Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

    of doubt.

  2. tbj,

It was hardly a favour, it was a business arrangement which we should have covered in the agreement. It’s no their fault we underestimated their chances.

  3. Football is a funny old game (cc) no matter how piss Mo is or people think he is, football gods always like to play out their games. So even if Mo’s leg dropped off as he walked onto the pitch no one is betting against the ball bouncing off his nose into the net :o)

  4. Greensideup is also Neil Lennon

Having read Neil’s comments, I’m a bit disappointed in him. The line about Bangura’s best interests sounded a bit Tony Soprano to me. Hopefully he rows back from this and we concentrate on the reds next week.

But im a man of, err, principles!

    So he no playo…

Unless they stick him in goal!

  7. Hypothetical situation

Bangura puts two past his own keeper while defending corners and misses two open goals at the other end……how would uefa look at that?

  8. Bangura would be guaranteed to score against us if he plays ala Haraald Bratbaack and countless others who have come back to haunt us.

That Neil Lennon made the correct decision in sending him out on loan?

I think every bit of the information on there is fake

  12. Ibišević hope we don’t touch him – another rehabilitation project.

Beginning to get a little suspicious of the number of players that we bring in on ‘trial’ – then offer them the opportunity to resurrect their careers etc.

How many of them have been out of the game for a period due to; cruciate/ ligament type injuries? How many players do we bring in that end up going through a protracted period of injuries during their first season with us?

Apart from Hedman (as the GK) – we could probably have fielded a ‘treatment table 11’ at any time in the last 3-5 years.

Ibišević is another guy who spent over a year out with a cruciate injury. Purchase price (risk) is too often reflected by the medical history.

71 goals in 168 Bundesliga goals over a 7 year period is a great scoring return, especially when 5 of those seasons were with one of the league’s smaller clubs. 1 goal in 2 for Stuttgart in last 2 seasons suggests he’s still improving.

Would Hooper score that many in a league of that standard?

    I didn’t say celtic did them a favour. .

But if you remember. .. we originally loaned him to stockholm… then elfsborg. Aek complained as we decided not to extend the original loan and give him to their rivals.

Sure were paying a percentage of his wages … and we will have a clause about pulling the deal .. although apparently not one about playing against us.

My solution. .. if he plays… rough him up from the kick off.

  18. tbj,

“If someone asked you a favour. .. to borrow something you possess…. you would not expect them to use that thing to harm you in any way.”

    That’s how I read this.

And I wouldn’t be surprised if we forgot to put in such a clause either, I mean we never even got the basics right.

  19. The Boy Jinky on

    Canamalar

Please note I said if someone asked you a favour…. no where in that paragraph did I mention football or celtic …

  20. The Boy Jinky on

    Doc

Agreed. .. our players know bangura well enough from training.

If lennon has decided hes not good enough ( which most of us agree) then he should not hold very much threat against us.

In fact imho we should prefer him to get a shirt against us

  21. tbj,

Your just confusing me now, so what your saying is that was completely unrelated and a random comment then ?

  22. valentinesday on

    canamalar1

If Mo bang bang lines up against us….then

serious question’s hiv tae be asked.

  23. TBJ, agreed, Bangura is almost certainly a decent player, (even though he wasn’t at CP) but nothing to be afraid of.

A striker of a similar level we didn’t know would/could be more of a threat.

Does anyone know much about Elfsborg?

Love having football back. Home game on Tuesday, four sleeps!

  24. The Boy Jinky on

    Canamalar

I dont think your easy confused

Its analogy. .. if you did a favour you would not expect it to be used against you.

So in football terms… loaning a player … the team who owns the players contract would not expect him to be used against them.

    Get it now ;)
