummet. We can only guess as to how bad things are but the big share-holders know, therefore the big trades may well tell the true story. For me I want to see their price coming down, down down.

  23. If Sevco have been exonerated by their independent (ahem) investigation into themselves and has in turn been rubber stamped by the SFA. When does Green get to start back in his old job or does he sue?

  24. waht a glorious night in leafy Lanarkshire….been a mad week.

Spent the mid week in London and was surprised to find the Hoops game being shown in a favourite watering hole of mine.

Had arranged to meet up with ex colleagues for a session at Bradleys Bar off Oxford St at 6.30 and was resigned to following game via the phone other members of party included a wee die hard bluenose who last year was very aggressive about the Sevco revival , changed his tune now. Anyway session started early for me the, 30 degree heat had ensured a powerful thirst so I got tore in early doors. As the company gathered, we were stood outside , I went downstairs to use the loo and was met with a crowd of Celts from England, Ireland and Scotland all enjoying the match. I was” well lit” so probably made litttle sense but it was good to hear that the manager was a confirmed Celt who would ensure our matches got shown, more power to him, his magnificent jukebox and selection of beers. It just mde the pub an even better option for Lodon visits.

If any CQN lurkers were there , I apologise for my incoherent ramblings , drink had been taken.

Gary Hooper ? I met an ex team mate of his from Scunthorpe last year and he could not speak any more highly of him as a man and a footballer. He told me the deal Hooper had signed with us, Gary did not disclose the deal , the agent did to try to secure more business from other players. The fellow said Gary had more class than that. I wish him well , remember that he has fought back from career blows in the past so he is now maximising his earnings when he is in the spotlight, who among us would not do the same.

I only trust we have a replacement lined up, bit sad that Russell did not sign for us.

With respect to you sir I know TinyTim to not only be a good Tim but a successful businessman doing well in a difficult time.

Bert Trautmann – played on after a tackle which broke his neck.

*Bert Trautmann is the reason I have always had a soft spot for Man City, after hearing about his exploits in the final I took a closer interest in them, they also had one of the Hibees Famous Five, Bobby Johnstone playing for them plus a young Don Revie who brought the deep lying centre forward to the British Isles which had been pioneered by the Hungarians, it became known as the “Revie Plan”.

He brought his “plan” to the national side in a game against Scotland at Wembley, the home side won 7-2.
